What is non-destructive testing and which methods do UAE projects specify?

Non-destructive testing (NDT) finds cracks, lack of fusion, porosity, corrosion and wall loss in a component while leaving it fit for service. In the UAE it is a core part of the inspection and testing services used by UAE industry, bought by fabricators, EPC contractors, ADNOC group operators, utilities and shipyards for new construction and for in-service inspection.

The construction code or the owner's inspection and test plan decides which method and how much of each weld is examined. The table sets out the main methods and where they fit.

MethodTypical use in the UAEKey specification points
Ultrasonic testing (UT), including PAUT and TOFDButt welds on pipelines, vessels and structural steel; thickness and corrosion mapping on plant pipingTechnique (manual UT, phased array, time of flight diffraction), calibration blocks, scan plan, acceptance code, data storage format
Radiographic testing (RT)Pipe and vessel welds where the code calls for radiography, castings, valve bodiesSource type (X-ray or gamma), film or digital, image quality indicators, exclusion zone and shooting times
Magnetic particle testing (MT)Surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic welds, forgings, lifting gearYoke or prod, wet or dry particles, fluorescent or visible, field strength checks
Dye penetrant testing (PT)Surface-breaking defects in stainless, duplex, aluminium and non-magnetic partsPenetrant type and sensitivity, dwell time, surface temperature range of the procedure
Eddy current testing (ECT)Heat exchanger and condenser tubes in power, desalination and cooling plants; coating thickness; crack detection on painted surfacesProbe type, tube material and size, calibration standard, reporting of tube plugging lists

PAUT (phased array) uses a probe with many elements steered electronically and records the scan, while TOFD measures diffracted signals from flaw tips and is used for sizing. Both are often specified where radiography is impractical on a busy site. Whether ultrasonic examination can replace radiography for acceptance depends on the construction code and any approved code case, so confirm it with the owner's engineer before planning on it. NDT work sits close to other inspection services: third-party inspection witnesses and reviews the results, coating inspection follows the same steelwork after NDT, and rope access inspection brings UT and visual checks to tanks, stacks and offshore structures.

How does UAE heat and dust affect NDT on site?

UAE site conditions affect NDT mainly through surface temperature, which limits penetrant and ultrasonic procedures, and through the need to clear areas for radiography, which pushes gamma work to nights and weekends. Plan the method and the timing together.

Hot surfaces

Steel left in the sun on a UAE laydown yard or a pipe rack gets much hotter than the air. Penetrant procedures are qualified for a surface temperature range, and outside it the procedure must be qualified for the higher temperature. Ultrasonic couplant can dry and standard probe wedges can be affected on hot surfaces, so high-temperature couplants and wedges are used for in-service inspection of hot lines. Ask the provider to state the temperature range of each procedure in writing.

Radiography on live sites

Gamma radiography needs a controlled exclusion zone. On crowded construction sites and operating plants in Ruwais, Jebel Ali or KIZAD, that usually means shooting at night or at shift change, which adds cost and slows turnaround. This is one reason UAE contractors adopt PAUT and TOFD where the code allows it.

Dust, humidity and storage

Windblown sand contaminates magnetic particle inks and penetrant surfaces, so cleaning before testing matters more than in cooler climates. Coastal humidity condenses on cold pipework in the morning. Film and digital plates should be stored and processed under the conditions the procedure specifies.

Which standards and approvals apply to NDT in the UAE?

As of 2026, UAE NDT is controlled by three layers: certification of the technicians (ISO 9712 or ASNT-based schemes), the technique and acceptance standards called up by the construction code, and FANR licensing for any work with radiation sources. The table summarises what to check.

ISO 9712:2021 personnel certification, Levels 1, 2 and 3Third-party certification of NDT technicians across ten methods including UT, RT, MT, PT, ET and visual testingISO, via accredited certification bodies

ISO 9712 versus ASNT certification

ISO 9712:2021, published in December 2021 to replace the 2012 edition, is a central certification scheme: an independent body examines and certifies the technician. ASNT's SNT-TC-1A is different. ASNT's June 2026 advisory states that SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice for employers, that training institutes cannot independently issue certifications under it, and that ASNT's name or logo must not appear on such certificates. On UAE projects, read the specification: ADNOC and European-code jobs often ask for ISO 9712 or an equivalent central scheme, while US-code work accepts an employer's SNT-TC-1A written practice. Ask for the certificate and the written practice behind it, and check that Level 2 technicians interpret results and a Level 3 approves the procedures.

