Ajman has one very large public utility asset. The Ajman Wastewater Treatment Plant in Al Jurf, delivered in 2009 under a 25 year concession by BESIX, has a capacity of 140,000 cubic metres a day, according to BESIX, and the operator is expanding it to meet growing water reuse demand. It also generates electricity from sludge and biogas. That plant, the dense apartment stock, and the industrial areas create demand across water and environmental services.
Building owners and developers buy sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, water tanks and filtration systems. Restaurants and food units in Ajman Free Zone need grease traps. Factories with washing or dyeing processes, such as the textile units in Industrial 2, look at effluent treatment, and sludge dewatering suppliers serve the utility and private plants. Metal workshops sell scrap to scrap metal recyclers.
Sewerage is run by Ajman Sewerage, and drinking water and power for industry come from Etihad Water and Electricity. The Ajman Municipality and Planning Department approves buildings and drainage connections, and Civil Defence reviews fire safety. Suppliers of pumps, tanks and treatment skids are found in Ajman Industrial 1 and 2 and the free zone, while larger membrane and desalination vendors serve Ajman from Dubai and Sharjah. Water-intensive industry is limited here, so projects are mostly small and medium plants.
For effluent or sewage plants, ask for the discharge standard the municipality or sewerage operator will apply, and for the vendor's list of plants running in the northern emirates. Request the guaranteed effluent quality in writing, plus spare parts and operator training terms. For tanks, check potable water material approvals. To compare designs, use post a requirement.
Ajman is the smallest emirate, and its industry is compressed into a few districts. Ajman Free Zone sits beside Ajman Port and was created in 1988. Oxford Business Group's 2025 Ajman report puts it at about 867,000 square metres with over 530 warehouses, 7,000 offices and 22 clusters, and counts roughly 9,000 companies. Sector counts in the same report include about 800 construction related traders, over 430 food and beverage firms, 361 in jewellery and 320 in textiles.
Outside the free zone, the Al Jurf industrial areas 1, 2 and 3 lie on the northern border with Umm Al Quwain, and Ajman Industrial 1 and 2 lie near the Sharjah border. The same report describes Industrial 1 as focused on electrical and mechanical repair and Industrial 2 on textiles and ready-to-wear clothing. Inland, Manama and Masfout are mainly farming settlements rather than factory districts.
Ajman Port handles around 1,000 ship calls a year and is a small gateway beside the free zone. Larger container volumes usually come through Sharjah and Dubai ports and arrive by road, because Sharjah surrounds Ajman on three sides. The Free Zone describes easy access to Dubai and Sharjah airports. The Oxford Business Group report mentions a planned deeper water port, so check current berth and draught limits with your forwarder before booking large lots.
Trade and industrial licences come from the Ajman Department of Economic Development. The Free Zones Authority of Ajman oversees Ajman Free Zone and Ajman Media City Free Zone. The Ajman Municipality and Planning Department handles building permits and runs a building material testing laboratory. Civil Defence sign-off appears in the completion process for non-residential buildings. Power and water are supplied by Etihad Water and Electricity. The Ajman Chamber, renamed in July 2024, represents commercial, industrial and agricultural firms.
Construction trades and building material traders are the largest group, followed by food and beverage, textiles, jewellery and automotive. Small workshops buy bearings, tools and spares, and the free zone's technology and robotics hub draws a smaller electronics demand. Oil and gas, mining and heavy process industry are thin in Ajman. Buyers with that need usually source from Abu Dhabi or Sharjah and use Ajman for trading, storage and light fabrication.
