What are network racks and enclosures, and which types are used in the UAE?

A network rack is a 19-inch mounting frame for IT and telecom equipment; an enclosure or cabinet adds doors, side panels, locks and airflow control around that frame. They are the passive backbone of the ICT hardware family in the UAE, found in every comms room, data hall, CCTV control room and telecom shelter from Dubai Marina towers to Abu Dhabi utility substations.

The width between mounting rails is set by the 19-inch format, and height is counted in rack units (U) of 44.45 mm, so a 42U cabinet offers 42 slots of usable mounting height. Racks are commonly built to EIA-310-E for rail spacing and hole pattern; Vertiv, for example, lists EIA 310E against its VR Rack.

TypeTypical UAE useWhat to specify
Server cabinets (usually 600 mm wide, 1000 to 1200 mm deep)Data halls and server rooms holding deep rack servers and storageHeight in U, depth for the deepest server plus cables, static and rolling load, perforated doors, PDU mounting
Network cabinets (often 800 mm wide)Core and distribution switching, patching with high cable countsSide cable management, vertical managers, cable entry top and bottom, brush strips
Colocation cabinetsShared racks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi colocation hallsSplit compartments, separate locks or combination locks, separate power per tenant
Two-post and four-post open framesPatching in comms rooms, telecom rooms with controlled accessLoad, rail adjustability, earthing kit, floor anchoring
Wall-mount cabinets (6U to around 18U)Floor distributors in offices, villas, retail units, CCTV recordersDepth, swing-out frame for rear access, fan, wall load
Outdoor cabinetsCCTV poles, street telecom, utility and oil field sitesIP rating, sun shield, insulation, heat exchanger or air conditioner, corrosion protection
Aisle containmentHot or cold aisle enclosures around rows of cabinetsDoors, roof panels, fire detection and suppression integration

The rack is chosen around what goes in it: enterprise servers and storage arrays set depth and load, structured cabling sets cable management and width, and UPS units and PDUs set power capacity at the back. Cables reach the rack on cable trays and ladders above or below. Recorders and switches for CCTV systems often go in wall-mount or outdoor cabinets close to the cameras.

How do you size a rack for load, depth and airflow?

Size a cabinet by the heaviest and deepest equipment it will ever hold, then check that it can move enough cool air through the front and hot air out of the back. Undersized depth and load are the two mistakes that cannot be fixed after delivery.

  • Load ratings. Makers quote a static rating (standing on its feet or levellers) and a lower dynamic or rolling rating (moved on castors with equipment inside). Vertiv lists 3,000 lb (1,360 kg) static for its VR3100, and a review of Eaton's RS server enclosure lists 1,361 kg static and 907 kg dynamic. Since the UL 2416 revision effective December 2022, each shelf, cabinet, rack and enclosure must have its maximum load marked or stated in the installation instructions.
  • Depth. Add rear cable and PDU space to the server depth. Schneider Electric positions the 600 mm wide, 1,070 mm deep NetShelter SX AR3100 for low to medium density server and networking use; deeper servers and dense cabling need 1,200 mm.
  • Airflow. Servers draw air front to back, so specify perforated front and rear doors, blanking panels in every empty U and sealed gaps between rails and side panels. Without them hot exhaust recirculates and inlet temperatures rise above the 18 to 27 °C range ASHRAE recommends.
  • Power. Count PDU outlets and kilowatts per rack. Dense GPU servers can exceed what a standard cabinet and room cooling can handle.
  • Earthing. Bond every rack to the telecom earthing system and confirm the rack's earthing points and marking, which UL 2416 also addresses.

How do UAE heat, dust and coastal air affect racks and enclosures?

Indoor racks in cooled rooms are mostly affected by airflow inside the cabinet; outdoor cabinets in the UAE face direct sun, fine dust and, near the coast, salt-laden humidity. A sealed metal box in summer sun heats far above air temperature, so outdoor enclosures need a thermal design, not just an IP rating.

