XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) boards are manufactured by extruding polystyrene through a die to create a uniform closed-cell structure with excellent moisture resistance, compressive strength, and thermal performance (lambda 0.028 to 0.036 W/mK). EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) boards are produced by expanding polystyrene beads in a mould, creating a less dense closed-cell structure with good thermal performance (lambda 0.030 to 0.040 W/mK) at lower cost. Both are available in thicknesses from 20mm to 200mm.
In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, XPS is the preferred material for inverted (upside-down) flat roofs where the insulation sits above the waterproof membrane and is exposed to moisture, below-grade wall and foundation insulation where hydrostatic pressure resistance is needed, cold store and freezer floor insulation, and under-slab insulation with high load-bearing requirements. EPS is widely used for wall cavity insulation, standard roof insulation below membranes, insulated concrete formwork (ICF) systems, and lightweight fill. Key specifications include thermal conductivity, compressive strength (100 to 700 kPa for XPS, 60 to 250 kPa for EPS), water absorption (XPS is significantly lower), and fire classification (typically Class E — both materials require fire-retardant additives and must be protected by non-combustible layers in building assemblies).
