Oilfield chemicals in the UAE are the corrosion and scale inhibitors, H2S scavengers, demulsifiers, biocides and drilling fluid additives used on ADNOC and other producing fields. This page lists UAE suppliers and explains each product family, how chemicals are qualified through lab screening, compatibility tests and field trials, how heat affects storage, and what drives price and lead time.

Oilfield chemicals are the treatment products dosed into wells, flowlines, separators and drilling fluids to keep hydrocarbons flowing and steel intact: corrosion and scale inhibitors, H2S scavengers, demulsifiers, biocides and drilling fluid additives. In the UAE they are bought for ADNOC onshore and offshore concessions in Abu Dhabi and for smaller producing fields in Sharjah and Dubai. They sit within specialty chemicals supplied in the UAE, alongside the water treatment chemicals used for cooling towers and desalination, which share some chemistries but not the qualification route.
Most purchases are not one-off drum sales. A chemical programme normally covers the product, the injection equipment, monitoring and a service technician who adjusts dose rates. The table sets out the main product families and what a UAE buyer should specify for each.
| Product family | What it does | Where it is dosed | What to specify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion inhibitors | Form a film on carbon steel to slow CO2 and H2S corrosion | Wellheads, flowlines, export pipelines, continuous or batch | Water cut, CO2 and H2S partial pressure, flow regime, target corrosion rate, oil or water soluble |
| Scale inhibitors | Stop carbonate and sulfate scale forming as pressure and temperature change | Downhole by squeeze or capillary string, topsides, water injection | Full brine analysis, maximum temperature, minimum inhibitor concentration, mixing with injection water |
| H2S scavengers | React with hydrogen sulfide in gas or liquid streams | Contact towers, direct injection into gas or crude lines | H2S load, outlet specification, spent product handling, solids risk |
| Demulsifiers | Break water in oil emulsions so separators and dehydrators meet crude specification | Upstream of separators and desalters | Crude type, water cut, separator residence time and temperature, basic sediment and water target |
| Biocides | Control sulfate reducing and other bacteria that sour reservoirs and pit steel | Water injection, produced water, hydrotest water, pipeline pigging | Bacteria counts by test method, contact time, compatibility with oxygen scavengers and inhibitors |
| Drilling fluid additives | Weighting, viscosity, fluid loss control and shale inhibition in mud | Mud systems on land and offshore rigs | Product grade to ISO 13500 or API 13A, mud type, bottomhole temperature |
Drilling fluid products are usually bought through the mud contractor rather than the production chemistry team, so they have their own listing under drilling fluids and mud chemicals in the UAE. Service-led chemical programmes, where the supplier also runs the treatment on site, appear under oilfield chemical services for UAE operators.
A chemical is qualified for a UAE field by passing laboratory screening on that field's own fluids, then compatibility tests, then a monitored field trial. ADNOC group companies run their own supplier registration and prequalification, and each operating company sets its own technical acceptance, so confirm the route with the asset's chemistry or corrosion team before quoting.
Screening ranks candidate products under conditions close to the well. Published qualification work shows the typical tools: rotating cage autoclave tests for corrosion inhibitors and minimum inhibitor concentration tests for scale inhibitors, with a field trial sanctioned only after the lab results are judged transferable (JPT, foamer and inhibitor package). Ask suppliers which tests they ran, at what temperature and with which brine, and ask for the raw data, not only a pass statement.
Compatibility is where many programmes fail. A product has to stay stable with produced brine and with every other chemical injected into the same stream. One North Sea scale programme tested brine compatibility across the full concentration range, from drum strength down to the diluted dose, and dropped a candidate that failed with a high calcium brine before performance testing even started (JPT, carbonate scale inhibition). For UAE fields, cover corrosion inhibitor and scale inhibitor in the same line, biocide with oxygen scavenger in injection water, and demulsifier with corrosion inhibitor carryover at the separator.
The trial sets the dose that will appear in the contract. Agree the baseline first: coupon or probe corrosion rates, iron counts, scale ion analysis or oil in water, measured before injection starts. Then agree the trial length, who owns the monitoring and what result counts as a pass.
Heat changes oilfield chemicals before they reach the well, so storage and injection design matter as much as the formulation. Drums and IBCs left in direct sun on Abu Dhabi well pads or offshore deck space can run far hotter than the product data sheet's storage range, and solvent-based inhibitors can lose volatile fractions or separate.
There is no single UAE product standard for production chemicals; acceptance comes from the operator's specification, recognised test methods and the drilling fluid material standards. Import, labelling and hazard communication rules for chemicals are covered on the UAE chemicals, lubricants and industrial gases hub. As of 2026:
| Requirement | Applies to | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier registration and prequalification | Any company selling to ADNOC group companies | ADNOC group procurement |
| Technical acceptance and field trial | Each product on each asset | Operator chemistry and corrosion engineers |
| ISO 13500 / API Spec 13A | Barite, haematite, bentonite, attapulgite, sepiolite, starch, xanthan gum, CMC and PAC grades for drilling fluids | ISO and API |
| Laboratory corrosion and scale test methods | Corrosion and scale inhibitor screening | AMPP (formerly NACE) and ASTM methods named in the operator specification |
| ISO 9001 quality system | Manufacturers and local blenders | Accredited certification bodies |
ISO 13500 sets physical properties and test procedures for named drilling fluid materials and is written for their manufacturers (ISO 13500 record, Standards Council of Canada). Ask for a certificate of analysis per batch against the grade ordered. Abu Dhabi tenders may also score In-Country Value; check the current tender documents for how it is weighted.
UAE oilfield chemicals come from three kinds of supplier: international chemical service companies with local blending, regional formulators, and distributors of commodity raw materials. Which you need depends on whether you are buying a qualified product with service or a raw material your own team will blend.
Production chemicals are usually specified together with the equipment they protect, so the same teams buying artificial lift and production equipment in the UAE and oilfield services for UAE fields tend to set the chemical scope. For the wider picture of UAE exploration and production buying, see upstream oil and gas in the UAE. Related speciality ranges include construction chemicals for grouting and repair and mining chemicals for flotation and processing. To get quotes from UAE suppliers, post your requirement with the field, fluid analysis and dose estimate.
Price is driven by active content and dose rate more than by the price per litre, so compare cost per barrel treated or per million standard cubic feet, not drum prices. A cheap product at twice the dose costs more.
