What does wind energy equipment cover in the UAE?

Wind energy equipment in the UAE means the turbines themselves, the towers, blades and drivetrain parts that make them up, and the specialist services that erect, inspect and maintain them. It forms one family inside the UAE energy and renewables sector, which covers national strategy and grid planning; this page deals with equipment and buying.

The UAE wind market is young and small next to solar. The reference project is the UAE Wind Program launched by Masdar in October 2023: 103.5 MW across Sir Bani Yas Island (45 MW), Delma Island (27 MW), Al Sila in Abu Dhabi (27 MW) and Al Halah in Fujairah (4.5 MW), built with PowerChina as EPC contractor and Goldwind as main equipment supplier, with EWEC buying the output of the three Abu Dhabi sites. Masdar described these as low-wind-speed sites made viable by larger turbines and better aerodynamics, with output peaking at night. UAE-based developers, EPC firms and service companies also run wind work elsewhere in the region, including the 400 MW Dumat Al Jandal project in Saudi Arabia that Masdar co-developed.

Product or serviceWhere it is usedKey specification points
Wind turbines, utility and small scaleIsland grids, coastal and inland wind farms, remote off-grid sitesIEC 61400-1 turbine class matched to site wind, rotor size for low wind speed, IECRE type certificate, hot climate operating range

Wind farm services: installation, inspection and O&MConstruction, commissioning and the operating yearsCrane and lifting plans, blade inspection by drone or rope access, oil analysis, availability guarantees

Wind projects draw on other families too. Erection needs heavy lift capacity from the cranes and lifting category, drivetrain repairs pull in industrial gears and gearboxes, and every turbine exports through a step-up unit from the power and distribution transformers range. Many hybrid sites, Sir Bani Yas among them, pair wind with solar PV systems, and some add batteries from the energy storage family to firm the output.

How do UAE heat, dust and coastal air affect wind turbines?

Heat forces turbines to cut power to protect the generator and converter, dust clogs cooling paths and wears blade edges, and salt air on islands and coasts corrodes towers and fasteners. All three should shape the specification before you compare prices.

High temperature derating

The best regional evidence comes from Kuwait's Shagaya wind farm, a 10 MW site of 2 MW turbines studied over two years of operating data. Researchers found annual high-temperature losses of about 1.2 percent, with the 40 to 44 C band causing most of them, and that dust on nacelle ventilation and internal equipment made the turbines start derating earlier on hot days. UAE summer conditions are comparable, so ask each turbine maker for the full-power ambient limit, the derating curve above it, and whether a hot-climate cooling package is offered.

Dust and sand

In the same Shagaya study, dust-related losses rose from 0.31 percent per turbine in the first year to 1.45 percent in the second, and more frequent cleaning cut them sharply. Put filter and cooler cleaning into the service contract with a defined interval. Airborne sand also erodes blade leading edges over time, which reduces aerodynamic performance; ask about leading-edge protection systems and the inspection cycle the maker recommends.

Salt air on islands and coasts

Sites such as Sir Bani Yas and Delma sit in the Arabian Gulf, and Al Halah is in Fujairah. Tower coatings, flange bolts, nacelle seals and electrical cabinets need a corrosion protection class suited to marine air, and the service plan should cover bolt torque checks and coating repairs.

Which standards and certificates apply to wind energy in the UAE?

As of 2026, no dedicated UAE technical regulation for wind turbines was identified (confirm with MoIAT), so wind projects in the country rely on the international IEC 61400 series, independent type certification and the grid connection requirements of the offtaker or network company. Electrical parts sold into the UAE may still fall under MoIAT conformity rules.

RequirementWhat it coversWho issues or checks it
IEC 61400-1 (edition 4, 2019, with Amendment 1 of 2025)Design requirements and turbine classes for all turbine sizesIEC; verified by the certification body
IEC 61400-2Design requirements for small wind turbinesIEC; verified by the certification body

Grid connection and power purchase termsFault ride through, power quality, metering and availabilityThe offtaker or network company (EWEC for the Abu Dhabi wind PPAs)
Product conformity for electrical itemsRegulated electrical products imported for the projectMoIAT (ECAS and EQM schemes)

IEC 61400-1 is the base design standard. Its 2019 edition extended the turbine classes to cover tropical cyclones and high turbulence, so check the class on the type certificate against the measured site wind, not just the brochure. IECRE's OD-501 scheme is how most certification bodies now issue type certificates, and lenders and offtakers usually ask for one. For small turbines on remote sites, IEC 61400-2 is the relevant design standard. For any panels, cables or switchgear the project imports, read our guide to ECAS and EQM conformity in the UAE and confirm with MoIAT which items need certificates.

