Mechanical Seals Suppliers, UAE

Mechanical seals in the UAE are the rotating face seals that stop leakage where a pump, mixer or compressor shaft passes through its casing, in refineries, gas plants, desalination, district cooling and building services. This page lists UAE mechanical seal suppliers and explains seal types, the API 682 code and piping plans, EN 12756 dimensions, face materials, and what moves price and lead time.

What are mechanical seals and which types do UAE plants use?

A mechanical seal stops a pumped fluid escaping along a rotating shaft by pressing two very flat rings together: one turns with the shaft, the other is fixed in the gland, and a fluid film a few microns thick between them carries the load. Springs or a metal bellows keep the faces closed, and O-rings or flexible graphite seal the parts that do not rotate. In the UAE, mechanical seals are the highest value item in the range of seals and gaskets for UAE plants, and the one most often behind an unplanned pump stop.

Seal design follows the pump and the hazard. A chilled water pump in a district cooling plant can run on a simple component seal, while a hydrocarbon pump at Ruwais needs an engineered cartridge to API 682.

Seal typeTypical UAE useKey specification points
Component seal (elastomer bellows or pusher)HVAC, chilled water, potable water and drainage pumpsShaft size, EN 12756 length (N or K), face pair, elastomer
Single cartridge sealGeneral process, condensate, cooling water and seawater pumpsPre-set cartridge, gland bolt pattern, flush plan, face materials
Dual cartridge seal, unpressurisedVolatile hydrocarbons where leakage must be capturedBuffer fluid, Plan 52 reservoir, leak detection
Dual cartridge seal, pressurisedToxic, flashing or dirty fluids where no process leakage is allowedBarrier fluid and pressure, Plan 53A, 53B, 53C or 54 system
Metal bellows sealHot oil and high temperature hydrocarbon serviceBellows alloy, flexible graphite secondary seals, steam quench
Split sealLarge pumps and mixers where dismantling for a seal change is costlyShaft size, pressure limit, onsite fitting skill

Seals rarely fail alone. The O-rings inside them are listed under O-rings and oil seals, the flange joints on the seal support piping use spiral wound and sheet gaskets, and most engineered seals go into API 610 process pumps for UAE refineries and gas plants.

How do you choose a mechanical seal for UAE conditions?

Pick the arrangement from the hazard of the fluid, the face materials from its cleanliness, and the support plan from its temperature and vapour pressure. In the UAE the usual traps are seawater and sand, hot condensate that flashes across the faces, and pumps that run dry during start-up.

Face materials

Silicon carbide is the most common hard face. Reaction bonded silicon carbide contains free silicon that strong oxidising chemicals attack, while alpha sintered silicon carbide has none and is the more corrosion resistant grade. Carbon graphite is self-lubricating and forgiving when the film is thin, but much softer, so it wears in sandy or abrasive water. Tungsten carbide is tough and can often be relapped and reused. For brine and intake pumps carrying fine sand, many UAE plants run silicon carbide against silicon carbide, accepting that hard pairs need a stable liquid film and dislike dry running.

Heat and flashing

Hot water, condensate and light hydrocarbons can vaporise between the faces, which then run dry and crack. The answer is usually a cooler flush (Plan 23 for hot water), a higher seal chamber pressure, or a dual seal with a barrier fluid. Give the seal vendor the fluid vapour pressure at pumping temperature, not just the pump discharge pressure.

Chlorides and metal parts

Seawater and brine attack standard stainless springs and glands over time. Ask what alloy the springs, set screws and drive parts are made from for chloride service, and whether the seal has been used on seawater pumps in the Gulf before.

Which standards apply to mechanical seals in the UAE?

Mechanical seals in the UAE are bought to international standards named in the pump or plant specification. They were not on the MoIAT regulated products list we checked as of 2026, so the owner's specification, for example an ADNOC group engineering standard, sets which code applies.

StandardWhat it coversWhere UAE buyers use it
API Std 682, 4th editionSeal categories, types, arrangements, piping plans and qualification testing for shafts 20 to 110 mmRefinery, gas and petrochemical pumps; also ASME B73 and retrofitted pumps
API 682 seal code (Annex D)Eight-field code for category, arrangement, type, containment, gasket, faces, shaft size and piping planDatasheets and spares lists
EN 12756Principal dimensions, designation and material codes for mechanical sealsBuilding services and water pumps of European design
ISO 3069Seal cavity dimensions of end-suction centrifugal pumpsChecking that an EN 12756 seal fits the pump

API 682 is written mainly for hazardous, flammable and toxic services, and it is referenced normatively by API 610. Its arrangements are defined as one seal per cartridge (Arrangement 1), two seals with a buffer fluid at lower pressure than the process (Arrangement 2) and two seals with a barrier fluid at higher pressure (Arrangement 3). Types are A (rotating pusher), B (rotating metal bellows) and C (stationary metal bellows). Seals built to EN 12756 dimensions fit an ISO 3069 type S cavity, which is how a UAE facilities team can swap brands on a standard water pump.

