Reactor Vessels Suppliers, UAE
Reactor vessels in the UAE are the pressure vessels in which chemical and refining reactions take place, from heavy-wall hydrotreater reactors to jacketed, agitated chemical reactors. This page explains the main types, hydrogen-service materials, ASME Section VIII and ICV rules as of 2026, and what drives price and delivery. Nuclear reactor vessels are a different class.

What are reactor vessels and which types do UAE plants buy?
A reactor vessel is a pressure vessel designed to hold a chemical reaction at controlled temperature and pressure, often with a catalyst bed or an agitator inside. In the UAE they are bought for refineries at Ruwais and Jebel Ali, gas and petrochemical plants in Ruwais and the industrial zones, and chemical blending sites in Sharjah and Jebel Ali, and the refinery group sits within refinery equipment in the UAE.
The type depends on the reaction. Refinery hydroprocessing reactors are tall, heavy-wall vessels filled with fixed catalyst beds and run at high temperature in hydrogen. Chemical reactors are often jacketed, stirred tanks that are smaller and are opened often for cleaning. For pharmaceutical use see the separate page on pharmaceutical reactors in the UAE; this page concentrates on industrial and refinery duty.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrotreater and hydrocracker reactor | Removing sulphur and upgrading fractions at a refinery | Cr-Mo steel, weld overlay, hydrogen service limits, catalyst bed internals |
| Catalytic reformer reactor | Turning naphtha into high-octane reformate | Alloy shell, refractory or alloy internals, radial or axial flow |
| Fixed bed process reactor | Gas processing, sulphur recovery, chemical synthesis | Catalyst loading and support, temperature measurement points |
| Agitated jacketed reactor | Resins, lubricant additives, specialty chemicals | Agitator and seal, jacket pressure, lining or alloy, cleaning access |
| Autoclave or high pressure reactor | Polymerisation and high pressure synthesis | Closure design, forged parts, relief arrangement |
| Glass-lined or alloy reactor | Corrosive acid or solvent service | Lining integrity, material of construction, thermal shock limits |
A reactor does not work alone. Feed is heated in heat exchangers for refineries, effluent goes to distillation columns, and catalyst comes from the licensor. Cracking units use large low-pressure vessels covered by catalytic cracking equipment. For general vessels, the companion page is pressure vessel fabrication in the UAE.
What materials and design rules apply to hydrogen-service reactors?
Hydroprocessing reactors use chromium-molybdenum steel, often with a stainless overlay on the inside, because hot hydrogen can damage ordinary carbon steel. The choice of grade, thickness and welding procedure is set by the licensor and the owner's materials specification, not by the fabricator alone.
- Cr-Mo steel: alloy steels containing chromium and molybdenum can be used in hot hydrogen service, according to Inspectioneering, where carbon steel can undergo chemical and metallurgical change at certain combinations of temperature and hydrogen partial pressure.
- Operating limits: the Nelson curves give operating limits for temperature and hydrogen partial pressure, and high temperature hydrogen attack is a known risk above about 204 C. API RP 941 is the document that engineers use, and the current edition should be confirmed with the owner.
- Overlay and cladding: ferritic and austenitic stainless steel overlay and cladding are described as effective against hydrogen attack, and also protect the shell from sour process fluid.
- Catalyst support and internals: the bed support grid, distribution trays and quench points decide how evenly the reaction runs, and they are installed and inspected through manways during turnarounds.
- Welding and heat treatment: thick Cr-Mo welds need qualified procedures, preheat and post weld heat treatment. Ask the fabricator for similar vessels already built.
How do UAE conditions affect reactor vessel selection?
Process temperature and pressure set the reactor design, while UAE heat, salt air and logistics affect supports, coatings, cooling and transport. Weight is often the hardest practical issue, because big reactors move by heavy-lift ship and special road or barge transport.
