Gasket sheets and spiral wound gaskets in the UAE are the cut non-asbestos sheet and the metal-and-filler wound rings that seal bolted pipe flanges in refineries, gas plants, power stations and district cooling. This page explains how to choose the winding, filler and rings, which ASME and EN dimensions apply, and what a UAE buyer should ask a gasket supplier before ordering.

A spiral wound gasket is a ring made by winding a preformed metal strip and a soft filler together, then fitting it between two flanges so it behaves like a spring; a gasket sheet is flat jointing material that a fabricator cuts into rings or full-face shapes. Both sit under the seals and gaskets category for the UAE, and both depend on the flange they are clamped between, so start from the flange class and facing, not from the gasket.
In practice the split is by duty. Sheet cut gaskets suit water, chilled water, low pressure steam and air, usually on raised face or flat face flanges at Class 150. Spiral wound gaskets are the default for hydrocarbon, steam and process lines at higher class, where pressure and temperature cycles would crush a plain sheet. Garlock describes the metal strip as having a V-shaped crown centred in it that acts as a spring, which is what gives the gasket recovery when a flange moves with temperature.
| Type | Typical UAE use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed non-asbestos fibre sheet | Water, chilled water, fuel and low pressure steam at utilities and building services | Sheet grade, thickness, size or full-face drawing, asbestos-free declaration |
| Flexible graphite sheet, reinforced | Steam, hot oil and heat transfer fluid at higher temperature | Reinforcement (tanged metal or plain), thickness, oxidation inhibitor, chloride content |
| Spiral wound, winding only (SW) | Tongue and groove, male and female and groove-to-flat flanges where the gasket is confined | Winding metal, filler, thickness |
| Spiral wound with outer ring (RW) | Raised face flanges where the outer ring centres the gasket and limits compression | Outer ring metal, colour code, thickness |
| Spiral wound with inner and outer rings (RWI) | Process lines in gas plants, refineries and power stations, vacuum and cycling service | Inner ring metal (normally the winding metal), NPS and class, filler |
Pump casings and heat exchangers often carry their own gasket type, so check the equipment data sheet next to the line class. Seals that rotate rather than clamp are covered on the mechanical seals page.
Choose the winding metal for corrosion and temperature, the filler for temperature and chemistry, and the rings for pressure class and flange size. Then confirm the result against ASME B16.20 or the project specification, because the standard sets what is fitted by default.
Garlock notes that ASME B16.20 mandates inner rings on all PTFE filled spiral wound gaskets, on 24 inch NPS and larger gaskets in Class 900, on 12 inch and larger in Class 1500, and on 4 inch and larger in Class 2500. It adds that gaskets ordered to B16.20 are sold with inner rings unless the customer says otherwise at the time of order. The inner ring is normally the same metal as the winding. A common mistake on UAE shutdown orders is to write only "spiral wound gasket, 6 inch, 300#" and leave the ring configuration to the stockist.
Garlock lists the same m factor (3.00) and y factor (10,000 psi) for graphite and PTFE filled windings but a different bolt seating stress (Gb of 2,300 psi for graphite and 4,500 psi for PTFE). Graphite takes more heat; PTFE is chosen for aggressive chemicals and where graphite contamination or oxidation is unacceptable. Ask the supplier for the filler grade and its temperature limit, since the ASME B16.20 colour code only tells you the family.
Garlock shows a nominal 0.125 inch winding compressing to about 0.090 to 0.100 inch, and a 0.175 inch winding to about 0.125 to 0.135 inch. The outer ring acts as a compression limiter, so mixing a thicker winding with the wrong ring thickness leaves the gasket under-compressed or crushed.
Storage and handling matter more than ambient temperature for gaskets in the UAE. Sheet and graphite gaskets that sit in an open yard or a hot container for a summer pick up dust, moisture and edge damage that lead to leaks at start-up.
Most "gasket failures" on start-up trace back to flange finish, misalignment or uneven bolting rather than the gasket itself, which is why joint assembly records belong in the handover pack.
Gaskets in the UAE are bought to the dimensional and material standards in the line class or equipment specification; as of 2026 there is no gasket-specific UAE product certificate, so the owner's specification and approved vendor list set the gate. If a gasket ships inside a regulated assembly, check the ECAS and EQM conformity guide for the whole assembly.
| Requirement | Applies to | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B16.20-2023 | Metal ring-joint, spiral-wound and metal jacketed gaskets for ASME B16.5, B16.47 and API 6A flanges: materials, dimensions, tolerances, markings | ASME; checked at receipt against marking |
| ASME B16.21 | Nonmetallic flat gaskets for the same flange standards | ASME |
| EN 1514 series | Gaskets for PN flanges to EN 1092-1, common on European-designed water and power plant | CEN |
| ASME PCC-1 | Assembly of pressure-boundary bolted flange joints | ASME, called up by plant bolting procedures |
| Owner approved vendor list | Oil, gas and petrochemical projects | ADNOC group companies and their EPC contractors |
ASME lists B16.20 as being on stabilized maintenance, so the 2023 edition is the current text. For how flange classes and facings decide the gasket, read the pipe fittings and flanges standards guide. Write "asbestos-free" and the exact sheet material on every order; the UAE has banned asbestos products, and an explicit material declaration closes any doubt.
UAE buyers use three channels: gasket fabricators that cut sheet and wind spiral gaskets to order, authorised distributors of overseas manufacturers for certified material, and MRO stockists for common sizes. For critical lines, ask for batch traceability and a material certificate for the winding, filler and rings.
The right companion products are the flanges and fasteners the gasket runs between: flanges, threaded rods and studs and bolts and nuts. For rotating shafts see O-rings and oil seals, and for sliding rod seals on cylinders see hydraulic seals. For general sourcing advice read how to source industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Price follows the metal and filler, the diameter and the certification, and lead time follows whether the size is a stock ring or a wound-to-order job. Standard ASME sizes in 316 stainless and graphite are usually held by fabricators; exotic alloys, large diameters, non-standard sections and third-party inspected batches are made to order.
Send the flange standard, class, facing, size, line fluid, design temperature and the ring configuration with each enquiry. When you want several UAE quotes at once, post your requirement with those details.
