The oil, gas and petrochemicals sector in Saudi Arabia is the supply chain for Aramco's oil and gas fields, pipelines, refineries and the petrochemical plants of Jubail, Yanbu and the Eastern Province. This page explains the five families we list, where Saudi buying is concentrated, which approvals apply (Aramco registration, iktva, SASO and SABER, API) and how to pick between a manufacturer, distributor or stockist.

In Saudi Arabia the sector spans everything Aramco and the petrochemical producers buy to find, produce, move, refine and convert hydrocarbons, from drilling rigs in the Empty Quarter to polymer plants on the Gulf and Red Sea coasts. ListGCC sorts it into five families, each with its own hub of suppliers and buying notes.
Technical rules in this sector come mostly from the buyer. Aramco and the EPC contractors working for it set specifications, approve vendors and inspect, while the state shapes the market through SASO import conformity and through localisation, which Aramco drives with its iktva programme. Suppliers that understand both layers win more work.
Upstream oil and gas equipment for Saudi fields covers exploration, drilling, wellheads and production. Leaves include drilling rigs, bits, mud and directional drilling and wellheads, Christmas trees and blowout preventers. Demand is shaped by Aramco's gas programme: it calls Jafurah the largest non-associated gas field in the Kingdom and awarded $10 billion of contracts for its development in 2021.
Midstream oil and gas in Saudi Arabia links fields to plants, refineries and export terminals. It includes pipeline equipment such as line pipe, coatings, pigs and cathodic protection, gas compressors, booster pumps and metering stations and storage tanks and terminals. Long desert pipelines make coatings and cathodic protection a big part of the spend.
Downstream oil and gas in Saudi Arabia is refining and its products. ListGCC lists refinery equipment including distillation columns, reactors and desalters and petroleum products such as base oils, bitumen and petroleum coke. Refineries on the Gulf coast and at Yanbu on the Red Sea are the main buyers.
Oilfield services for Saudi wells include stimulation and fracturing, well testing, cementing, wireline, workover, well intervention, oilfield chemicals and rental equipment. Unconventional gas has raised the importance of fracturing and long-lateral services, and service contracts are usually long-term call-offs with Aramco.
Petrochemicals in Saudi Arabia covers feedstocks, intermediates and polymers and the plant equipment behind them. Leaves include methanol and MTBE, fertiliser plant equipment, polyethylene and polypropylene, aromatics and ethylene plants. Aramco said in 2020 that Jafurah gas will provide feedstock for the petrochemical industries, tying this family to upstream growth.
Saudi oil and gas suppliers cluster in the Eastern Province around Dhahran, Al Khobar, Dammam and Jubail, close to Aramco and the main fields, with a second cluster at Yanbu on the Red Sea and head offices in Riyadh. The locations that matter to a buyer are below.
Many suppliers cover the Kingdom from an Eastern Province base and the rest of the GCC from Dubai, so ask which legal entity will invoice and hold the Aramco registration.
Distance matters inside the Kingdom too. A stockist in Dammam can usually reach Jubail and the Eastern Province fields the same day, while Yanbu and western sites are a long road haul away or served from Jeddah. When two offers look equal, ask where the goods are physically held and how they will reach your site, and confirm that the delivery terms cover the final leg rather than stopping at a port or warehouse.
Saudi oil, gas and petrochemical purchases sit under three layers: Aramco's supplier registration and qualification with iktva localisation, SASO conformity for imported products through SABER, and the API, ISO and NACE standards written into each specification. The table reflects what we checked in October 2026.
