Nylon and engineering plastics in the UAE are the technical polymers (polyamide, acetal, PBT, polycarbonate and similar) bought as pellets by moulders and as rod, sheet and tube by workshops in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. This page explains how to choose a grade, how moisture changes parts, what to check and what moves price and lead time.
Because the emirate makes things that need boxes, films and containers: tea, food, ceramics, building products and consumer goods. RAKEZ reports that a corrugated cardboard maker started in Al Ghail in 2014, announced an AED 55 million expansion to triple output to 100,000 tons a year in a 375,000 square foot facility, and aimed to employ 300 people (the release gives a 2023 completion target). A single use food packaging producer also expanded in the zone. So plastics, rubber and packaging demand here is mostly from local manufacturers and exporters.
Factories sit in the RAKEZ industrial zones. Al Hamra Industrial Zone is aimed at light and high technology industry with ready warehouses from 150 to 10,000 square meters, and Al Ghail suits larger plants near the Etihad Rail terminal. Raw polymers and rubber compounds usually arrive by road from Dubai or Sharjah or through Saqr Port, so ask suppliers where stock sits.
The common purchases are corrugated boxes and cartons, stretch film and shrink wrap, pallets and crates and plastic raw materials. Plants also buy packaging machinery, rubber seals and gaskets and rubber hoses for maintenance. Export shippers need export wooden packaging that suits the destination rules.
For food contact packaging, ask for a declaration of conformity and confirm the material is suitable for halal food producers, including any release agents or inks. For boxes, specify board grade, burst strength and humidity resistance, because coastal moisture softens weak board. For films, test a roll on your wrapper before a full order. Rubber parts used near hot process equipment need a stated temperature range. Our packaging machinery guide helps with line decisions, and post a requirement compares offers.
Most of the emirate's factories sit inside the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, known as RAKEZ, which was formed in 2017 by merging the former RAK Free Trade Zone and the RAK Investment Authority. RAKEZ runs three industrial zones. Al Ghail is the heavy-manufacturing zone with the largest plots and a connection to the Etihad Rail freight facility. Al Hamra suits light and high-tech manufacturing and processing, and RAKEZ lists tenants there from tea blending to glass bottles and wiring harnesses. Al Hulaila is positioned for heavy industry beside Saqr Port, with land plots and warehouses on offer. RAKEZ lets investors choose a free zone or a non-free-zone licence in these zones, which matters if you plan to sell to the UAE mainland.
Saqr Port is the heart of the freight system. RAK Ports describes it as one of the largest bulk ports in the region, and trade reports put its handling at around 70 to 85 million tonnes a year, mostly limestone, aggregates, cement and clinker from local quarries, with a container terminal alongside. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport takes air freight. By road, the airport operator's published figures give roughly 60 km from Sharjah, about 110 km from Dubai city and about 250 km from Abu Dhabi city, so same-day delivery to Dubai is realistic while Abu Dhabi is a longer run. Etihad Rail's Al Ghail freight facility was announced in 2021 to move quarry material by train towards Abu Dhabi, and RAKEZ now describes Al Ghail as connected to the rail terminal.
The RAK Department of Economic Development licenses commercial and industrial activity on the mainland, while RAKEZ licenses companies inside its zones. RAKEZ tells manufacturers to obtain external clearances after licensing, naming environmental, Civil Defence and health authorities. RAK Municipality handles building permits outside the free zones, and a completion certificate from Civil Defence is needed for industrial and multi-storey buildings. For RAKEZ sites, RAKEZ itself pre-approves open yards with Civil Defence. Confirm which regime applies to your plot before ordering.
Quarrying, cement and construction materials are the emirate's historic base, and manufacturing is reported at more than a third of local GDP in a RAKEZ article. Food processing, pharmaceuticals, packaging, building products and automotive components follow. Large hospitality projects on Al Marjan Island, including the Wynn resort scheduled for spring 2027, add steady demand for fit-out and facilities supplies. Heavy oil and gas is not a local strength; for that, look to Abu Dhabi.
