Water softeners in the UAE are ion exchange units that remove calcium and magnesium so scale does not form in pipes, heaters, boilers and machines. This page covers residential, duplex and industrial types, why UAE water scales, how to size from a water analysis, the Abu Dhabi hardness limits and fitting rules, and what drives price and lead time.
A new sewage plant and a busy industrial base. The Government of Ras Al Khaimah, through its Public Services Department, signed the emirate's first public private partnership for sewage treatment with a consortium of Etihad Water and Electricity, TAQA Water Solutions and Saur International. The plant is designed for 60,000 cubic meters a day and a potential population of 300,000, with a 6.3 km gravity pipeline and up to 26 km of recycled water network for irrigation and cooling. A January 2026 trade report covered the award. That shapes water and environmental services in the emirate for years.
Utilities and developers buy sewage treatment plants, water pumping stations and wastewater treatment. Factories in Al Ghail, Al Hamra and Al Hulaila buy industrial effluent treatment and reverse osmosis systems. Drinking water in the emirate comes largely from seawater desalination, so desalination plants and related parts are a steady need.
Quarries and crushers make dust. A 2018 report quoted residents near Khor Khwair complaining about air quality and authorities reporting a 16 percent drop in suspended particles, so industrial dust collection systems and air pollution control equipment are practical purchases. On the recycling side, a stainless and non-ferrous scrap facility opened in Al Ghail, and a planned battery recycling centre was reported in 2022, so scrap metal recycling is a local strength. Hazardous waste needs licensed handlers, so confirm permits with the Ras Al Khaimah Environment Protection and Development Authority.
For treatment plants, ask for the design basis, effluent targets and who holds the operating licence. For small package plants, check footprint, noise and sludge handling. For membranes and pumps, ask for spare parts stock in the UAE and a service contract. Use post a requirement to compare quotes on one specification.
Most of the emirate's factories sit inside the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, known as RAKEZ, which was formed in 2017 by merging the former RAK Free Trade Zone and the RAK Investment Authority. RAKEZ runs three industrial zones. Al Ghail is the heavy-manufacturing zone with the largest plots and a connection to the Etihad Rail freight facility. Al Hamra suits light and high-tech manufacturing and processing, and RAKEZ lists tenants there from tea blending to glass bottles and wiring harnesses. Al Hulaila is positioned for heavy industry beside Saqr Port, with land plots and warehouses on offer. RAKEZ lets investors choose a free zone or a non-free-zone licence in these zones, which matters if you plan to sell to the UAE mainland.
Saqr Port is the heart of the freight system. RAK Ports describes it as one of the largest bulk ports in the region, and trade reports put its handling at around 70 to 85 million tonnes a year, mostly limestone, aggregates, cement and clinker from local quarries, with a container terminal alongside. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport takes air freight. By road, the airport operator's published figures give roughly 60 km from Sharjah, about 110 km from Dubai city and about 250 km from Abu Dhabi city, so same-day delivery to Dubai is realistic while Abu Dhabi is a longer run. Etihad Rail's Al Ghail freight facility was announced in 2021 to move quarry material by train towards Abu Dhabi, and RAKEZ now describes Al Ghail as connected to the rail terminal.
The RAK Department of Economic Development licenses commercial and industrial activity on the mainland, while RAKEZ licenses companies inside its zones. RAKEZ tells manufacturers to obtain external clearances after licensing, naming environmental, Civil Defence and health authorities. RAK Municipality handles building permits outside the free zones, and a completion certificate from Civil Defence is needed for industrial and multi-storey buildings. For RAKEZ sites, RAKEZ itself pre-approves open yards with Civil Defence. Confirm which regime applies to your plot before ordering.
Quarrying, cement and construction materials are the emirate's historic base, and manufacturing is reported at more than a third of local GDP in a RAKEZ article. Food processing, pharmaceuticals, packaging, building products and automotive components follow. Large hospitality projects on Al Marjan Island, including the Wynn resort scheduled for spring 2027, add steady demand for fit-out and facilities supplies. Heavy oil and gas is not a local strength; for that, look to Abu Dhabi.