| Requirement | What it covers | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Aramco supplier registration and qualification | Registration on the e-Marketplace platform, with the Dhahran office handling in-Kingdom companies | Aramco |
| iktva | In-Kingdom Total Value Add: localisation and supplier development in Aramco's supply chain | Aramco |
| SABER product certificate of conformity and shipment certificate | Imported products covered by SASO technical regulations, and each consignment | SASO |
| API Spec Q1, Q2 and Monogram | Manufacturer and service company quality systems; licensed marking of new product | API |
| API Spec 4F, 7K, 8C, 13A, 16A | Rig structures, drilling and hoisting equipment, drilling fluids, BOPs | API, via the purchase order |
| API Spec 6A, 5CT | Wellheads and trees; casing and tubing | API |
| API Spec 5L, 6D | Line pipe; pipeline and piping valves | API |
| API Spec 12B, 12D, 12F | Bolted, field welded and shop welded tanks for production liquids | API |
| NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 | Materials for H2S service | ISO and AMPP, via the Aramco specification |
| IADC WellSharp | Well control training for drilling and well servicing crews | IADC |
Aramco says any company interested in doing business with it must register through its e-Marketplace platform, and that registering and qualifying does not guarantee future business. Suppliers outside the region register through the Aramco affiliate for their location. iktva aims to increase the use of in-Kingdom suppliers, expand local supply chain capacity and promote the Kingdom as an export hub; Aramco reports reaching 70% local content in early 2026 and now targets 75% by 2030.
SABER is SASO's electronic platform for registering products and certificates of conformity and issuing shipment certificates. It warns that shipments without the required certificates may be re-exported, and it issues a separate shipment conformity certificate for products not intended for consumers. Our SASO and SABER certificate guide for industrial equipment explains which certificate applies when.
Saudi sour gas can be severe: a 2012 AAPG abstract reports up to 35% H2S in the Kidan structures in the Empty Quarter. ISO 15156-1:2015 was withdrawn in November 2020 and replaced by a 2020 edition, so name the edition in every enquiry. For electrical equipment in hazardous areas, SASO has worked with the IECEx system and buyers commonly ask for IECEx certificates; confirm the current SASO requirement with SASO or a conformity body.
Pick the supply channel by item type, then check Aramco registration, in-Kingdom content and import documents before comparing price. Engineered and pressure-containing equipment should come from the manufacturer or an authorised distributor; commodities can come from stockists with full traceability.
| Channel | Typical items in Saudi Arabia | Checks before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer, including in-Kingdom plants | Rigs, wellheads, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, large valves | Aramco registration for the material group, API licence and Q1 certificate, in-Kingdom content, inspection and test plan |
| Authorised distributor or agent | Instruments, standard valves, rotating equipment spares | Brand authorisation letter, warranty, service workshop in the Kingdom |
| Stockist | Pipe, fittings, flanges, fasteners, gaskets, drilling consumables | Mill certificates traceable to heat number, SABER documents for imported stock, stock age |
| Service company | Drilling, fracturing, cementing, wireline, well testing | API Q2 or equivalent quality system, crew well control certification, equipment certification, Saudi staffing |
Ask for a compliance statement and deviation list against the Aramco specification, and a clear statement of which parts are made, assembled or serviced in Saudi Arabia. Our guide to vetting industrial suppliers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE covers commercial registration and reference checks. To get offers, post your requirement to Saudi suppliers.
For Saudi buyers, price and lead time follow the build route (stock or made to order), the rating and materials, the Aramco inspection and document cycle, import clearance through SABER, and the distance to site. ListGCC does not publish prices, which move with steel and alloy costs, activity levels and the scope of each order.
When comparing offers, ask for a dated schedule from drawing approval to delivery, the country of manufacture of each major item, the in-Kingdom content claimed, and confirmation of which items are physically in Saudi stock. A short schedule built on an unapproved drawing or an uncleared shipment is not a short schedule.
For petrochemical plant equipment the same logic holds, with one addition: shutdown and turnaround windows at Jubail and Yanbu plants are fixed long in advance, so late equipment can mean waiting for the next window. Build float into those orders and expedite the critical items early.
Brands in this sector range from drilling and oilfield service companies to compressor, pump and valve manufacturers. Each link opens the Saudi suppliers listed for that brand.
