Traffic signs and signals in the UAE are the regulatory, warning and direction signs, overhead gantry signs, signal heads, controllers and electronic message signs that road authorities and developers install on public and private roads. This page lists UAE suppliers and explains how Dubai and Abu Dhabi manuals, retroreflective sheeting grades, sign structure and signal standards shape what you buy, plus what moves price and delivery.

Traffic signs and signals are the fixed and electronic devices that tell drivers and pedestrians what to do, what is ahead and where to go. In the UAE they form one product group within road construction products for UAE highways and streets, and they are bought by road authorities, master developers, contractors on new roads, and maintenance firms that replace damaged or faded signs.
The type of device sets the specification. A post-mounted warning sign is mostly about its sheeting and plate; an overhead gantry is a structural item; a signalised junction is an electrical and software system.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory and warning signs | Speed limits, stop and give way, hazard warnings on urban roads and highways | Layout and symbol to the authority's manual, sheeting type, aluminium plate thickness, post and fixing |
| Direction and guide signs | Junction approaches, exits, community and destination signs in Arabic and English | Bilingual legend layout, colour code (federal, emirate, tourist), sheeting class, panel size |
| Overhead gantries and cantilevers | Highway lanes, interchanges, toll and lane control points | Structural design for wind load, galvanising, foundation design, maintenance access, sign lighting |
| Traffic signal heads and controllers | Signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings | LED optical units, lens size, cabinet rating for heat, controller compatibility with the authority's central system |
| Variable and electronic message signs | Lane control, incident and travel time messages on highways | LED pixel pitch and brightness control, enclosure rating, communication protocol |
| Temporary work zone signs | Diversions, lane closures, road works | Portable frames and bases, fluorescent sheeting, compliance with the work zone manual |
Signs and signals rarely come alone on a road package. They sit beside thermoplastic road markings and studs that carry the same message on the pavement, and next to crash barriers that protect sign posts and gantry legs. Site signs inside factories and car parks are a different category: see workplace safety signs and site barriers.
Strong sun fades sign colours and ages sheeting, sand abrades sign faces, and summer heat stresses signal electronics inside closed cabinets. A UAE specification should therefore ask for proven sheeting durability, cabinet temperature ratings and a maintenance plan, not only a first-day appearance.
Retroreflective sheeting is the adhesive film that sends headlight beams back to the driver. Microprismatic sheeting returns more light than glass bead types and is normally specified for overhead and high-speed signs. Ask for the sheeting maker's product data bulletin, the ASTM D4956 type it claims, and the warranty conditions: makers tie warranties to their own inks, overlays and fabrication methods, so a sign printed with other inks may lose cover.
Aluminium sign plates do not rust, but posts, brackets and gantries are usually steel. Near the coast from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah, ask for hot-dip galvanising certificates, stainless or coated fixings, and isolation between aluminium and steel. Gantries carry large wind loads on wide panels and need design calculations checked by the road owner's engineer.
Controllers, detectors and LED message signs sit in sun all day. Ask for the rated ambient operating temperature, the enclosure ingress rating against dust, cabinet ventilation or cooling, and how LED brightness is controlled between midday glare and night. Most UAE authorities run central traffic control systems, so a controller has to work with the system the authority already operates.
As of 2026, UAE traffic devices follow the road owner's manual first: in Dubai the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Traffic Control Devices Manual, and in Abu Dhabi the Department of Municipalities and Transport manual on uniform traffic control devices (TR-511, second edition 2020). International product standards are then called up in project specifications.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or source |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic Control Devices Manual | Design, placement and installation of signs on Dubai roads, including supplementary information signs | RTA, Dubai |
| Abu Dhabi Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TR-511, 2nd edition, 2020) | Signs, signals and markings on Abu Dhabi roads | Department of Municipalities and Transport, Abu Dhabi |
| Authorisation to design, make and install supplementary information signs (2021 resolution) | Information signs on Dubai roads | Dubai Executive Council, administered by RTA |
| ASTM D4956, retroreflective sheeting for traffic control | Sheeting type named in specifications (for example Type IV, Type XI) | ASTM standard, declared by the sheeting maker |
| EN 12899-1 (adopted as GSO EN 12899-1:2024) | Fixed vertical signs: complete assemblies, sign faces, sheeting, supports and luminaires | CEN, adopted by the GCC Standardization Organization |
| EN 12368 | Traffic signal heads and optical units: visual, structural and environmental performance | CEN standard |
Dubai is strict about who may put signs on its roads. A February 2021 resolution reported by Khaleej Times requires supplementary information signs to follow the RTA's Traffic Control Devices Manual and allows only authorised entities licensed in Dubai to design, manufacture, install, repair and remove them, with Arabic taking at least half of the text space. If a developer or business is ordering signs, confirm the fabricator holds that authorisation before you place the order.
GSO EN 12899-1:2024 is worth reading for its scope: it covers sign assemblies, faces, sheeting and supports, but not gantries, cantilevers, variable message signs, temporary signs or foundations. Those items need their own structural design and product standards in the specification. Confirm the current edition of each manual with the RTA or the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre, since both are revised from time to time.
UAE signs are mostly made locally by sign fabricators that cut aluminium plate, apply imported sheeting and print or cut legends, while signals and message signs come from international equipment makers through system integrators. Sheeting itself is imported from a small number of film makers.
Before you award, ask each bidder for: the RTA or Abu Dhabi approval or authorisation they hold; the sheeting brand and type per sign, with the maker's data bulletin; plate thickness and post sizes; galvanising certificates for steel; gantry design calculations; for signals, the controller model and proof it works with the authority's central system. Street lighting poles often share foundations and cable routes with gantries, so coordinate with street and area lighting suppliers. Our guide to sourcing suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers wider checks, and you can post your traffic sign or signal requirement with the sign schedule to get comparable quotes.
Sheeting grade, sign area and structure drive sign cost; the number of approaches, detection and integration with the central system drive signal cost. Lead time is set by authority approval of the sign schedule, sheeting stock and gantry fabrication.
Ask bidders to price supply, fabrication and installation separately, and to quote lead time from approved drawings.