How do you choose a wind energy supplier in the UAE?

For utility turbines you buy from the manufacturer, usually as a supply and install contract with a long service agreement; for parts and services you choose between the maker's own service arm, independent service providers and component specialists.

  • Turbine manufacturer: the only route for new utility turbines. Compare the type certificate, power curve at your site's air density and temperature, warranty, availability guarantee and the length of the service agreement.
  • Independent service provider: common after the warranty ends for inspections, blade repair and major component exchange. Ask for references on the same turbine platform and access to the maker's spare parts.
  • Component and spares suppliers: for bearings, gearboxes, converters, slip rings, filters and lubricants. Check traceability and that replacement parts match the certified design. General drivetrain items such as industrial bearings and lubricants are often available from UAE stock.

Before awarding, ask every bidder for the IECRE or equivalent type certificate, a site suitability statement, the hot-climate derating curve, a crane and logistics plan from port to site, and the spare parts list with lead times. Our guide on sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers vetting, and you can post your requirement to collect quotes from listed wind suppliers.

What drives the price and lead time of wind equipment in the UAE?

Turbines are built to order, so lead time is set by factory slots, blade and tower fabrication and shipping of oversized loads, while price follows turbine size, steel costs and the scope of the service agreement.

  • Turbine platform and rotor size: larger rotors for low-wind sites cost more per unit but can lower cost per MWh.
  • Logistics: blades and tower sections need special vessels, port handling at Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali, road permits and, for island sites, barges and marine landing.
  • Cranes: the availability of large crawler or mobile cranes in the region often sets the erection programme.
  • Service scope: full-scope service with availability guarantees costs more than basic maintenance but moves risk to the maker.
  • Spares: major components such as gearboxes and main bearings can take months to replace if not held in regional stock, so agree a critical spares list up front.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wind Energy

Are there wind farms in the UAE?
Yes. The UAE Wind Program launched by Masdar in October 2023 added 103.5 MW of wind capacity at Sir Bani Yas Island, Delma Island, Al Sila in Abu Dhabi and Al Halah in Fujairah. EWEC buys power from the three Abu Dhabi sites. The sites have low average wind speeds, with output strongest at night.
Which standard applies to wind turbine design in the UAE?
Wind turbine design for UAE projects follows the IEC 61400 series, mainly IEC 61400-1 (edition 4, 2019, with Amendment 1 of 2025) for turbine design and classes, and IEC 61400-2 for small turbines. Buyers should also ask for a type certificate from an IECRE-recognised certification body under the OD-501 scheme.
How does heat affect wind turbines in the UAE?
High heat makes wind turbines derate, cutting power to protect the generator and converter. A two-year study at Kuwait's Shagaya wind farm found annual high-temperature losses of about 1.2 percent, mostly at 40 to 44 C, which is comparable to UAE summers. Ask turbine makers for derating curves and hot-climate cooling options.
Does dust damage wind turbines in the Gulf?
Dust affects wind turbines in the Gulf in two ways: it clogs nacelle ventilation, so turbines derate earlier in hot weather, and airborne sand erodes blade leading edges. At Kuwait's Shagaya farm, dust losses rose from 0.31 to 1.45 percent per turbine between years one and two. Regular filter cleaning and leading-edge protection reduce the impact.
Who supplies wind turbines for UAE projects?
Wind turbines for UAE utility projects are bought from turbine manufacturers, usually under a supply and install contract with a long service agreement. For the 2023 UAE Wind Program, Goldwind was the main equipment supplier and PowerChina the EPC contractor. Smaller turbines, spares and services come through distributors and independent service providers.
What affects wind turbine lead times in the UAE?
Wind turbine lead times in the UAE depend on factory production slots, blade and tower fabrication, shipping of oversized loads to Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali, and the availability of large cranes for erection. Island sites add barge transport. Agree a critical spares list early, because major components can take months to replace.
