Silica sand in the UAE is quartz sand, washed and graded for glass, foundry moulds, filtration, abrasive blasting, building products and oilfield use. The desert is full of sand, but UAE dune sand rarely meets industrial specifications, so most grades are processed or imported. This page explains grades, silica dust safety, sourcing, and what moves price and delivery.
For mining, quarrying and minerals it is a quarrying market, and one of the strongest in the UAE. The Hajar foothills supply limestone, dolomite and gabbro, and Saqr Port was reported in 2026 to ship about 85 million tonnes a year of bulk cargo, mainly aggregates, limestone, cement and clinker from local quarries. A state-owned operator has worked quarries in the emirate since 1978, and a 2018 Gulf News report counted 33 quarries and crushers in Ras Al Khaimah. In September 2026 MEED reported that the operator awarded contracts to design and make a sand and aggregates wash plant for a limestone quarry here. Metal ore mining is not a local business, so for ore equipment look to Oman or Saudi Arabia.
Quarries and crushers sit around Khor Khuwair, Al Ghail and the foothills, with ships loading at Saqr Port. Al Ghail Industrial Zone houses the Etihad Rail terminal planned to carry about 3.5 million tonnes a year of construction material to Abu Dhabi, reported in 2021. Equipment dealers, tyre and wear parts suppliers and workshops serve the quarries from the nearby industrial zones.
The core products are quarrying and mining equipment: stone crushers and screening plants, aggregate processing equipment, mobile crushing plants, rock breakers and hammers and drill rigs, plus mining safety equipment and PPE for dusty, hot sites.
Dust is the local flashpoint. In 2018 residents of Khor Khwair complained about air quality, and the Ras Al Khaimah Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA) and the federal Ministry of Environment and Water oversee compliance. Ask crusher suppliers for enclosure, dust suppression and noise data, and check wear part availability in the UAE. Plan for summer heat on hydraulics and cooling. Use post a requirement to compare quotes on one crusher or screen specification.
Most of the emirate's factories sit inside the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, known as RAKEZ, which was formed in 2017 by merging the former RAK Free Trade Zone and the RAK Investment Authority. RAKEZ runs three industrial zones. Al Ghail is the heavy-manufacturing zone with the largest plots and a connection to the Etihad Rail freight facility. Al Hamra suits light and high-tech manufacturing and processing, and RAKEZ lists tenants there from tea blending to glass bottles and wiring harnesses. Al Hulaila is positioned for heavy industry beside Saqr Port, with land plots and warehouses on offer. RAKEZ lets investors choose a free zone or a non-free-zone licence in these zones, which matters if you plan to sell to the UAE mainland.
Saqr Port is the heart of the freight system. RAK Ports describes it as one of the largest bulk ports in the region, and trade reports put its handling at around 70 to 85 million tonnes a year, mostly limestone, aggregates, cement and clinker from local quarries, with a container terminal alongside. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport takes air freight. By road, the airport operator's published figures give roughly 60 km from Sharjah, about 110 km from Dubai city and about 250 km from Abu Dhabi city, so same-day delivery to Dubai is realistic while Abu Dhabi is a longer run. Etihad Rail's Al Ghail freight facility was announced in 2021 to move quarry material by train towards Abu Dhabi, and RAKEZ now describes Al Ghail as connected to the rail terminal.
The RAK Department of Economic Development licenses commercial and industrial activity on the mainland, while RAKEZ licenses companies inside its zones. RAKEZ tells manufacturers to obtain external clearances after licensing, naming environmental, Civil Defence and health authorities. RAK Municipality handles building permits outside the free zones, and a completion certificate from Civil Defence is needed for industrial and multi-storey buildings. For RAKEZ sites, RAKEZ itself pre-approves open yards with Civil Defence. Confirm which regime applies to your plot before ordering.
Quarrying, cement and construction materials are the emirate's historic base, and manufacturing is reported at more than a third of local GDP in a RAKEZ article. Food processing, pharmaceuticals, packaging, building products and automotive components follow. Large hospitality projects on Al Marjan Island, including the Wynn resort scheduled for spring 2027, add steady demand for fit-out and facilities supplies. Heavy oil and gas is not a local strength; for that, look to Abu Dhabi.
