Shade net houses in the UAE are steel or pipe frames covered with knitted shade netting or insect-proof mesh, used to protect nurseries, date palm offshoots, landscaping stock and cooler-season vegetables from sun, wind and pests at a fraction of greenhouse cost. This page explains the main types, how to pick shade percentage and mesh for UAE conditions, the rules that touch a net house project, and what moves price and delivery.
It is smaller than the oil and construction trades, but it is a focused one. The emirate is mostly desert, so protected cultivation, efficient water use and animal husbandry matter more than open-field machinery. The agriculture and agri-equipment buyers here are greenhouse operators, date palm and vegetable farms in Al Ain and the Al Dhafra region, livestock and poultry units, and food security projects backed by government-linked investors. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority lists agricultural sustainability, animal wealth, bio-security and food security among its areas of work, and it operates a feed market that it describes as the first of its kind in the Middle East.
Climate control and water efficiency lead. Look first at greenhouse climate control, drip irrigation systems, fertigation systems and grow lights. Controlled environment farming is the headline story: KEZAD describes a 200 hectare AgTech Park in Al Ain for controlled environment farming and research, and a hatchery and poultry processing facility has been announced in KEZAD Area A, so poultry equipment and hatchery equipment are also worth a look. Large combine harvesters and ploughs have a thin market in this city.
Suppliers of pumps, pipe and greenhouse parts trade from Mussafah and the KEZAD zones, which are close to Khalifa Port. Farm buyers are spread out, so Al Ain and the Al Dhafra region are separate delivery runs from Abu Dhabi city. Confirm before you order whether the supplier installs on farm and whether service visits to Liwa or Al Ain are included.
Inputs such as seeds, pesticides and fertilizers sit under agriculture rules, and animals and feed are checked at the veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port, according to the Authority's site. Confirm the current permit route for your product with the Authority, not with a trade counter. Ask for water quality assumptions in any irrigation design, since groundwater in desert farms can be saline, and insist on spare parts availability in the UAE for climate control and pumps. Send a short specification, with crop, area and water source, through post a requirement to compare designs.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
