Power Distribution Suppliers, UAE
Power distribution equipment in the UAE is what carries electricity from the utility network to the building or plant: packaged substations and ring main units, busduct, energy meters and monitoring, power factor correction and voltage regulators. This page lists UAE suppliers and explains how DEWA and the other utilities shape a specification, the IEC standards that apply, the effect of Gulf heat, and what drives price and lead time.

What is power distribution equipment and which types do UAE projects buy?
Power distribution equipment takes medium-voltage supply from the utility, transforms it, carries it through a site and measures and conditions it on the way to the loads. In the UAE it is a family within the energy and renewables category for the UAE, and it overlaps with building electrical work at the point where the utility network ends and the customer installation begins.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Substations, packaged and unit substations | 11 kV distribution substations for villas, towers, malls, labour accommodation and factories | MV switching (usually an RMU), transformer kVA, LV board, enclosure class for temperature rise, internal arc rating, utility drawing approval |
| Busduct and busbar trunking | Risers in high-rise towers, transformer to main switchboard links, data halls | Rated current at the real ambient, aluminium or copper, IP rating, fire barriers at slab crossings, tap-off units |
| Energy meters and power monitoring | Utility revenue meters, tenant sub-metering, power quality monitoring in plants and data centres | Accuracy class, CT or direct connection, communications protocol, utility approval for billing meters |
| Power factor correction capacitor banks | Commercial buildings and factories with motor and HVAC load | kvar steps, detuned reactors for harmonics, controller, capacitor temperature category |
| Automatic voltage regulators and stabilisers | Construction sites, remote plants and sensitive equipment fed from weak supplies | kVA, input voltage window, correction speed, servo or static type, bypass |
Many items on a distribution package are bought from neighbouring categories: medium voltage switchgear and LV boards from switchgear and panel suppliers, distribution transformers, and MV and LV power cables. Solar plants and battery storage systems also connect through this equipment, and on-site generation from power generation sets ties into the same LV boards.
How are UAE distribution networks organised?
Each emirate's utility owns and specifies the public distribution network, so the utility decides which equipment can be connected to it. DEWA serves Dubai, TAQA Distribution serves Abu Dhabi, SEWA serves Sharjah and Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) serves the northern emirates.
Dubai shows the scale. DEWA commissioned 1,994 new 11 kV substations in 2025, up from 1,530 in 2024, bringing its medium-voltage (11 kV and 6.6 kV) distribution substations to 47,060 at the end of 2025, according to the Dubai Media Office. DEWA also replaced its electricity and water meters with more than two million smart meters between 2015 and 2020 under its Smart Grid Strategy 2014 to 2035, Khaleej Times reported.
In practice, a developer building a substation that the utility will adopt must use equipment and layouts the utility accepts, and submit drawings for approval. Behind the customer's main breaker the consultant's specification takes over. Ask early which side of that boundary each item sits on, because utility-side equipment usually needs a model the utility has already accepted.
How do UAE heat, dust and humidity affect distribution equipment?
Heat inside enclosures is the biggest problem. A packaged substation, feeder pillar or capacitor panel standing in summer sun runs well above the air temperature, and ratings quoted at standard ambient fall away.
Packaged substations in sun
IEC 62271-202 assigns prefabricated substations an enclosure class that describes how much hotter the transformer runs inside the enclosure than in open air. Ask for the class the design was type-tested to, the ventilation arrangement, and the transformer derating that results, and specify a light-coloured or shaded enclosure where the utility allows it.
Busduct and capacitor banks
Busduct is rated at a reference ambient; risers in towers with warm shafts need the manufacturer's derating. Power factor correction capacitors carry a temperature category under IEC 60831-1, and a capacitor panel in a hot LV room can exceed it. Ventilate or cool the panel, and use detuned reactors where variable speed drives, LED lighting and IT loads create harmonics.
Dust, humidity and salt
Fine dust blocks louvres and filters, and coastal humidity condenses inside enclosures at night. Specify the IP rating, anti-condensation heaters, filter access for maintenance, and coatings suited to coastal sites in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah.
Which standards and approvals apply to power distribution equipment in the UAE?
As of 2026 UAE distribution equipment is specified to IEC standards, accepted by the relevant utility where it connects to the public network, and certified under MoIAT schemes where a product is regulated. The table lists the documents met most often.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 62271-200 | Metal-enclosed MV switchgear and ring main units above 1 kV up to 52 kV, including internal arc classification | Utility and consultant specifications |
| IEC 62271-202:2022 | Prefabricated substations above 1 kV up to 52 kV: service conditions, enclosure, type tests | Utility and consultant specifications |
| IEC 61439-6 | Low-voltage busbar trunking systems up to 1,000 V AC | Consultants, panel and busduct makers |
| IEC 60831-1 | Self-healing shunt capacitors for power factor correction up to 1,000 V | Consultants and panel builders |
| IEC 62053-21 and 62053-22 | Accuracy classes of static energy meters, direct and transformer-operated | Utilities and sub-metering specifications |
| Utility acceptance | Network equipment, intake metering, substation drawings | DEWA, TAQA Distribution, SEWA, EtihadWE |
| ECAS or EQM certificate | Regulated low-voltage electrical products | MoIAT through notified bodies |
The ECAS and EQM conformity guide explains MoIAT certificates for low-voltage products. Protection devices inside these assemblies are covered on the circuit protection page.
Who supplies power distribution equipment in the UAE?
The UAE has local manufacturers of transformers, packaged substations and RMUs, international switchgear brands with regional assembly, and many panel builders and distributors that assemble or stock meters, capacitors and busduct.
- Lucy Electric makes ring main units, packaged substations, feeder pillars and grid automation units, and has manufacturing in Dubai.
- Emirates Transformer and Switchgear and Federal Transformers are UAE manufacturers of distribution transformers and packaged or unit substations.
- Ormazabal and Efacec supply gas-insulated RMUs, MV switchgear and compact substations.
- ABB and Siemens supply MV and LV switchgear, distribution transformers and distribution boards for buildings and industry.
- Socomec makes power and energy monitoring, transfer switching and metering products.
Ask a bidder for the utility acceptance letter or approved-make reference for the exact model, type test reports from an accredited laboratory, and the UAE service arrangement. Our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers checking distributor authorisation.
What drives the price and lead time of power distribution equipment in the UAE?
Transformer and switchgear slots, copper and aluminium prices, and utility approvals drive most of the cost and schedule; meters, capacitors and stabilisers are often available from stock.
- Utility-adopted equipment: substations and RMUs built to a utility specification are made to order, and drawing approval adds time.
- Conductor metal: busduct and transformer prices move with copper and aluminium; ask whether a quote is fixed or indexed.
- Testing: factory acceptance tests and third-party witnessing add cost and must be booked into the programme.
- Local manufacture: UAE-made transformers and packaged substations avoid sea freight to Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port and can shorten delivery.
Send each bidder the single-line diagram, utility, site ambient and enclosure requirements. To collect quotes, post your requirement to UAE power distribution suppliers.
