Aramco and SABIC specifications are largely written around ASTM and API, while some consultants on buildings and infrastructure use European grades. ASTM A36 covers structural-quality carbon steel shapes, plates and bars; ASTM A572 covers high-strength low-alloy shapes, plates, sheet piling and bars in five grades from 42 to 65, where Grades 60 and 65 are aimed at bolted or riveted bridge work or other construction. EN 10025-2 covers hot rolled non-alloy structural steels in flat and long form. Treat each as its own system and do not accept substitutes without written approval from the engineer of record.
EN 10210 hot finished sections and EN 10219 cold formed welded sections can reach similar mechanical properties, but their square and rectangular section properties differ, because cold formed corners have a different radius. A cheaper EN 10219 tube cannot simply replace an EN 10210 one on a design, so ask the structural engineer before accepting an alternative.
Saudi steel faces two climates: salty, humid air on the Gulf and Red Sea coasts, where corrosion is fast, and a hot, dry, dusty interior, where corrosion is slower but abrasion and thermal movement matter more. Choose protection for the actual site.
For industrial steel in Saudi Arabia, the buyer's specification and approved source lists carry most of the weight, backed by mill certificates and inspection. SASO technical regulations and SABER certificates apply to products in their scope, notably construction steel, and government projects add local content rules, as of October 2026.

Aramco approves sources by 9COM commodity at the manufacturing plant level, and its supplier FAQs say new sources are approved only for items on its Material Sourcing List. For government work, the LCGPA Mandatory List and a 10% evaluation preference for national products can change which offer wins. On every order, check that the heat number on the steel matches an EN 10204 certificate of the type the specification asks for. A 3.1 is validated by the mill's independent inspection representative; a 3.2 also needs the buyer's or a third-party inspector at the mill, so it cannot be added once the steel is in a stockist's yard.
Saudi mills, led by Hadeed in Jubail, supply rebar, wire rod, sections and hot and cold rolled coil, and Saudi pipe mills produce line and structural pipe. Alloy, stainless, heavy plate and specialist pipe come from foreign mills through Saudi agents and stockists in Dammam, Jubail, Riyadh and Jeddah, many of which offer cutting and processing. Pipe orders usually come with fittings and flanges from the same piping class, and plate and sections often go to fabrication shops and then to blasting, coating or galvanizing. For lighter or more corrosion-resistant options, look at aluminium, copper and other non-ferrous metals.
Saudi steel prices track world markets for scrap, iron ore, coil and alloys, so validity is short. Grade, thickness, testing and certification add cost, as do approved-source limits that rule out cheaper stock. Domestic products such as coil and rebar can be quicker than imports, while alloy pipe, duplex and heavy plate depend on a foreign mill's schedule and shipping to Dammam or Jeddah, plus trucking inland. Confirm customs duty for the HS code and origin before you compare. When you are ready for quotes, post your requirement with grades, sizes, quantities, certificates and delivery city.
