What are float level switches and where do UAE plants use them?

A float level switch is a point level device in which a float rides on the liquid surface and, at a set position, operates a contact that starts a pump, sounds an alarm or trips a process. Endress+Hauser describes the principle as a float whose position is detected by an installed sensor to trigger the switching operation, and positions it as a simple, cost-effective solution for point level detection, used as a pump protector or level alarm and in open basins such as sewage treatment plants. Within level measurement in the UAE it is the standard choice for sumps, lift stations, cooling tower basins, rooftop water tanks, bunds and generator day tanks.

TypeTypical UAE useKey specification points
Cable float switchSump pumps, sewage wet wells, drainage pits, water tanksCable length and material, float shape, tilt angle, weight, IP68 rating
Side-mounted float switchVessels and tanks with a nozzle at the alarm heightThread or flange, float material and density, contact type, pressure rating
Top-mounted rod float switchTanks with one to four switch points on a single stemStem length, number of points, magnetic reed contacts, wetted materials
Hazardous-area float switchFuel, solvent and chemical tanksNAMUR or intrinsically safe circuit, zone rating, certificate
Mechanical lever float switchBoilers, cooling tower make-up and simple tanksValve or contact linkage, connection, hot water or steam rating

Endress+Hauser's Liquifloat FTS20, for example, offers a NAMUR switching signal for hazardous areas, noted to Zone 1, or an AC/DC change-over contact for standard applications. It does not give a continuous level reading, which is the first thing to settle when choosing between this type and the others.

What fluid and installation conditions limit a float switch?

A float switch only works if the float is lighter than the liquid, can move freely, and is not jammed by debris, grease or build-up. These are practical limits rather than data sheet footnotes, and they decide most failures.

  • Density. The float needs enough buoyancy at the lowest liquid density expected. Hot liquid, light oils and foam change the margin.
  • Debris and grease. Sewage, fat and rags tangle cable floats and coat stems. Choose a smooth float shape and a guided stem or cage where fouling is likely.
  • Turbulence. Splash from filling jets and agitators makes floats chatter, so mount away from inlets or use a stilling pipe.
  • Magnetic interference. Reed contacts need protection when switching inductive loads, so use a relay between the switch and a motor or valve.
  • Chemical compatibility. Float and cable materials must resist the liquid. Confirm stainless steel grade, polypropylene or PVDF in writing.

Float switch or continuous measurement?

If the operator needs the actual level on a screen, use a radar level transmitter, or ultrasonic level sensors for clean water. For sticky or viscous products, capacitance level probes do better. Floats remain preferred for independent high-high alarms, simple pump cut-out and low-cost duty in sumps. A hydrostatic pressure transmitter is a continuous alternative in water.

How should switch heights be set?

Set switch heights from the tank drawing so that the low level protects the pump suction, the start level leaves room for a full pump cycle, and the high alarm sits below the overflow with margin for the pumps to stop. Leave a separate high-high float for an independent alarm, wired to its own circuit, so that one failure cannot hide an overflow. Write the settings on the commissioning sheet and test each float by lifting it by hand or raising the water level at handover, and repeat the test on a schedule.

How do UAE heat, humidity and dust affect float level switches?

UAE conditions mostly affect the cable, housing and liquid, not the float principle. Water in rooftop tanks becomes hot in summer, so check the float and cable temperature rating and the buoyancy margin. Humidity and condensation inside the junction box corrupt reed contacts and terminals, so choose sealed housings with a stated ingress rating. In coastal Sharjah, Jebel Ali and Fujairah, stainless steel 316 or polymer floats resist salt better than plain carbon steel, and in sandy construction areas make sure sand does not settle around floats in sumps and jam the movement.

Which standards and approvals apply to float level switches in the UAE?

As of 2026, float switches in the UAE need ECAS-Ex certification when used in hazardous areas, suitable materials for potable water, and compliance with the project specification. Confirm each requirement with the authority and the owner.

RequirementApplies toAuthority
ECAS-Ex certificate of conformitySwitches in fuel, solvent and chemical tanks and other classified areasMoIAT, through notified bodies
Intrinsically safe or NAMUR circuitHazardous-area switches connected to a barrierCertificate and system documents
Potable water material approvalSwitches in drinking water tanksWater utility or project specification
Ingress protection ratingSubmersible and outdoor installationsProject specification, stated on data sheet
Independent overfill alarmPetroleum storage tanksTank owner, API Standard 2350 practice

Our ECAS and EQM guide shows how to check a certificate against the exact model. The storage tanks and terminals page describes where independent alarms fit at terminals.

Who supplies float level switches in the UAE?

Float switches are sold by manufacturers' regional offices, authorised distributors, electrical wholesalers and pump suppliers. Endress+Hauser makes the Liquifloat float switch. Before you compare prices, ask:

  • What are the float material, cable material and temperature rating?
  • Is the contact rating enough for the load, or is a relay needed?
  • Is it certified for a hazardous area, and can you show the ECAS-Ex file?
  • What cable length and tilt or stem settings are included?

Our sourcing guide for UAE and Saudi buyers covers authorisation checks, and you can post your requirement to collect quotes.

What affects the price and lead time of float level switches in the UAE?

Float materials, cable length, number of switch points, hazardous-area approval and the pressure rating set price. Standard cable floats for sumps and tanks are low-cost stock items at most distributors, while stainless multi-point rod switches and certified hazardous-area versions take longer. Imports clear through Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port. Buyers who run many pump stations save time by standardising one model and holding a few spares.

Frequently Asked Questions — Float Level Switches

What is a float level switch?
A float level switch is a point level device in which a buoyant float rises and falls with the liquid and operates a contact at a set height. It is used to start or stop pumps and to give high or low alarms. It does not provide a continuous reading.
Can float level switches be used in hazardous areas in the UAE?
Yes, if the switch is certified for the zone. Endress+Hauser lists a Liquifloat variant with a NAMUR signal for hazardous areas noted to Zone 1. As of 2026, UAE hazardous-area use requires ECAS-Ex certification, so ask for the certificate for the exact model.
When should I not use a float switch?
Avoid a float switch where the liquid is very dirty, greasy, foamy or of variable density, or where you need a continuous level. Debris jams floats and stems, and light liquids may not lift the float. Radar, ultrasonic or capacitance devices suit those cases.
What is the difference between a cable float switch and a rod float switch?
A cable float switch hangs from a cable and tilts to switch, suiting sumps and wet wells. A rod float switch has floats guided on a fixed stem, with one or more points, and suits tanks. The rod type is better where accurate fixed switching heights matter.
Which materials suit float switches in coastal UAE sites?
Stainless steel 316 and chemically resistant polymers such as polypropylene or PVDF resist salt air and many liquids better than carbon steel. Confirm compatibility with the actual liquid and temperature in writing, and choose sealed housings with a stated ingress rating.
Should I buy float level switches from the manufacturer, an authorised distributor or a stockist?
A stockist is fine for standard cable floats in water and drainage duty. Use the manufacturer or an authorised distributor for hazardous-area, chemical or fuel tank switches, where certificates, material data and warranty matter. Ask for written authorisation.
What affects the price and lead time of float level switches in the UAE?
Float and cable materials, number of switch points, hazardous-area certification, cable length and pressure rating drive price and delivery. Standard cable floats are usually in local stock, while certified or multi-point stainless switches are ordered from the maker.