The piping plan is the second half of the specification. Plan 11 (flush from pump discharge) serves most single seals on clean fluids, Plan 32 brings clean flush from outside the pump, Plan 52 serves most unpressurised dual seals, and Plans 53A, 53B and 53C pressurise a barrier fluid, with John Crane noting gas entrainment risk on Plan 53A above 10 barg. API 682 requires Plans 52 and 53 reservoirs to hold enough fluid for 28 days without refilling.

How do you choose a mechanical seal supplier in the UAE?

Buy engineered API seals from the seal manufacturer or its authorised UAE service centre, which can size the seal, supply the support system and repair it later. Stockists are fine for standard EN 12756 component seals on water and HVAC pumps.

  • Send the pump datasheet, fluid, temperature, suction and discharge pressure, vapour pressure, shaft size and speed, and the current seal code if there is one.
  • Ask for the API 682 seal code and piping plan offered, the qualification test reference, and the face and elastomer materials.
  • Check repair capability in the UAE: relapping, re-testing and turnaround time for cartridges.

Seal makers on ListGCC include John Crane mechanical seals and support systems, EagleBurgmann cartridge and gas seals, Flowserve seals supplied with its API pumps, AESSEAL cartridge seals and bearing protectors and Chesterton split seals and packing. Hydraulic cylinders use a different family, hydraulic rod and piston seals. See our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers, or post your requirement for quotes from several UAE seal suppliers.

What drives the price and lead time of mechanical seals in the UAE?

Price rises with engineering: a dual pressurised cartridge with a Plan 53B accumulator costs many times a standard component seal for the same shaft. Face materials, exotic alloys, seal size and the witnessed testing called up by the specification add to it.

Standard component seals and common cartridges are often stocked in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Engineered API seals and support systems are typically made to order, and a seal repaired at a UAE service centre usually comes back far faster than a new one shipped through Jebel Ali. For critical pumps, hold a spare cartridge and agree a repair exchange with the supplier before the shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mechanical Seals

What is the difference between a component and a cartridge mechanical seal?
A component mechanical seal is supplied as loose parts that the fitter sets on the shaft, so accuracy depends on the installer. A cartridge seal arrives pre-assembled and pre-set on its own sleeve and gland, which reduces fitting errors. UAE refineries specify cartridges to API 682 for hazardous pumps.
What does API 682 Arrangement 2 mean?
API 682 Arrangement 2 is a dual mechanical seal with an unpressurised buffer fluid between the two seals, kept at lower pressure than the process. Process leakage across the inner seal is captured in the buffer system, usually a Plan 52 reservoir, instead of escaping to atmosphere.
Which mechanical seal faces suit sandy seawater in the UAE?
For sandy seawater and brine pumps in the UAE, silicon carbide against silicon carbide is a common choice because both faces resist abrasion. Hard pairs need a stable liquid film, so avoid dry running, and pair the seal with a suitable flush plan from the seal vendor.
Will an EN 12756 mechanical seal fit any pump?
An EN 12756 mechanical seal fits pumps whose seal cavity follows ISO 3069 type S, which covers many European-designed end-suction pumps used in UAE buildings and water plants. Check shaft diameter, the N or K length version and cavity depth before swapping brands.
Do mechanical seals need ECAS or MoIAT certification in the UAE?
Mechanical seals were not on the MoIAT regulated products list when checked as of 2026, so ECAS is not normally required. The pump or plant specification, such as an ADNOC group standard, sets the design code, testing and approved vendors instead. Confirm with the project before ordering.
Can a failed mechanical seal be repaired in the UAE?
Many cartridge mechanical seals can be repaired in the UAE by the manufacturer or an authorised service centre, which relaps or replaces faces, renews elastomers and springs, and pressure tests the cartridge. Repair is usually faster than buying new, so agree repair terms when you buy the seal.
What is an API 682 piping plan?
An API 682 piping plan is a numbered arrangement for flushing, cooling, buffering or quenching a mechanical seal. Plan 11 recirculates fluid from the pump discharge for single seals, Plan 52 supplies buffer fluid to unpressurised dual seals, and Plans 53A to 53C pressurise barrier fluid.
