What are electric hoists and which types do UAE buyers order?
An electric hoist is a motor-driven unit that raises and lowers a freely hanging load on a load chain or a wire rope drum, either hung from a fixed point or carried by a trolley along a beam. It is the working part of most items in the lifting equipment range for UAE workshops and plants: the hoist rides on the bridge of an overhead travelling crane, under the beam of a gantry crane in an open bay or yard, or on the arm of a pillar or wall jib crane at a machine.
UAE orders come mostly from fabrication and machine shops in Musaffah, Al Quoz and the Sharjah industrial areas, pump and motor service workshops, district cooling and desalination plant rooms, warehouses in JAFZA and KEZAD, and oil and gas maintenance bays. The type follows the load, the lift and how often the hoist runs.
| Hoist type | Typical UAE job | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Electric chain hoist on a hook or lug | Fixed lifting points in plant rooms, pump removal, assembly stations | Compact body, low cost, short and medium lifts, light to medium loads |
| Electric chain hoist with push or motorised trolley | Monorails, single girder cranes, light crane systems in fabrication shops | Beam flange width, headroom, travel speed, trolley drive |
| Wire rope hoist, normal headroom | Single and double girder cranes in steel stockholding, precast and heavy fabrication | Higher capacity, long lifts, faster speeds, higher duty groups |
| Wire rope hoist, low headroom | Existing sheds where the eaves leave little room above the hook | Hook height gained versus a normal headroom unit, end approach |
| Explosion-protected chain or wire rope hoist | Compressor houses, refinery and gas plant workshops, paint shops | Hazardous zone, gas group, temperature class, certificate for the exact model |
| Event and stage chain hoist | Exhibition halls and event venues in Dubai and Abu Dhabi | Rigging use, brake arrangement and control system set by the rigging contractor |
Chain hoists are lighter, cheaper and easier to move between beams; wire rope hoists carry heavier loads over longer lifts and are the usual choice on a production crane. Hand-operated chain blocks and lever hoists are a different purchase, covered under chain hoists and winches, and every hoist still needs certified slings, shackles and below-the-hook gear to connect the load.
How do you match an electric hoist to UAE heat and duty?
Size an electric hoist on its duty class and its rated ambient temperature, not on tonnage alone. A hoist that is correct on capacity but rated for occasional use, or for cooler air than it will meet under a UAE roof in August, overheats, trips and wears its brake early.
Duty class and the load spectrum
Duty classes describe how hard a hoist works over its life. Demag's summary of the systems describes FEM 1Am as light to medium service, 2m as medium to heavy and 3m as heavy service, and the ASME and HMI H3 class as general service running up to 25% of the work period, with H4 for a high volume of heavy loads. FEM classes are worked out from the load spectrum and operating time, while the ASME method uses starts per hour, running minutes per hour and the mean effective load. Give each supplier the same four numbers: average load as a share of capacity, lifts per hour, lift height and hours per shift. A maintenance hoist in a pump house and a hoist feeding a cutting line may share a capacity but not a duty group.
Ambient temperature at hoist level
Catalogue ratings assume a stated ambient. Demag's DC chain hoist highlights sheet, for example, gives an IP55 enclosure, insulation class F, a 60% duty factor with 360 starts per hour, and reliable operation from -20 °C to +45 °C without reducing the duty factor, with operation up to 60 °C and higher available as an option. In an uninsulated shed in Musaffah or Jebel Ali the air at the girder can be far hotter than the shop floor, so write the maximum temperature at hoist height into the enquiry and ask the supplier to confirm in writing whether the motor, brake and contactors hold their duty at that figure or need a high-ambient option.
Dust, humidity and coastal plants
Fine dust settles on chain and rope lubricant and turns it abrasive, so ask which lubricant suits a dusty site and how often the chain should be cleaned. Hoists working outdoors or in open-sided sheds near the sea at Jebel Ali, Khalifa, Hamriyah or Ruwais need a weather canopy or rain cover, a coating suited to salt air and, where the hoist sits idle overnight, anti-condensation heating in the motor and panel. Pendants and limit switches should be sealed against sand.
