Desalting equipment in the UAE is the vessel, electrical and mixing hardware that strips salt and water from crude oil before it reaches the heaters and columns of a refinery. This page explains the desalter types, how Gulf crudes and heat shape the design, which codes and ICV rules apply as of 2026, and what moves price and delivery.
It is the largest industrial buyer in the emirate and the reason the city is a headquarters for oil, gas and petrochemicals supply. ADNOC is based in Abu Dhabi, and its downstream complex at Ruwais, in the Al Dhafra region, includes refining and a polyolefins complex run by Borouge, a joint venture between ADNOC and Borealis. Oil and Gas Journal reported in 2018 that Ruwais refining capacity stood at 817,000 barrels per day with plans to expand; that article is dated, so check current project status with ADNOC. Projects of this size create demand for refinery equipment, pipeline valves and heat exchangers.
Abu Dhabi suppliers range from upstream service companies to petrochemical traders. Common lines are wellhead equipment, drilling equipment and services, line pipes and fittings and storage tanks and terminals. Near the ports, AD Ports reports a clean petroleum storage facility and a chemical tank terminal among Khalifa Port's 2025 additions, and KEZAD lists polymers and speciality chemicals as sectors. See polyethylene and polypropylene for polymer supply.
Large operators run their own vendor registration and often weigh local content when they award work, so ask a supplier which end users have approved it. Offices of service firms sit in the city and Mussafah, while field bases are near the operating sites. Heavy items travel by road from Mussafah or by sea to Ruwais; confirm lifting and escort needs early.
State the standard, the material grade, test certificates and the third party inspection scheme. Read the industrial valves selection guide and the standards guide first. Hazardous storage and fire safety need approval from the relevant authorities; confirm the current rules with the Department of Economic Development and Abu Dhabi Civil Defence. Use post a requirement for like for like quotes.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