FANR licensing for radiography

FANR licenses regulated activities with radiation sources, registers sources and issues import and export permits. Its regulatory guide list includes FANR-RG-019, Radiation Safety in Industrial Radiography, alongside FANR-REG-24 on basic safety standards. Before radiography starts, ask the NDT company for its current FANR licence covering the source type and site work, the name of its radiation protection officer, the source certificate and the emergency plan. Free zones and site owners may ask for their own no-objection paperwork on top.

Accreditation of the provider

Many owners also ask for the NDT company's inspection or laboratory accreditation and for ISO 9001 certification. The certification and compliance category covers those schemes in more detail.

How do you choose an NDT provider in the UAE?

Choose a UAE NDT provider on the people and procedures it can put on your job: certified technicians for each method at the right level, written procedures accepted by your client, calibrated equipment and, for radiography, a current FANR licence. Price comes after those checks.

  • Named technicians with ISO 9712 or employer certificates per method, plus any ADNOC or client approvals the contract requires.
  • Procedures and techniques approved by the owner's Level 3 or inspection engineer before work starts.
  • Equipment calibration records, reference blocks and, for PAUT and TOFD, the software and data format the client can review.
  • Reporting turnaround and how repairs are flagged to the welding team the same day.
  • For radiography, the FANR licence, radiation protection officer and exclusion zone plan.

NDT is often bought with related work. Pressure testing services follow NDT on piping systems, drone inspection screens tall structures before rope access or scaffold-based NDT, and certified welders come from welding service companies whose repair rates the NDT reports drive. Technicians on rate for shutdowns can also be sourced through technical manpower suppliers. To compare offers, post your NDT requirement with methods, weld counts, site location and the acceptance code.

What drives the price and turnaround of NDT in the UAE?

NDT pricing in the UAE depends on the method, the volume and access, the site restrictions, and the reporting the specification asks for. Providers quote per joint, per film, per metre of scan, per shift or per day, so normalise offers before comparing them.

  • Method: PAUT and TOFD need more expensive equipment and Level 2 analysts, but can test more welds per shift than radiography on a busy site.
  • Access: scaffolding, rope access, confined spaces and offshore work add time and crew.
  • Site rules: night shooting, permit-to-work delays and exclusion zones for radiography.
  • Reporting: digital data packages, encoded scans and client-specific report formats.
  • Mobilisation: remote sites in Al Dhafra, offshore platforms and short notice call-outs.

Turnaround is set by technician availability and the time needed to process and interpret results. During major shutdowns, demand for certified Level 2 technicians peaks across many plants at once, so book crews and equipment early.

Frequently Asked Questions — Non-Destructive Testing

Does industrial radiography need a FANR licence in the UAE?
Yes. FANR licenses regulated activities with radiation sources in the UAE, registers sources and issues import and export permits. Industrial radiography companies should hold a current FANR licence for the source type and site work, follow FANR-REG-24 and the FANR-RG-019 guide, and name a radiation protection officer before shooting.
What is the difference between ISO 9712 and ASNT SNT-TC-1A for NDT technicians?
ISO 9712:2021 is a central scheme where an independent body certifies NDT technicians at Levels 1 to 3. ASNT SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice that each employer follows to certify its own staff under a written practice. UAE project specifications state which one they accept, so check before mobilising technicians.
Can phased array UT replace radiography on UAE projects?
Phased array UT and TOFD can replace radiography only where the construction code, an approved code case or the owner's specification allows it. Many UAE contractors prefer them on busy sites because they avoid radiation exclusion zones, but the switch must be agreed with the owner's engineer before work starts.
Which NDT method suits heat exchanger tubes in UAE plants?
Eddy current testing is the usual method for non-ferromagnetic heat exchanger and condenser tubes in UAE power, desalination and cooling plants. The probe is pushed through each tube and wall loss or cracking is recorded. Ferromagnetic tubes may need other electromagnetic or ultrasonic techniques, so state tube material and size in the enquiry.
How does UAE summer heat affect dye penetrant and ultrasonic testing?
Dye penetrant procedures are qualified for a surface temperature range, and steel in the UAE sun can exceed it, so work moves to cooler hours or uses a procedure qualified for higher temperature. Ultrasonic testing on hot surfaces needs high-temperature couplant and wedges. Ask the NDT provider to state procedure limits.
What documents should a UAE NDT company provide with its offer?
A UAE NDT offer should come with technician certificates per method and level, the written practice or certification body, method procedures, equipment calibration records, sample reports and, for radiography, the FANR licence and radiation protection officer details. Owners may also ask for accreditation and ISO 9001 certificates.
How are NDT services priced in the UAE?
UAE NDT providers price per joint, per film, per metre scanned, per shift or per day, depending on the method. Access, night radiography, offshore or remote mobilisation, reporting format and short notice call-outs all add cost. Compare offers on the same weld counts and acceptance code.
