Crude oil storage tanks in Saudi Arabia are the large welded steel tanks that hold crude at Aramco fields, export terminals such as Ras Tanura and refineries from Jubail to Yanbu. Most are floating roof tanks designed to API 650 and bought through Aramco or EPC channels with iktva scoring. This page covers types, desert conditions, standards, suppliers and cost drivers.
Jeddah is a fuel distribution and trading city rather than a producing one. The oil, gas and petrochemicals activity visible in the city is mostly downstream. Al Jazeera reported in November 2020 that the Aramco North Jeddah bulk plant, southeast of King Abdulaziz International Airport, has 13 tanks and distributes more than 120,000 barrels of products a day. Drilling, wellheads and production equipment belong to the Eastern Province, so Jeddah buyers here are fuel terminals, industrial plants, airports and traders rather than operators of oil fields.
Storage and handling lead. Storage tanks and terminals, tank farm equipment and loading and unloading arms serve bulk plants and port installations. Aviation fuel equipment is a local niche because Jeddah is a major airport for pilgrim and commercial traffic. Factories use petroleum products, bitumen and asphalt for roads and polyethylene and polypropylene as raw material for plastics converters. Pipeline valves and metering and custody transfer systems follow wherever product moves between tanks.
Large refining and petrochemical complexes serving the west are on the Red Sea coast outside Jeddah, and the Kingdom's biggest concentrations are in Jubail and the Eastern Province. If you need heavy equipment for those, shortlist suppliers with project references there and treat Jeddah as the delivery and trading base.
Tank and fuel installations face Civil Defense review for fire protection, spacing and foam or water systems, and environmental conditions come through the relevant national authority. Request material test certificates and coating specifications for tanks near the coast, since salt accelerates corrosion. Ask whether a vendor can supply spare seals and gaskets from stock in Jeddah, and use post a requirement to compare quotes.
Jeddah is the commercial centre of the western Kingdom, and its factories sit in three industrial cities south of the built-up area, all supervised by the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as MODON. Saudipedia dates the First Industrial City to 1971, with about twelve million square metres and 1,119 factories, east of Al-Rahmaniyah Market. The Second opened in 2009 west of the Coastal Road, about 30 km from the first. The Third, east of the Coastal Road, is listed with 714 factories and a much larger 80 million square metre footprint, of which 24 million is developed. In August 2024 Argaam reported more than SAR 521 million of new MODON projects there, among them a first-phase wastewater plant of 10,000 cubic metres a day in the Second City and 24 ready-made factories of 350 square metres each in the First.
Jeddah Islamic Port is the main gateway. Wikipedia describes 62 berths in service in 2023 and a share of roughly 65 percent of the Kingdom's seaborne imports, and the port is the western end of the planned Saudi Landbridge. In March 2025 DP World and Mawani inaugurated the expanded South Container Terminal, which lifts capacity from 1.8 to 4 million TEU, and a SAR 900 million, 415,000 square metre logistics park is being built beside it. The airport lies to the north, and trucks carry cargo inland to Mecca, Medina, Taif and Riyadh.
MODON leases plots and ready units. Mawani regulates the port. ZATCA runs customs, and opened an all-in-one customs hall at the port in January 2022. Jeddah Municipality issues trade and building permits, the General Directorate of Civil Defense approves fire and life safety, and the National Water Company runs water and sewage. Confirm current steps on each authority's own platform before contracting.
Construction and fit-out lead because of waterfront and city redevelopment. Food, plastics, packaging, paint and metal plants in the industrial cities buy machinery and spares, while port and logistics operators buy handling gear. Fuel is distributed from Aramco's North Jeddah bulk plant, but refining and heavy petrochemicals sit in other cities.