- Coastal corrosion: external steel and insulation at Ruwais or Jebel Ali face salt and humidity, so coating systems under insulation matter; see industrial protective coatings.
- Cooling of effluent: hot reactor effluent is cooled by air and water systems that lose capacity in summer.
- Heavy transport: reactors for hydroprocessing units can weigh hundreds of tonnes, so port, jetty, road and crane limits are studied early.
- Startup and shutdown: controlled heating and cooling rates are written into operating procedures to protect thick walls.
Which standards and approvals apply to reactor vessels in the UAE?
Reactor vessels in the UAE are designed to an ASME pressure vessel code in the project specification and bought from vendors approved by the owner. There is no separate UAE product certificate for a process reactor as of 2026; we checked this in October 2026.
| Requirement | Applies to | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 1 (2025 edition listed by ASME) | Vessels above 15 psig, with U, UM and UV certification marks | ASME |
| ASME Section VIII, Division 2 | Heavy-wall reactors designed by analysis, as called up in some specifications | ASME, owner or licensor |
| API RP 941 and the owner materials specification | Material choice for hydrogen service | API, owner and licensor |
| Owner approved vendor list | Who may fabricate and what inspection applies | ADNOC group companies and EPC contractors |
| ICV certificate | Tender scoring for local value | MoIAT |
ASME describes Division 1 as covering design, fabrication, inspection, testing and certification of pressure vessels, including rules for the U, UM and UV marks. MoIAT describes ICV as giving certified suppliers advantages in tender awards. Nozzle and flange details follow the rules in our guide to pipe fittings and flange standards.
Who supplies reactor vessels in the UAE?
Reactor vessels reach UAE buyers from international heavy fabricators for hydroprocessing and high pressure duty, and from regional fabricators for smaller process and agitated reactors. Heavy-wall Cr-Mo reactors are mostly imported, while shop-built chemical reactors can be made in the UAE.
These vessels are usually made to order against a licensor package, so buyers deal with the manufacturer or its Gulf representative and compare technical proposals. Shop work is witnessed by third-party inspection agencies, and welding procedures can be reviewed with welding services providers for site closure welds. To collect quotes, post your requirement with the data sheet.
A word on terminology: a nuclear reactor vessel is a separate product procured by the plant owner. WNN reported that the Barakah unit 3 reactor vessel measures 14.8 metres in height and 5.5 metres in diameter, weighs 533 tonnes and was made by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction in South Korea. That purchase has no connection with process reactors listed here.
What drives the price and lead time of reactor vessels in the UAE?
Weight, alloy and wall thickness set the price, with internals and catalyst as separate lines. ListGCC does not publish prices, which follow steel, alloy and freight markets.
- Forgings and plate: thick Cr-Mo plate and forged rings come from a small number of mills and can decide the schedule.
- Overlay and heat treatment: weld overlay, post weld heat treatment and NDE add time.
- Internals: bed supports, distributors and quench systems are proprietary and ordered from approved sources.
- Transport: heavy lift shipping and route work to the site can take months to plan.
- Approvals: drawings and calculations are reviewed by the licensor, EPC contractor and owner before release.
What should you compare when evaluating reactor vessel proposals in the UAE?
Compare the fabricator's record on vessels of the same material and thickness first, then the schedule and the scope split. A low price from a shop that has never welded thick Cr-Mo plate usually becomes a late delivery.
- Ask for a list of comparable reactors built, with year, thickness, material and the service they went into.
- Check the forging and plate sources, and whether they are on the owner's approved list.
- Confirm what the price includes: internals, overlay, heat treatment, painting, shipping, supervision at site and spare parts.
- Ask for the shop test and inspection plan, including hydrotest, NDE extent, overlay thickness checks and hold points.
- Check how the vessel will ship: as one piece, in shells or with internals installed, and what lifting gear the site needs.
In the UAE, a bid that includes local fabrication, site welding or service scope can score better on ICV, so ask suppliers to separate imported and local content in the offer.
