What are load cells, and which types do UAE weighing projects use?
A load cell is a transducer that turns force into an electrical signal, usually through strain gauges bonded to a machined steel element, and a weight indicator or PLC converts that signal into a reading. Load cells belong to the wider range of sensors and switches for UAE automation. Finished scales, indicators and verification are covered on the companion page for weighing scales and balances in the UAE; this page is about the sensor inside them and the choices an engineer makes when buying cells on their own.
| Load cell type | Typical UAE use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Single point | Bench and platform scales, packing stations, small hoppers on filling lines | Capacity, maximum platform size, tolerance to off-centre loads |
| Bending beam and single-ended shear beam | Floor scales, small tanks, conveyor and pallet weighing | Capacity, mounting kit, sealing method |
| Double-ended shear beam | Truck weighbridges at quarries, ports and waste sites; large tanks | Capacity per cell, centre load introduction, link or rocker mount |
| Compression canister and rocker column | High capacity weighbridges and silos, replacement of older cells | Check rods, stay rods and bumper bolts the design needs |
| S-type (tension and compression) | Suspended hoppers, additive dosing, force testing rigs | Tension or compression duty, rod end fittings |
| Ring torsion | Low profile tank and batching scales | Installed height, accuracy class |
| Hydraulic | Scales where no electronics should sit on the deck | Fluid lines, summing system |
Rice Lake describes the double-ended shear beam as the most widely used vehicle scale load cell in North America, and points out that canister and rocker column cells need check rods to hold the structure in place, which adds maintenance. So-called digital load cells convert the signal inside the housing, which allows diagnostics cell by cell but also puts more electronics in the scale where vibration and moisture can reach them. Whatever the type, each cell in a multi-cell scale should carry an equal share of the load, so level foundations matter as much as the cells.
Cranes and aerial platforms often combine overload load cells with tilt and inclination sensors and travel limit switches for crane end positions, and weighing skids on pumps may also carry vibration sensors for condition monitoring.
How do UAE heat, humidity and salt air affect load cells?
Heat matters first. Under OIML R 60, a load cell only needs a temperature marking when its range differs from minus 10 to plus 40 degrees Celsius, so an unmarked cell has been assessed for that standard band, and a steel weighbridge deck in an Abu Dhabi or Dubai summer is hotter than that.
Temperature range and drift
Read the marking and the datasheet together. Look for a stated temperature range on the label, the compensated range and the operating range, and compare them with the deck or tank skin temperature at the site, not the shaded air temperature. Keep junction boxes and cable runs out of direct sun, and allow time after installation for the structure to reach a steady temperature before calibration.
Material and sealing
Rice Lake notes that tool alloy steel is the most common load cell material because grades such as 4330 and 4340 give low creep and hysteresis, while stainless steel cells cost more and suit corrosive, high-moisture duty when their gauge cavity is hermetically sealed. A stainless cell without hermetic sealing offers little beyond corrosion resistance. For weighbridges near Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port or Ruwais and for washdown areas in food plants, ask for welded hermetic sealing rather than potting. The OIML marking can also carry a humidity code (NH, CH or SH), which tells you which humidity test the cell passed.
Water, sand and side loads
Weighbridge pits collect sand and, after winter rain, water. Plan drainage, specify junction boxes with a matching ingress rating and protect cables in conduit. Mounting kits that limit side loads and overloads protect the cells when trucks brake on the deck or tanks expand in the heat.
What do OIML accuracy classes such as C3 mean on a load cell?
The class marking on an OIML load cell is a letter for the accuracy class (A, B, C or D) followed by the maximum number of verification intervals in thousands, so C3 means class C with 3,000 intervals. Measurement Canada's guide to OIML markings explains the code.
HBM gives typical uses: D1 to C2 for simple building material scales for sand, cement or water, C3 for scales that dose additives and for machine quality checks, C3 to C6 for shop counter scales and filling machines, and C6 for dynamic checkweighers. Siemens states that most SIWAREX cells meet class C3. For a trade weighbridge, the class and interval count of the cells must support the verification interval the finished scale is approved for, which the weighbridge supplier should demonstrate in writing.
Which standards and approvals apply to load cells in the UAE?
As of 2026, load cells in the UAE are specified against OIML R 60, fall under MoIAT legal metrology rules when they form part of a weighing instrument used in trade, and need ECAS-Ex certification when installed in an explosive atmosphere. We checked these documents in October 2026.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| OIML R 60-1:2021, adopted as GSO OIML R 60-1:2025 (approved 14 October 2025) | Metrological and technical requirements for load cells | OIML; GCC Standardization Organization |
| Legal measuring instruments regulation (Board Chairman Decision No. 75 of 2016) | Weighing instruments used in trade, with their accessories and supporting devices | MoIAT |
| ECAS-Ex (Cabinet Decision No. 23 of 2016) | Load cells, junction boxes and barriers in hazardous areas such as fuel depots and chemical plants | MoIAT, on IECEx documents |
MoIAT's list of regulated products says the legal requirements of each legal measuring instrument and its accessories are set through technical regulations or instructions, and asks for a test report from an accredited laboratory. For ECAS-Ex it asks for the IECEx test report, IECEx certificate, quality assessment report and, where the applicant is a trader or agent, proof of exclusive distributorship. The guide to ECAS and EQM conformity in the UAE walks through the process. Periodic checks of finished scales use test weights and calibration equipment.
Who supplies load cells in the UAE?
UAE buyers source load cells from authorised distributors of weighing brands, from scale service companies that install and verify weighbridges, from builders of concrete batching plants and overhead cranes who fit cells as part of the machine, and from stockists holding common capacities. Brands with load cell ranges include:
- Siemens SIWAREX load cells, from 0.3 kg to 500 t in single point, bending beam, shear beam, double shear beam, S-type, compression and ring torsion designs, with a hygienic WL270 CD-H version.
- Rice Lake double-ended shear beam, canister and compression load cells in alloy and stainless steel for truck, tank and process scales.
- Mettler Toledo load cells and weigh modules for tank, hopper and vehicle weighing.
Before ordering, ask for the class marking, the test certificate for each cell, cable length and colour code, and whether replacements must come from the same maker. Rice Lake warns that many load cells are proprietary to one manufacturer, which can raise maintenance costs. Cells feeding a control system usually go through a weighing module into PLC controllers. For more checks, read the guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, or post your requirement for quotes.
What drives the price and lead time of load cells in the UAE?
Load cell price in the UAE rises with capacity, steel grade and sealing, accuracy class and hazardous area approval, and lead time depends on whether that exact capacity and cable length is held in Dubai stock.
- Design and capacity: high capacity double-ended beams and canisters cost more than single point cells.
- Material: hermetically sealed stainless steel costs more than alloy steel with potted or welded seals.
- Class: C6 cells and cells with special temperature marking carry a premium over D or C3 cells.
- Approvals: Ex certification adds cost and limits which stock can be used.
- Mounting hardware: weigh modules, rockers, links and summing boxes are often missed in the first quote.
Weighbridge owners should keep at least one spare cell of the installed model; a single failed cell can take the scale out of service.
