Structural steel fabrication in the UAE is the cutting, drilling, welding and coating of beams, plates and hollow sections into columns, trusses, platforms and pipe racks to an engineer's drawings. This page explains the work types, the welding and quality standards buyers ask for, how Gulf coastal conditions change the coating spec, and what moves price and delivery.
Metals are the strongest sector Sharjah has. Hamriyah Free Zone has been described by Oxford Business Group (2017) as having fabrication yards and engineering workshops, with one plant able to produce 25,000 tonnes of structural steel and 15,000 tonnes of pressure vessels a year, and the authority itself claims the largest cluster of steel fabricators in the Middle East, which is its own statement. The metals and fabrication sector here covers structural steel fabrication, pressure vessel fabrication, tank fabrication, stainless steel and hot dip galvanizing.
Heavy fabricators sit in Hamriyah Free Zone beside its deepwater port, which helps with plate and oversize assemblies. Sharjah Industrial Area holds smaller sheet metal, welding, machining and trading shops, with steel stockists in the sub-areas near Dubai. Al Sajaa is the newer address for firms that want larger plots. Many steel traders also buy through Jebel Ali and truck it in.
Ask for the fabricator's welding procedures, welder qualifications and inspection plan before you award a job, and match them to the code in your drawings. For pressure vessels and tanks, ask which code the shop works to and which third party inspects. For galvanizing and coating, ask about bath size, since long members will not fit every plant. For raw steel, ask for mill certificates with heat numbers and confirm that dimensions and grades match the order. If the steel is for building work, check municipality rules for structural products with the authority before ordering.
Coils, plate and pipe usually come by sea to Hamriyah, Khalid Port or Jebel Ali, then by road. Free zone fabricators deal with the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority, and mainland shops need a license from the Sharjah Economic Development Department that lists the metal activity. Fumes, noise and fire risk can draw Civil Defence and environmental review. Use post a requirement to ask several fabricators to price one drawing.
Sharjah's industry sits in three places. The first is the Sharjah Industrial Area inside the city, a run of numbered districts mostly along the Dubai border. Wikipedia lists 18 of them plus Al Sajaa, and describes workshops, warehouses, scrap yards, auto parts dealers, building materials firms, engineering contractors and the head office of a paint maker.
The second is Al Sajaa, further out near the airport and Al Hamriyah Port. A 2018 Gulf News report described the Al Sajaa Industrial Oasis, about 14 million square feet backed by Sharjah Asset Management Holding, as land for firms leaving the inner-city areas. It is not a free zone. Sajaa is also where the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) runs a gas and condensate processing complex with a hub for pipelines to the Northern Emirates.
The third is the free zones. Hamriyah Free Zone was set up in 1995, covers about 24 square kilometres according to Wikipedia, has its own deep-water port, and holds an LPG storage terminal with a marine berth. SAIF Zone, beside Sharjah International Airport, lists offices, purpose-built warehouses, plots from 2,500 square metres for custom factories or warehouses, and a jewellery manufacturing park. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, a free zone, sits in University City.
Sharjah has ports on two coasts. Gulftainer lists the Sharjah Container Terminal, the Khorfakkan Commercial Terminal on the east coast, the Sharjah Dry Port and the Sajaa Dry Port among the facilities it manages. Hamriyah's port is described as 14 metres deep. By road, the E311 and E611 connect to Dubai, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, and the E88 Al Dhaid Road runs across to Fujairah. Many buyers also clear cargo at Jebel Ali in Dubai, so ask your forwarder which gate suits your load.
The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) licenses businesses and has an industrial-area branch; its page says factories also need approval from Sharjah Municipality and the environmental authorities. Sharjah Municipality handles building permits, product approvals and food control. Sharjah Civil Defence approves plans, issues hazardous materials permits and compliance certificates, and ran a large inspection campaign in the industrial zones in the first half of 2025. The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) supplies power, water and piped natural gas. Companies inside a free zone deal with that zone's own authority first.
Building materials, paints, engineering workshops, auto parts and general trading dominate the inner industrial districts. Food processing has a foothold in Hamriyah, where a halal processed meat factory was reported in 2017. Gas, condensate and LPG handling drive oilfield and process-equipment demand at Sajaa and Hamriyah. Farming is small, centred on Al Dhaid. Sharjah is not a mining or heavy-steel city, so those buyers look to Abu Dhabi or the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
