What are flanges, and which types do UAE projects use?

A flange is a disc or ring at the end of a pipe with bolt holes, used to join pipe to another flange, a valve, a pump or a vessel nozzle with a gasket between them. They sit inside the pipe fittings and flanges family and are the part of a line you can unbolt without cutting.

Flange typeHow it fitsTypical UAE use
Weld neckButt-welded to the pipe, long tapered hub spreads stressHigh pressure, high temperature and cyclic lines in refineries and gas plants
Slip-onPipe slides in, fillet welded inside and outLower pressure water, cooling and utility lines
BlindSolid disc that closes a pipe end or nozzleIsolation, hydrotest ends and future tie-ins
Socket weldPipe sits in a recess and is fillet weldedSmall-bore, high-pressure lines
ThreadedScrewed onto pipe, no weldingUtility air and water where the piping class allows
Lap jointLoose flange over a stub endLines that are dismantled often, or stainless lines with carbon steel flanges
Orifice, swivel ring, anchor, spectacle blindSpecial forms for flow measurement, alignment or isolationProcess units and pipelines

The full range of faces, materials and joining methods is covered in the pipe fittings and flanges standards guide. This page goes into ordering and selection.

How do ASME B16.5 and B16.47 classes work?

ASME B16.5 sets the dimensions, ratings, materials, tolerances, marking and testing for flanges from NPS 1/2 to NPS 24, while B16.47 takes over from NPS 26 to NPS 60. The class number, not a pressure in bar, tells you how much pressure the flange can carry at a given temperature and material.

ASME lists B16.5 classes as 150, 300, 400, 600, 900 and 1500 across NPS 1/2 to NPS 24, with Class 2500 only up to NPS 12. ASME's page for B16.47 lists NPS 26 to NPS 60 in classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600 and 900. Both limit flanges to cast or forged material, with blind flanges also allowed from plate. A B16.5 flange will not bolt to a B16.47 flange of the same class and size in most cases, so say which standard you need. The ASME pages for each standard show a current 2025 edition; confirm the edition in your piping class.

How to read a flange order line

  1. Size in NPS, for example 6 inch.
  2. Pressure class, for example 300.
  3. Type, for example weld neck, and face, such as raised face or ring type joint.
  4. Bore or schedule matched to the pipe, for example schedule 80.
  5. Material specification and grade, for example ASTM A105 or A182 F316L.
  6. Certificate type, for example EN 10204 3.1.

Leaving out the bore or the face is the most common reason a delivery arrives unusable.

What bolting and gaskets go with flanges?

A flange joint is a system of flange pair, gasket and bolting, and the gasket and bolts must suit the class and the fluid. ASME B16.5 includes requirements and recommendations for flange bolting, gaskets and joints, so the standard itself treats them together.

Gaskets between flanges range from compressed fibre to spiral wound and ring type joint; see gasket sheets and spiral wound gaskets for the options. Studs and nuts come from threaded rods and studs and bolts and nuts, and controlled tightening uses hydraulic torque wrenches. Mixing stainless flanges with carbon steel studs in a wet area invites galvanic attack at the joint, so check that the bolt material suits the flange.

How do UAE conditions affect flange selection?

UAE flanges face heat, salt air and, in parts of the oil and gas sector, sour gas. These change the material, the face protection and how you store goods rather than the basic flange geometry.

  • Salt air at Jebel Ali, Ruwais and Musaffah. Machined faces pit in open laydown yards. Ask for protective covers, rust preventive and covered storage.
  • Seawater and brackish water. Carbon steel may not be enough; duplex and stainless flanges are common, and swivel ring or lap joint types ease alignment.
  • Sour service. Where H2S is present the piping class calls for NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 controls; give the operator specification number on the order.

Which standards and approvals apply to flanges in the UAE?

As of 2026, flanges in the UAE are controlled by the project specification and inspection rather than a dedicated MoIAT product scheme for industrial piping. The documents that matter are the standard, the material spec and the inspection certificate.

Who supplies flanges in the UAE?

Flanges reach UAE buyers from overseas forge shops through agents, from stockists in Jebel Ali, Sharjah and Musaffah, and from local manufacturers. A Gulf News report describes a UAE flange maker at Dubai Industrial City with an expanded plant of more than 80,000 sq ft making standard and custom flanges in carbon steel, stainless, duplex and super duplex, and holding ICV certification.

Many flanges start as forgings and rolled rings. Italian maker Metalfar forged steel flanges publish weld neck, slip-on, blind, threaded, socket weld, lap joint and orifice types to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, with stub ends and spectacle blinds. Companion products are butt-weld fittings, stainless steel fittings, socket-weld fittings for small-bore branches and pipe supports and hangers for the lines the flanges join.

Ask for the original mill certificate, the forge shop name, whether the item is in stock, and the delivery date to site. To compare offers on one material list, post your requirement with size, class, face, material and certificate type. The sourcing guide lists further checks.

What affects the price and lead time of flanges in the UAE?

Common carbon steel weld neck and slip-on flanges in standard classes are held in UAE stock. Large diameters, high classes, special forms and alloy grades are made to order. The main drivers are material, size and class, testing, certificate type and whether the source is on the operator's approved list.

  • Duplex, super duplex and nickel alloys cost more and take longer than A105.
  • Class 900 and above, and B16.47 sizes, have longer forging lead times.
  • 3.2 certificates and witnessed tests add schedule time.

Frequently Asked Questions — Flanges

What is the difference between a weld neck and a slip-on flange?
A weld neck flange is butt-welded to the pipe through a tapered hub, which spreads stress and suits high pressure and temperature. A slip-on flange slides over the pipe and is fillet welded, which is cheaper and suits lower duty lines.
What does flange class 150 or 300 mean?
The class is a pressure rating number under ASME B16.5 that links allowable pressure to temperature and material group. A higher class carries more pressure and has thicker flanges and more bolting. It is not a direct pressure in bar.
Which flange standard covers sizes above NPS 24?
ASME B16.47 covers large diameter steel flanges from NPS 26 to NPS 60, while B16.5 stops at NPS 24. Say which standard you need on the order because a B16.5 and a B16.47 flange of the same class and size will not normally mate.
Do flanges in the UAE need a MoIAT certificate?
As of 2026, industrial piping flanges are usually controlled by the project specification, mill certificates and inspection rather than a dedicated MoIAT scheme. Check the HS code against the ECAS and EQM lists, and confirm any operator approval list with the buyer.
Which gasket and bolts should I use with a flange?
Match the gasket to the flange face, class, temperature and fluid: spiral wound for most process flanges, ring type joint for RTJ faces. Use studs and nuts of a grade suited to the flange material, and avoid carbon steel bolts on wet stainless joints.
How do I keep flange faces from rusting in UAE storage?
Keep protective covers on until installation, apply rust preventive to machined faces, store under cover away from the sea air, and keep carbon steel and stainless apart. Inspect faces on receipt, since pitted raised faces may need machining or rejection.
What should a flange enquiry include?
State size, pressure class, type, face, bore or schedule, material and grade, quantity, certificate type such as EN 10204 3.1, any NACE or operator specification, and the delivery site. Missing bore or face details are the most common cause of wrong deliveries.
