Grinding mills and ball mills in the UAE are the rotating drums that reduce crushed ore, clinker, limestone and other minerals to a fine powder using steel balls or other media. This page explains the mill types, what to specify for liners, drives and Gulf heat, which approvals apply, and how to compare mill suppliers.

A ball mill is a hollow cylindrical shell that rotates on a horizontal or slightly inclined axis, partly filled with grinding media and the material to be ground. The balls are lifted on the rising side and cascade down, so particles are broken by impact and attrition. Grinding mills are the wider family, and ball mills are the most common type. In the mineral processing equipment range for the UAE they are the stage between crushing and separation.
Three facts decide most designs. Past the critical speed the balls rotate with the shell and stop grinding, so mills run below it. Media can be steel, stainless steel, ceramic, rubber or flint pebbles, and smaller media give a finer product. Liners are usually manganese steel or rubber, and one reference notes less wear in rubber lined mills.
| Mill type | Typical UAE use | Specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Wet ball mill | Ore preparation for flotation cells or leaching equipment, slurry grinding of minerals | Feed and product size, slurry density, liner and media choice, installed power |
| Dry ball mill | Cement and mineral powders such as limestone fillers | Mill diameter and length, compartments, air sweep, separator, dust control |
| Cement mill with separator | Clinker and gypsum grinding at cement works | Throughput in tonnes per hour, product fineness, drive and gearbox |
| Vertical roller mill | Raw meal, cement and gypsum where energy per tonne matters | Table diameter, product rate, fineness, gearbox rating |
| Laboratory and pilot mills | Test work before a plant purchase | Batch size, jar or drum material, speed control |
The clearest UAE example is cement. A trade report from 2006 describes an expansion of the cement grinding section at a plant in the Emirates: a ball mill of 4.2 by 13 metres rated at 100 tonnes per hour, installed in 8.5 months, followed by a separator mill of 4.4 by 14 metres rated at 135 tonnes per hour, installed in 7.5 months. Those figures show the scale and the build time that cement grinding projects work to. See also Portland cement for the product side.
Smaller mills serve minerals, fillers and pilot plants. Food milling is a different market with its own hygiene and halal rules; see food grinding and milling equipment, and flour milling equipment for grain.
Mills are large rotating machines with gearboxes, bearings and motors, so ambient heat and fine dust are the main Gulf design factors. Ask each supplier to state the ambient temperature behind every rating.
No single UAE standard covers the mill itself; the controls sit on the site, the dust, and the electrical items. As of 2026, treat the table as a checklist to confirm with the authority.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental licence from the local authority for mining, crushing and quarrying sites | Mills inside a quarry or crusher operation | Local environmental authority under federal rules |
| Federal Cabinet Resolution No. 20 of 2008 and later ministerial resolutions on quarries and crushers | Crushing and grinding sites | Federal environment ministry |
| Conformity of regulated electrical products | Panels, drives and motors on the mill | MoIAT, with ECAS or EQM where listed |
A 2018 overview of the UAE regime lists these federal instruments, including a duty to restore sites as extraction proceeds. Confirm the current position with the authority; for electrical items read the guide to ECAS and EQM product conformity in the UAE.
Large mills are built to order by original makers or engineering contractors and shipped through Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port. Distributors mainly supply liners, grinding media, gearbox parts and service. Upstream, MEKA lists jaw, cone and impact crushing plants and Sandvik lists crushing and rock tools in its range; see stone crushers and screening plants for that stage. For the slurry leaving a wet mill, ITT Goulds Pumps lists vertical and slurry pumps and Ruhrpumpen lists slurry and industrial pumps.
Compare bids on: shell and trunnion design, liner material, media size and consumption, drive type and gearbox rating, lubrication system, and spares. Compare mills with gravity separation equipment, magnetic separators and thickeners and clarifiers downstream, since the grind size sets what they can do. Check authorisation using the guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Liners, grinding media and gearbox parts wear first. Media is consumed continuously, and smaller media give a finer product, so ask each supplier for an expected media consumption from a test on your material and a spares list for two years. Rubber liners reduce wear but have temperature limits, which matters under a UAE summer roof. Keep a relining plan and the lifting gear to carry it out.
Price follows shell size, installed power, liner and media specification, and the drive and gearbox. Lead time follows manufacturing and shipping of heavy shell sections, which is why the cement project above took 8.5 and 7.5 months for installation alone. Ask for a written schedule covering fabrication, shipment, erection and commissioning, and post your requirement with feed size, product size and throughput.
