Energy meters and monitoring equipment in the UAE covers the sub-meters, multifunction panel meters, power quality analysers and software that building owners, factories and data centres use behind the utility meter. This page lists UAE suppliers and explains the meter types, which IEC accuracy class to ask for, how meters connect to BMS and energy software, what UAE heat does to them, and what drives price and lead time.

Energy meters record how much electricity a circuit uses; monitoring systems add power, voltage, harmonics and alarms, and collect the data in software. They belong to power distribution equipment in the UAE. The billing meter at the intake is owned by DEWA, TAQA Distribution, SEWA or EtihadWE, so private buyers mostly purchase the meters downstream of it.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-connected kWh sub-meter | Tenant and apartment sub-metering, small shops, EV chargers | Current rating, IEC 62053-21 class, DIN-rail width, pulse or Modbus output |
| CT-operated energy meter | Main incomers and large feeders in malls, hotels and factories | IEC 62053-22 class (0.5S or 0.2S), CT ratio, CT class to match |
| Multifunction power meter (PMD) | Switchboard feeders, motor control centres, chiller plant | IEC 61557-12 performance class, measured values, harmonics, communications |
| Power quality analyser | Data centres, hospitals, plants with drives and sensitive loads | Event capture, harmonics, flicker, IEC 62586 compliance |
| Monitoring software and gateways | Portfolio energy management, tenant billing, ESG reporting | Protocols (Modbus TCP, BACnet), data storage, reports, user access |
Meters on CT circuits need matching current transformers, and the data usually goes to building management systems in the UAE. Many busduct systems also offer tap-off units with built-in meters for floor-by-floor metering in towers.
Ask for the class defined by the standard the meter is tested to, because "1%" on a brochure is not a class. Revenue-style kWh meters are classed under IEC 62053, and multifunction monitoring devices under IEC 61557-12.
The CT matters as much as the meter. A 0.5S meter on a protection-class CT will not give 0.5S results, so specify metering-class CTs with the meter.
In UAE buildings, monitoring mainly serves tenant recharging, chiller plant efficiency and green building reporting; in plants, it finds wasted energy and power quality problems before they trip equipment.
Plan communications early: Modbus RTU over RS-485 is common inside panels, with Modbus TCP or BACnet to the BMS or energy software. Ask for the register map and confirm the BMS integrator can read it.
Meters are electronic devices with a stated operating temperature range, and switchboards in UAE plant rooms without cooling can exceed it in summer. Displays fade, batteries for clocks and memory age faster, and readings drift outside class.
As of 2026, UAE meter specifications cite IEC classes, utilities control any meter used for their own billing, and MoIAT's conformity schemes cover legal measuring instruments and low-voltage products. Confirm the scheme for each product with a MoIAT notified body.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or user |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 62053-21 and IEC 62053-22 | Accuracy classes of static kWh meters, direct and transformer-operated | Consultants, landlords, utilities |
| IEC 62052-11 | General requirements and tests for electricity metering equipment | Manufacturers and test labs |
| IEC 61557-12 | Power metering and monitoring devices (PMDs) | Consultants and panel builders |
| Utility approval | Intake and billing meters, smart meter interfaces | DEWA, TAQA Distribution, SEWA, EtihadWE |
| ECAS or EQM certificate | Regulated product groups, including legal measuring instruments and low-voltage equipment | MoIAT through notified bodies |
The ECAS and EQM guide explains which MoIAT certificates exist and how to check one.
Most UAE meters come from international switchgear and metering brands through their UAE offices and electrical distributors, with panel builders fitting them into switchboards.
Ask for the class certificate or test report for the exact model, the register map, the operating temperature, and local support for software licences. The supplier sourcing guide covers checking distributors.
Accuracy class, measured functions, communications and software drive price; common DIN-rail and panel meters are usually stocked in the UAE, while power quality analysers and software projects take longer.
Send bidders the meter schedule, CT ratios and integration requirements, then post your requirement to UAE metering suppliers.
