Specialty chemicals in the UAE are formulated products bought for what they do: water treatment programmes for cooling towers and desalination, oilfield drilling and production chemicals, concrete admixtures and other construction chemicals, and food-grade, mining, paper and textile chemicals. This page explains each type, how UAE heat and humidity affect them, which approvals apply as of 2026, and how to compare suppliers listed below.
This is the emirate where chemicals are made, not only traded. Ruwais, in the Al Dhafra region, is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex. A November 2024 report said TA'ZIZ had awarded Dh7.34 billion in engineering, procurement and construction contracts for site infrastructure at Al Ruwais Industrial City, with production on track to begin in 2027 and initial products that include caustic soda, ethylene dichloride, PVC, ammonia and methanol. Feedstock, utilities and a chemicals port are built into the plan. For buyers of chemicals, lubricants and industrial gases, that means long tender cycles at the big sites and steady maintenance buying around them.
At plant level, industrial gases such as nitrogen and oxygen support purging, welding and process use. Protective coatings and anti-corrosion coatings are bought heavily because coastal and process plants fight corrosion. Water treatment chemicals serve cooling towers and desalination, and industrial lubricants follow the rotating equipment. KEZAD also markets speciality chemicals with liquid storage, and polymers developed with ADNOC, so resins and polymers are a growing line for converters.
Mussafah and ICAD host blenders, coatings suppliers and gas cylinder distributors close to the island. KEZAD zones near Khalifa Port suit importers who need bonded storage and quick port access. Ruwais is about a long drive west, so ask whether a supplier delivers there and on what schedule. Hazardous goods carry special transport and storage conditions, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority is part of the approval picture for storage of flammables, so ask for safety data sheets and the licence status of the storage site.
Match purity and grade to the standard in your tender, such as food grade where a food plant is involved. Ask for batch certificates, a safety data sheet in English, and cylinder or drum return terms. Compare quotes on delivered price, not ex works. If you need several products at once, post a requirement and let suppliers quote the same specification.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
