Sheet Piles Suppliers, UAE
Sheet piles in the UAE are interlocking steel sections driven into the ground to form retaining walls, cofferdams, basement shoring and quay walls, mostly on coastal and canal-side projects where groundwater is high. This page lists UAE sheet pile suppliers and explains Z, U and hat profiles, EN 10248 steel grades, how saline water eats steel, and the choice between buying, renting and buy-back.

What are sheet piles and which types are used in the UAE?
Sheet piles are rolled steel sections with interlocks on each edge, driven side by side to make a continuous wall that holds back soil and water. They are one product group within the UAE geotechnical and foundations category; this page goes into profiles, grades and corrosion, which the family overview only touches on.
In the UAE they appear wherever an excavation meets the water table: basements along Dubai Creek and the canal, pump stations and outfalls, marina walls, island and reclamation edges in Abu Dhabi, and temporary cofferdams for bridge piers.
| Profile | Typical UAE use | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Z-type (for example ArcelorMittal AZ) | Permanent quay and canal walls, deep basement shoring | Section modulus per metre, width (600 to 800 mm), grade, corrosion allowance |
| U-type (for example ArcelorMittal AU and PU) | Temporary cofferdams, trench and pit shoring, reusable rental stock | Section modulus, whether interlocks are crimped or welded, reduction factors in design |
| Hat-type (Nippon Steel 900 mm) | Retaining walls on tight urban sites, river and marine walls | NS-SP-10H to 50H section, one-direction driving, driving equipment |
| Combined walls (sheet piles with H or tube king piles) | High retained heights at quays and deep excavations | King pile size and spacing, intermediate sheet pile, connectors |
| Cold-formed sections | Light shoring and shallow cut-off walls | Thickness, interlock type, driveability |
Z sections keep their interlocks on the outer edges of the wall, which is one reason ArcelorMittal calls them the preferred choice for permanent work. U sections place the interlock on the neutral axis, so designers apply reduction factors unless the pairs are crimped or welded. Nippon Steel's hat-type piles avoid that reduction under Eurocode design because the interlock sits on the wall face.
Walls are installed with vibratory hammers, impact hammers and press-in machines, and deep walls are often tied back with ground anchors or walings. For the waterfront structures these walls form, see marine and coastal construction in the UAE.
How does UAE seawater and groundwater affect sheet piles?
Corrosion decides design life for UAE sheet piles more than strength does. Saline groundwater, the Arabian Gulf and warm temperatures all speed steel loss, so the wall needs a corrosion allowance, a coating, cathodic protection or a corrosion-resistant grade chosen at design stage.
Where steel loss is worst
EN 1993-5 gives typical steel thickness loss by exposure. For seawater, the splash and low water zone is the worst case: about 3.75 mm lost over 50 years, against 1.75 mm in permanent immersion and 0.6 mm in undisturbed natural soil, per ArcelorMittal's summary of the code tables. A Dubai quay wall therefore needs a far bigger allowance near low tide than at depth, and designers keep peak bending moments away from that zone where they can.
Protection options
- Sacrificial thickness: a heavier section or higher grade gives a structural reserve; ArcelorMittal notes this is often the most cost-effective route.
- Coatings: applied where loss would be highest, typically the splash and tidal faces. See marine coatings suppliers in the UAE.
- Cathodic protection: anodes or impressed current for surfaces permanently in water.
- Low-corrosion steel: AMLoCor, which ArcelorMittal says cuts thickness loss by a factor of 3 to 5 in the low water and permanent immersion zones; ASTM A690 is offered for the splash zone.
Heat and handling
Steel left in full sun gets too hot to handle safely, and coated piles must be lifted with soft slings and stored on timber to protect the coating. If piles will be hot-dip galvanised, ArcelorMittal asks for that to be stated at enquiry, because only steel of suitable chemistry galvanises correctly.
Which standards and approvals apply to sheet piles in the UAE?
Sheet piles in the UAE are bought to the European and American product standards the consultant names, and the wall design must sit inside the permit and soil report approval of the relevant authority. As of 2026 there is no UAE-specific product approval for sheet piles.
| Requirement | Applies to | Source or authority |
|---|---|---|
| EN 10248-1:2023 | Hot-rolled sheet pile grades S 240 GP to S 500 GP, Larssen interlocks | CEN, stated on mill certificates |
| ASTM A572 and ASTM A690 | American grades, with A690 aimed at marine splash zones | ASTM, available from mills on request |
| EN 1993-5 | Design of steel piling, including corrosion loss tables | CEN Eurocode, used by the designer |
| EN 12063 | Execution of sheet pile walls, including splicing and special piles | CEN, called up in the specification |
| Soil report and shoring approval | Excavations and permanent works | Dubai Municipality, Dubai Development Authority, Abu Dhabi and northern emirates authorities |
Ask the mill for certificates showing grade, heat number and section for every delivery, and check the grade marked on the piles against the certificate on arrival. Our guide to ECAS and EQM product conformity explains how to check whether an imported steel item is on a regulated UAE list.
Who supplies sheet piles in the UAE?
UAE buyers get sheet piles from mill agents who import new sections for permanent works, and from stockists and rental companies that hold used U and Z piles for temporary shoring. Most new hot-rolled piles are imported through Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port.
- Mills: ArcelorMittal AZ, AU and PU sheet piles are rolled at Belval in Luxembourg; Nippon Steel 900 mm hat-type sheet piles come in NS-SP-10H, 25H, 45H and 50H sections; and Nucor, through Nucor Skyline, supplies hot-rolled and cold-formed sheet piles, mainly in the Americas.
- Rental and buy-back: for cofferdams and basements, contractors often rent piles or buy with an agreed buy-back after extraction. Check straightness and interlock condition of used stock.
- Supply and install: shoring subcontractors combine piles, hammers and anchors and carry the design check.
Send bidders the wall design with section, grade, lengths and corrosion protection, or post your sheet pile requirement to collect offers. Our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers covers agency and trade licence checks.
What affects the price and lead time of sheet piles in the UAE?
Tonnage, section, grade and coating set the price of sheet piles; lead time depends on whether the section is in a UAE stockyard or must be rolled to order abroad.
- Section and length: uncommon sections and long piles are rolled to order and may need oversize transport.
- Grade: higher strength or special grades such as AMLoCor or A690 are usually produced on a rolling campaign.
- Protection: shop coating, galvanising and extra thickness add cost and time.
- Temporary or permanent: rental and buy-back cut cost on temporary walls, but extraction risk sits with the contractor.
- Freight: sea freight into Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port and crane time at site add to the landed cost.
