Slings and shackles in the UAE are the rigging gear that connects a load to a crane or hoist hook: chain, wire rope and synthetic slings, and bow and dee shackles. This page explains the types, how working load limits and certificates work, what UAE sun and coastal air do to them, and how to compare suppliers.
In the logistics and material handling sector, Abu Dhabi is where much of the UAE's container, bulk and project cargo is handled, and where the buyers of the equipment behind that cargo are found. AD Ports Group says it owns and operates 10 ports and terminals in the UAE, and Khalifa Port is the largest of them. Its CMA Terminals berth opened in December 2024 and, according to AD Ports in November 2025, reached full capacity after ten months. An expansion from 1.8 to 2.7 million TEU was announced for completion in early 2028. This is the demand that drives purchases of material handling equipment, forklifts and lifting equipment around the port.
Three clusters matter. KEZAD sits beside Khalifa Port and markets logistics, metals, polymers and food processing sites, so warehouse operators there buy pallet racking, dock gear and conveyors. Mussafah and ICAD, about 30 km from the city centre according to Cushman and Wakefield, hold older yards, trucking firms and equipment dealers that serve contractors. The island and the city side hold freight forwarders, customs agents and offices rather than heavy plant. Mussafah Port and Zayed Port are also AD Ports commercial ports, so general cargo and breakbulk are handled close to the dealers.
AD Ports lists container, general cargo, RoRo, breakbulk, liquid, dry bulk and warehousing services, and its logistics arm Noatum launched a rail shuttle between Khalifa Port and Fujairah Terminals in 2025. The CMA terminal is described as connected to the Etihad Rail network. For oversized loads, ask a heavy haulage or project cargo provider about route permits, escorts and bridge limits before you fix a delivery date. Clearance questions go through customs clearance services.
Lifting gear needs test certificates and, for cranes, a competent inspection record; read the overhead crane buying guide before writing a specification. Racking and mezzanines must be approved for fire and life safety, so confirm the current rule with Abu Dhabi Civil Defence and the building authority. A warehouse licence comes from the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development on the mainland, or from KEZAD in its zones. If you are comparing rented against bought equipment, ask whether the dealer holds local service technicians and spare parts. Send one specification through post a requirement to compare quotes on the same terms.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
