Proximity sensors in the UAE are the non-contact switches that detect metal parts, valve positions, gear teeth, cylinder end positions and material levels on machines, cranes, process plants and food lines. This page explains inductive, capacitive, magnetic and NAMUR types, how metal type, heat and washdown change the real sensing range, which standards and ECAS-Ex rules apply as of 2026, and what drives price and lead time, followed by UAE suppliers.
Not mainly. The sector in Sharjah is better described as a trade and installation market for electronics and industrial automation than as an electronics-making cluster. The Sharjah Industrial Area and the free zones hold wholesalers, contractors and panel shops that serve factories, warehouses, residential blocks and shops across the northern emirates. For fabrication-scale electronics, buyers look more to Dubai or to overseas makers.
Security and building systems sell steadily: CCTV and IP cameras, access control and UPS systems for offices, schools and warehouses. Factories and workshops buy PLCs, sensors and switches, power supplies and industrial networking gear for packaging lines, pumps and mixers. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, a free zone set up in 2016, lists a prototyping centre and focuses on research and digital work, which adds a small demand for development kits and test equipment. The park's own pages do not list tenants, so check its directory directly.
Component and automation dealers trade from the industrial districts and from showrooms near Dubai, and many serve both emirates from one counter. Many of the items are regulated for safety: electrical equipment must meet UAE conformity rules, and fire alarm and detection systems fall under Sharjah Civil Defence. Ask for datasheets, a conformity declaration and the warranty terms in writing. For a control panel, state the voltage, enclosure rating and the standard to which it should be built.
Small parts arrive by air through Sharjah International Airport or Dubai and clear quickly, while panels, racks and larger systems arrive by sea through Sharjah, Khorfakkan or Jebel Ali. Ask whether an item is in a local warehouse, and for the lead time if it is not. Where a product has to match an existing line, send the exact part number. Post a requirement with part numbers and quantities to compare dealers on the same list.
Sharjah's industry sits in three places. The first is the Sharjah Industrial Area inside the city, a run of numbered districts mostly along the Dubai border. Wikipedia lists 18 of them plus Al Sajaa, and describes workshops, warehouses, scrap yards, auto parts dealers, building materials firms, engineering contractors and the head office of a paint maker.
The second is Al Sajaa, further out near the airport and Al Hamriyah Port. A 2018 Gulf News report described the Al Sajaa Industrial Oasis, about 14 million square feet backed by Sharjah Asset Management Holding, as land for firms leaving the inner-city areas. It is not a free zone. Sajaa is also where the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) runs a gas and condensate processing complex with a hub for pipelines to the Northern Emirates.
The third is the free zones. Hamriyah Free Zone was set up in 1995, covers about 24 square kilometres according to Wikipedia, has its own deep-water port, and holds an LPG storage terminal with a marine berth. SAIF Zone, beside Sharjah International Airport, lists offices, purpose-built warehouses, plots from 2,500 square metres for custom factories or warehouses, and a jewellery manufacturing park. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, a free zone, sits in University City.
Sharjah has ports on two coasts. Gulftainer lists the Sharjah Container Terminal, the Khorfakkan Commercial Terminal on the east coast, the Sharjah Dry Port and the Sajaa Dry Port among the facilities it manages. Hamriyah's port is described as 14 metres deep. By road, the E311 and E611 connect to Dubai, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, and the E88 Al Dhaid Road runs across to Fujairah. Many buyers also clear cargo at Jebel Ali in Dubai, so ask your forwarder which gate suits your load.
The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) licenses businesses and has an industrial-area branch; its page says factories also need approval from Sharjah Municipality and the environmental authorities. Sharjah Municipality handles building permits, product approvals and food control. Sharjah Civil Defence approves plans, issues hazardous materials permits and compliance certificates, and ran a large inspection campaign in the industrial zones in the first half of 2025. The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) supplies power, water and piped natural gas. Companies inside a free zone deal with that zone's own authority first.
Building materials, paints, engineering workshops, auto parts and general trading dominate the inner industrial districts. Food processing has a foothold in Hamriyah, where a halal processed meat factory was reported in 2017. Gas, condensate and LPG handling drive oilfield and process-equipment demand at Sajaa and Hamriyah. Farming is small, centred on Al Dhaid. Sharjah is not a mining or heavy-steel city, so those buyers look to Abu Dhabi or the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
