UAE buyers order carbon steel bar as merchant bar (rounds, flats, squares, angles and channels), wire rod in coil, machining bar and reinforcing bar, and each has a different mill and a different rulebook. Bars and rods form one of four product forms in the carbon steel category for the UAE.

Nucor, whose merchant bar range is published, lists channels, angles, rounds, flats and squares in its merchant bar quality product, made to ASTM A36/A36M-19 from electric arc furnace steel. Jazeera Steel's merchant bar mill lists channels, angles, flats, squares, rounds, deformed bar and I beams. A fabricator in Sharjah or Ajman looking for a standard angle or flat will find these shapes in stock; a machining round in a specific engineering grade is a different order.

State the shape, size, length, grade, condition and surface on the order. A request for "MS round bar 40 mm" can mean hot rolled black bar, peeled bar, or cold-finished bright bar, and each has a different diameter tolerance and straightness. Hot rolled is the cheapest and carries mill scale; cold drawn or turned bars hold tighter diameter and surface, which saves a machining pass.
The grade matters as much as the shape. EN 10025-2 gives technical delivery conditions for hot-rolled non-alloy structural steels and covers flat and long products, which includes bar sections, though it excludes hollow sections and tubes. Where strength is critical, say so; where a part will be heat treated, carburised or hardened, name an engineering grade rather than a structural one, and ask for a mill test certificate showing carbon content. If a fastener or highly stressed part is involved, ask whether alloy steel is the better choice, since plain carbon bar hardens only to a limited depth.
Plan for straightness and cut length. Bars come in mill lengths, commonly 6 m or 12 m, and many UAE stockists saw to length for a small fee. Ask for the heat number on each cut piece. The rest of the carbon steel range is in carbon steel plates, carbon steel pipes and carbon steel sheets and coils.
As of 2026, reinforcing bar is the clearly regulated bar product in the UAE, and other bar is bought against the project specification and mill certificate. A January 2026 legal guide to importing construction materials says products without valid ECAS certification cannot be marketed, sold or used in UAE construction projects for rebar, and refers to Cabinet Resolution No. 121/2023 for QR codes and rolling marks. It describes rebar rules rather than merchant bar rules, so ask MoIAT whether a given merchant or machining bar needs ECAS.

Most disputes on bar come from three mistakes: an unstated grade, an unstated condition and a missing certificate. A yard that quotes "MS bar" will usually supply the cheapest grade that meets a loose description, and a machinist who finds the bar will not harden, or the diameter varies by more than the fit allows, has no claim if the order never said otherwise. Write the grade, the condition (hot rolled, peeled or cold drawn) and the tolerance into the purchase order, and ask for the mill test certificate with the delivery, not after.
Coastal storage is the fourth cause. Bright and peeled bars rust quickly in humid Gulf air if left in open racks, so ask for oiled or wrapped bar and store it under cover. Galvanised rod needs the zinc layer protected during cutting and threading. If a bar will be welded, remember that higher carbon content makes welds harder and more crack-prone, and the welding procedure should be written for the actual grade supplied, not for a nominal one.
