What are O-rings and oil seals, and how do they differ?

An O-ring is a ring of elastomer with a round cross-section that seals by being squeezed in a groove, while an oil seal is a lip seal with a metal case that rides on a rotating shaft to keep lubricant in and contamination out. Both belong to the seals and gaskets family for the UAE, and they are the highest-volume items in most maintenance stores.

ISO 6194-1:2007 covers rotary shaft lip-type seals with elastomeric sealing elements, shows seal types with examples, and sets nominal dimensions and tolerances for seals, shafts and housings, with a dimensional identification code. Intertek's listing notes that these seals are considered suitable for low-pressure conditions, which is why a high pressure shaft needs a different seal.

Which O-ring material should you choose: NBR, FKM, EPDM or HNBR?

Choose the compound by the fluid and temperature, not by colour or price. NBR is the usual choice for mineral oils, FKM for higher heat and many chemicals, EPDM for water, steam and brake fluids, and HNBR for demanding oilfield service.

NBR and EPDM

Trelleborg explains that NBR is the most common elastomer for oils, with limited uptake of fluid hydrocarbons, and relatively resistant to aggressive chemicals, but more sensitive to ageing from environmental factors and abrasion. EPDM has strong ozone and UV resistance and good heat resistance, but absorbs oil and loses its properties. Mixing them up is a frequent field error: an EPDM O-ring fitted into an oil circuit swells and extrudes.

FKM and HNBR for oil and gas

CDI Energy Products' test report lists HNBR and FKM compounds qualified to ISO 23936-2 in sour multiphase fluid ageing tests and rapid gas decompression (RGD) testing, alongside NBR compounds for sweet service. HNBR and FKM grades differ in low temperature behaviour and RGD resistance, so ask which grade was tested rather than accepting a generic "Viton" label.

Hardness, size and standards

DIN ISO 3601-1 (ISO 3601-1:2012 with corrigendum and a 2019 amendment) covers O-ring inside diameters, cross-sections, tolerances and designation codes. Put the size code or ID by cross-section, the compound and the hardness on every order. AS568 dash sizes are also common in the UAE market: CDI's report uses AS568-222 and AS568-325 O-rings as its test specimens.

How do UAE heat, sunlight and storage affect O-rings and oil seals?

Elastomer seals age in storage as well as in service, and a UAE store can shorten shelf life if kits are left in hot containers or sunlight. Ozone and UV attack stressed rubber, and Trelleborg's comparison shows NBR is the weaker of the two on environmental ageing.

• Keep seals in sealed bags, in a cool, dark, shaded store; avoid cartons that sat in a container at a port in summer.
• Rotate stock first in, first out and mark the cure or batch date.
• Do not stretch O-rings over shafts or store them on hooks that deform them.
• Check shaft finish and fit a protective sleeve or double-lip seal where sand is present; scored shafts destroy new oil seals within hours.

Heat also pushes the choice from NBR to FKM or HNBR in engines, gearboxes and hot hydraulic circuits. Ask the supplier for the maximum continuous temperature of the exact compound.

Which standards and approvals apply to O-rings and oil seals in the UAE?

O-rings and oil seals in the UAE are bought to size and material standards named in the equipment or project specification; as of 2026 there is no dedicated UAE product certificate for the seal itself. The owner's approved vendor list and material test reports carry the weight on oil and gas work.

CDI's report describes the RGD test as saturating O-rings in a 90 percent methane and 10 percent carbon dioxide mixture at 100 degrees Celsius and 15 MPa, then running 8 decompression cycles over 7 days. Who supplies O-rings and oil seals in the UAE?

UAE buyers use general MRO traders for stock O-rings, kits and oil seals, specialist seal distributors for branded and special-compound items, and the original equipment maker for engine and gearbox specific seals. Branded supply matters most when the seal is in a pressure or sour gas path.

Price follows compound, size and certification, and lead time follows stock. Standard NBR O-rings and common metric oil seals are widely available from local stockists, while FKM, HNBR, FFKM, special sizes and tested compounds are imported or moulded to order.

• Compound: FKM and HNBR cost more than NBR, and perfluoroelastomers cost far more.
• Size and quantity: non-standard dash sizes and custom oil seals may need tooling.
• Testing and certificates: RGD, ageing tests and batch certificates add time and cost.
• Brand: OEM and branded seals cost more than commodity ones but give traceability.