Speed control and overload protection
Two-speed motors give a fast lift and a slow creep for setting down; inverter control adds smooth variable speed for machined parts, moulds and glass. Ask how the hoist limits overload. Demag, for example, uses a slipping clutch with automatic cut-out by speed monitoring and places the brake before the clutch in the drive; other makers use electronic load limiters. Know which one you are buying and how it is tested.
Which inspection and certification rules apply to electric hoists in the UAE?
As of 2026, an electric hoist in the UAE has no single federal product approval; it is controlled through emirate-level examination rules, client specifications and, in hazardous areas, MoIAT's ECAS-Ex scheme. The two clearest published texts are Dubai Municipality's guideline and Sharjah's OSHJ-CoP-10.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or source |
|---|---|---|
| Test and certification by a third party accredited by EIAC once every 12 months; certificate issued only after repairs, listing serial number, technical details, tests and safe working load | Hoists, cranes and lifting gear in Dubai workplaces | Dubai Municipality, DM-HSD-GU48-ECLA2, version 5 (January 2025) |
| Third-party thorough examination after installation and before first use, then at least every 12 months for goods lifting | Lifting equipment in the Emirate of Sharjah | Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority, OSHJ-CoP-10 |
| ECAS-Ex certificate supported by IECEx evidence | Electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres; confirm the hoist model is in scope | Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) |
| EN 14492-2 for power-driven hoists, or ASME B30.16 for US-pattern overhead hoists | Design and manufacture, called up in project specifications | European and American standards bodies; ask for the maker's declaration |
| Owner lifting procedures and approved vendor lists | Hoists in ADNOC group plants, utilities and their contractors | The asset owner and its consultants |
At handover, collect the maker's declaration of conformity, the factory test certificate, the operating and maintenance manual and the first third-party certificate, and keep them at the site where the Dubai guideline expects the certificate to be. Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates apply their own occupational safety codes, so confirm the inspection body and interval with the site HSE team. Our overhead crane buying guide for the UAE and Saudi Arabia explains how the hoist's duty ties into the crane classification.
How do you choose an electric hoist supplier in the UAE?
Buy production and hazardous-area hoists from the manufacturer's UAE branch or an authorised distributor that stocks spares and can service and recertify the unit; a general stockist suits standard chain hoists for maintenance lifts. Many UAE cranes are built locally, with a crane builder fitting an imported hoist to its own girders, so ask who makes the hoist and who will hold its brake, contactor and chain spares in the country.
Hoist brands found in the UAE include Konecranes CXT wire rope and electric chain hoists; Demag DC-Pro chain hoists and DR and DH wire rope hoists; Kito ER2 electric chain hoists from Japan; Columbus McKinnon with CM Lodestar, Yale and Coffing; STAHL CraneSystems explosion-protected hoists; ABUS ABUCompact wire rope hoists; Verlinde Eurochain and Eurobloc; Street Crane ZX wire rope hoists; LIFTKET chain hoists for industry and stage rigging; GIS electric chain hoists from Switzerland; and HADEF chain and wire rope hoists from Germany.
- Send capacity, height of lift, hook approach, hoist and travel speeds, duty data, supply voltage and the ambient at hoist level.
- Ask for the duty class in FEM, ISO or ASME terms, the IP rating and the rated ambient in writing.
- Check the beam size and flange width the trolley fits, and the headroom from beam to hook.
- For gas plants, ask for the Ex marking and certificate of the complete hoist, not only the motor.
To collect comparable offers, post your electric hoist requirement with the duty data and a sketch of the beam or crane.
What affects the price and lead time of electric hoists in the UAE?
Hoist type, capacity, duty group and options set the price; two hoists of equal capacity can differ widely in cost when one is rated for heavy production duty and the other for occasional lifts.
- Chain or rope: wire rope hoists cost more but carry higher loads and duties.
- Controls: inverter speed control, radio remotes and load display add cost.
- Environment: high-ambient motors, outdoor protection, marine coating and explosion protection.
- Trolley and headroom: motorised trolleys and low-headroom designs.
- Certification: load test, EIAC-accredited certificate and the annual renewal.
Common chain hoist sizes are often held in UAE stock. Wire rope hoists with special lifts or speeds and explosion-protected units are usually factory orders shipped through Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port, followed by installation and the first examination.
