Starches and hydrocolloids in the UAE are the native and modified starches and the gums, such as xanthan, guar, carrageenan, pectin, agar, alginate and gum acacia, that sauce, dairy, bakery, beverage and meat plants use to thicken, gel and stabilise products. This page explains how to pick one for your process, the GSO 2500, halal and GM points to check as of 2026, storage in UAE humidity, and what to ask suppliers.
Food security is a stated national priority, and Abu Dhabi has put real land behind it. KEZAD says the first phase of its food zone has more than 2.5 million sqm of land for food processing, with pre-built facilities, third-party testing laboratories and cold and cool storage offered by logistics firms in the zone. In May 2026 the Abu Dhabi Food Hub, an AD Ports Group platform for wholesale trade, logistics and distribution, announced a dedicated cold chain facility on a 37,000 sqm plot, with operational readiness targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. For buyers of food and beverage processing equipment, the pull is toward cold chain and distribution as well as production.
Cold storage rooms, industrial refrigeration systems and refrigerated trucks and containers are the leading lines, since heat makes the chilled chain a daily concern. Processors also buy packaging equipment, dairy processing equipment, baking equipment and food testing equipment. Poultry and dairy production already operate in the zones, and halal compliance shapes ingredient and slaughter equipment choices, so ask each supplier how it meets halal requirements.
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority sets food safety standards in the emirate and, according to KEZAD, runs training and certification programmes. Reports describe an online import and export system that handles food importer registration and product registration, though sources differ on the portal name, so confirm the current system with ADAFSA or your customs broker. A new plant should engage the Authority early and plan for hygiene design, material finishes and drainage that inspectors will check.
Suppliers of refrigeration, stainless steel work and packaging lines are mostly in Mussafah and ICAD, while the larger processors sit in KEZAD close to Khalifa Port. Ask for food-contact material certificates, spare parts stock in the UAE and a service plan that covers summer peak load. Compare cold rooms on insulation panel thickness, compressor redundancy and temperature logging. post a requirement with product type, throughput and chilled or frozen needs.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
