Pipeline pigs are devices pushed through a pipe by the flow to clean it, separate products, gauge the bore or inspect the wall, and pigging equipment is the launcher, receiver and signaller hardware that handles them. This page covers pig types, trap design, closure safety, piggability checks and how UAE buyers specify and source the equipment.

A pipeline pig is a device that travels inside a pipe, driven by the product or by a pushing fluid, to clean, separate, gauge or inspect the line. Pigging equipment is everything that puts the pig in and takes it out again: the launcher, the receiver, their closures and valves, and the signallers that tell the control room where the pig is. For UAE operators this is the hardware side of pipeline equipment and materials, and it is bought by integrity engineers, EPC contractors and pipeline operators in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the northern emirates.
The Pigging Products and Services Association (PPSA) sorts pigs into utility pigs, which clean or seal, and intelligent pigs, which log data. That split is a useful way to read a tender: utility pigs are consumables you buy in batches, while intelligent pigs are normally hired with the inspection service.
| Pig or item | What it does | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Foam pig | Molded polyurethane foam, sometimes with solid strips or abrasives bonded on; first runs and swabbing | Density, oversize, coating or abrasive strips |
| Solid cast pig | One-piece polyurethane moulding for cleaning and sealing | Hardness, disc or cup profile, bidirectional or not |
| Mandrel pig | Central tube with cups, discs and brushes assembled for the job | Cup and disc material, brush type, bypass ports |
| Sphere | Solid or inflated with glycol or water; liquids lines and batching | Inflation medium, fit in the line and in the trap |
| Gel pig | Gelled liquid used alone or with conventional pigs | Batching, debris pick-up, hydrocarbon or dehydrating type |
| Intelligent pig | Records geometry, metal loss, cracks, leaks or mapping data | Tool type, run speed window, launcher length |
| Launcher and receiver (pig traps) | Insert, launch, receive and remove pigs without stopping flow | Design pressure, closure type and safety lock, kicker and drain lines |
| Pig signaller | Detects passage of a pig and signals it | Intrusive or non-intrusive, hazardous area rating |
Cleaning of the line itself is also sold as a service, which is covered separately under pipeline cleaning services. This page is about the equipment you buy or specify.
Choose the pig by the job and by the line, in that order. Start with what you need to achieve: removing wax or scale, separating two products, dewatering after a hydrotest, proving the bore, or inspecting the wall. Then check the line: diameter changes, tight bends, valves that are not full bore, and whether the trap can handle the pig length.
A foam pig compresses, so it is the usual first run in a line of unknown condition. If a foam pig comes back intact the line is probably open enough for a harder cleaning pig. If it comes back chewed or does not come back, you have learned something cheaply. A common mistake is sending a steel-bodied mandrel pig first because it cleans better, and then recovering it from a restriction.
Gas lines and liquids lines behave differently. Gel pigs work well where debris is heavy because they do not wear out, but they can be diluted or gas-cut, which is why PPSA advises placing a conventional pig at the back of a gel train when displacing with gas. Spheres suit liquids lines where the trap is built for them and the line has no tees without bars.
An intelligent pig run is the last step, not the first. Operators normally run a cleaning pig and a gauging or geometry pass before the inspection tool, so a dent or valve left part closed does not trap a very expensive tool. The data the tool returns, such as metal loss or geometry, only has value if the line was clean when it ran.
A pig trap is a pressure vessel with a quick opening closure, built to the pipeline code and to the operator's specification. PPSA notes that traps are usually made to the user's specification and that closures are proprietary and critical to the system, so the closure is where you spend your review time.
Ask for the design code and the closure code in writing. Pipeline traps are commonly designed to the pipeline code for the barrel (ASME B31.4 for liquids, ASME B31.8 for gas) with the closure designed under a pressure vessel code, but confirm this against the ADNOC company specification for your project, because the split is project specific.
Trap closures also interact with insulating joints used for corrosion protection near stations; if the line is cathodically protected, the cathodic protection systems design should place any insulating joint and the trap relative to each other before fabrication.
Heat and dust matter most in storage, on the pad and in the trap. Polyurethane pigs and foam stored in open yards in summer can soften, take a set or degrade faster than the datasheet suggests, so store spares shaded and rotate stock. Sand and dust on the closure seal face and the O-ring can prevent a trap from sealing, so ask for dust caps and a seal replacement kit with the trap.
Coastal and sabkha locations add salt. Carbon steel traps and fittings need the coating system you would specify for any external pipework, and the pipeline coatings specification should cover trap barrels and field joints so the first corroding component is not the one that is opened most often. These points are engineering practice, not a published UAE rule, so write them into your own specification.
Supply splits between local polyurethane pig makers, regional fabricators of pig traps and international inspection tool owners. Pipeworktech, a member of PPSA, lists a UAE address in the Ajman Free Zone and makes polyurethane pigs for proving and cleaning, serving the Middle East and Asia. Pig traps are fabricated pressure vessels, so fabrication capacity matters more than catalogue stock. ListGCC lists RMA Middle East for pig launcher and receiver traps, pig signallers and insulating joints, a Bahrain-based maker of that hardware.
Lead time depends on fabrication slot, closure supply, code stamping, inspection and documentation review. Standard cleaning pigs from stock ship quickly. Custom traps with special closures and third party inspection take months, and an ADNOC review cycle adds to that. Ask each bidder for the fabrication schedule and the closure source before award. To compare UAE suppliers, post your requirement with line diameter, pressure, fluid and the pig types you plan to run.
