Talc in the UAE is a soft, platy magnesium silicate mineral, ground to powder and sold for plastics compounds, paints, ceramics, rubber, paper and pharmaceutical or cosmetic uses. It is almost entirely imported. This page explains industrial grades, why an asbestos-free certificate matters, what to specify, which rules apply, and what moves price and delivery.

Talc is hydrated magnesium silicate, the softest common mineral, and industrial buyers order it as a milled powder whose particle size, whiteness and platy shape are controlled. It sits in the industrial minerals category for UAE buyers. In the United States, USGS reports talc going into plastics (32 per cent), ceramics (21 per cent), paint (18 per cent), paper (9 per cent), roofing (8 per cent) and rubber (6 per cent). UAE demand follows the same industries, although plastics, paints and building products dominate rather than paper.
| Grade | Typical UAE use | What the specification controls |
|---|---|---|
| Lamellar (platy) filler talc | Polypropylene compounds for automotive and appliance parts, stiffness and heat resistance | Median size, top cut, lamellarity, whiteness, moisture |
| High-whiteness talc | Trim parts, coloured plastics, premium coatings | Brightness, iron content, particle size |
| Paint and coating talc | Primers, solvent-based and industrial coatings | Oil absorption, size, residue on sieve |
| Ceramic talc | Tile, sanitary ware and technical ceramic bodies | MgO content, loss on ignition, iron, firing behaviour |
| Rubber and cable talc | Rubber compounds, cable insulation, dusting agents | Purity, size, moisture |
| Cosmetic or pharmaceutical talc | Powders, tablets, personal care | Purity, microbiology, asbestos-free certificate |
Talc competes with other white minerals. USGS lists calcium carbonate and kaolin as substitutes in paper, and bentonite, kaolin, mica and wollastonite as substitutes in plastics. For commodity filler duty compare calcium carbonate; for white extender and ceramic bodies see kaolin and clay. Compounders will also want plastic raw materials and paint makers industrial paints and coatings.
Talc and asbestos can occur in the same geological setting, so a talc lot must be shown to be free of asbestos. The US FDA states that talc may be found near asbestos in the earth, that mining sites should be chosen carefully and the ore tested thoroughly, and that it has tested talc-containing cosmetics using polarised light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In December 2024 FDA proposed a rule to standardise asbestos testing in talc cosmetics, then withdrew it on 28 November 2025 to consider public comments, so the testing method is still being debated.
The USGS talc summary also records bankruptcies and lawsuits tied to asbestos concerns in talcum powder, and a sale of a talc mining business in 2024. For a UAE industrial buyer, the practical step is simple: ask the supplier for an asbestos-free statement with the test method named, and for a certificate of analysis per lot. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical users should ask for more, including microbiology data, from the supplier.
The UAE has no significant talc mining, and supply is imported then stocked. Global talc production in the USGS 2025 table is spread across China, India, Finland, France, Korea, Brazil and others, and USGS notes Pakistan, Canada and China as the main sources of US imports. Trade-data summaries show UAE import records for talc and steatite under Harmonised System heading 2526, and a regional overview describes Saudi Arabia as the dominant GCC producer, with the UAE among the leading importers; treat those as commercial summaries and ask suppliers for origin.
That means UAE buyers deal with importers, distributors and stockists in Dubai, Sharjah and the northern emirates, who bring cargo through Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port and Fujairah. Origin matters because talc quality varies by deposit: the same median size from two origins can differ in whiteness, lamellarity and mineral impurities.
Talc is not damaged by heat, but it is a very fine, low-density powder that creates dust and picks up moisture. Hot, humid storage can cause caking in fine grades, and wet talc is hard to dose in an extruder. Fine dust is a respiratory nuisance, and extraction is required where bags are opened.
As of 2026 the UAE has no specific approval for raw industrial talc, so the controls come from import rules, the end product, and your customer. The MoIAT regulated products sheet, as opened for this page, lists paints and varnishes (Cabinet Resolution No. 6 of 2016) but does not name talc, so a paint maker carries the burden. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical talc falls under health-authority rules, which this page does not cover; confirm with the regulator.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Import documents with HS code (heading 2526 for natural talc and steatite) | Imported talc | UAE customs, DED trade licence |
| Paints and varnishes regulation | Paint makers using talc | MoIAT |
| Asbestos-free statement and test method | All talc grades; essential for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use | Supplier, buyer's quality system |
| Cosmetic or pharmaceutical talc rules | Personal care and drug manufacture | Health authorities |
| Certificate of analysis per lot | All industrial buyers | Buyer's approval procedure |

Choose by data and trial. Ask for a certificate of analysis for three recent lots, an asbestos-free statement with the method, the origin, and a sample to run on your line. For plastics, trial the sample at your loading level and measure stiffness, impact and surface finish; for paint, check oil absorption and settling.
A manufacturer or its authorised agent suits technical support and contract tonnage; a distributor gives access to several grades; a stockist suits small lots. List the grade and volume on the post your requirement page to compare quotes.
Grade and origin set price. High-whiteness and high-lamellarity grades cost more than basic ground talc, and cosmetic or pharmaceutical grades cost more again. Freight matters for a light, bulky powder because bag volume, not weight, can fill a container.
Common grades in UAE stock ship within days; specific lamellar or high-whiteness grades are often shipped to order.