  • Solar gain. Use double-skin or sun-shielded outdoor cabinets in light colours and ask the supplier for a heat load calculation with the actual equipment watts, then size the heat exchanger or air conditioner from it.
  • Dust. Sealed cabinets with closed-loop cooling keep sand out better than filtered fans; if fans are used, filters need regular cleaning on sites in Mussafah, Jebel Ali and inland Al Ain.
  • Corrosion. On Dubai and Abu Dhabi waterfronts, ports and islands, specify powder-coated galvanised or stainless steel, stainless hinges and fixings, and sealed cable glands.
  • Indoor dust. Brush strips at cable entries and sealed floor openings stop dust and conditioned air loss in raised-floor rooms.

Which standards and approvals apply to racks in the UAE?

Passive racks and cabinets have no single UAE product approval as of 2026; buyers specify them by international standards, while the electrical parts fitted to them, such as PDUs, fans and cooling units, fall under UAE RoHS.

Standard or ruleApplies toWho sets it
EIA-310-E19-inch rack rail spacing, hole pattern and rack unitEIA/ECA, named by the designer
UL 2416Safety of cabinet, enclosure and rack systems for audio/video and ICT equipment, including load marking and earthingUL; tested by labs such as Intertek
IP code (IEC 60529)Dust and water protection of outdoor and industrial enclosuresIEC, named by the designer
UAE RoHS (Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2017)Electrical parts: PDUs, fan trays, monitoring units, enclosure air conditionersMoIAT
ANSI/TIA-942Data centre layout, where the owner names itTIA

Confirm with the consultant which standards the project specification names, and for powered cabinets ask the supplier for the RoHS certificates; the ECAS and EQM conformity guide shows how to check them.

Who supplies network racks and enclosures in the UAE?

UAE buyers get racks from makers' regional offices, IT and electrical distributors, and local fabricators who build to drawings. Data centre and branded IT racks usually come through distributors; outdoor and custom cabinets are often fabricated or assembled locally.

Brands listed on ListGCC that make IT racks include Schneider Electric (APC) with NetShelter cabinets, Vertiv with the VR Rack, Eaton with RS server, network and colocation enclosures, and Legrand, whose Minkels range covers server, network, colocation, high-density cabling and OCP cabinets. These makers also sell PDUs, containment and cooling, which simplifies one-vendor rows.

  • Stock or build. Common 42U server and network cabinets are often in UAE stock; colours, special depths, outdoor cabinets and containment are made to order.
  • Delivery route. Check door and lift sizes; Schneider points out that its 42U NetShelter SX is sized to roll through standard doorways, and taller 48U cabinets may not.
  • Accessories. Fix shelves, cable managers, blanking panels, castors and locks in the quote to avoid a second order.

Use the guide to sourcing industrial suppliers for vendor checks, or post your requirement with rack count, U height, width, depth and load.

What drives the price and lead time of racks in the UAE?

Size, load rating, steel gauge and accessories set most of the price; outdoor thermal design and containment add the most. Standard black 42U cabinets ship from stock, while outdoor, custom-depth and containment orders are built to order.

  • Construction. Higher load ratings and welded frames cost more than flat-pack designs.
  • Cooling. Air conditioners and heat exchangers can cost more than the outdoor cabinet itself.
  • Security. Combination or electronic locks and split colocation compartments add cost.
  • Freight. Racks are bulky; flat-pack shipping lowers freight cost into Jebel Ali but adds assembly time on site.

Frequently Asked Questions — Network Racks & Enclosures

What size server rack is standard in the UAE?
The most common server rack in UAE data centres and server rooms is a 42U, 19-inch cabinet, 600 mm wide and 1,000 to 1,200 mm deep. Network cabinets are often 800 mm wide for cable management. Each rack unit is 44.45 mm, so confirm the total height fits doors and lifts.
What is the difference between static and dynamic rack load?
Static load is what a rack can carry standing still on its feet or levellers; dynamic or rolling load is what it can carry while moved on castors. Dynamic ratings are lower. UAE buyers should check both, because racks are often pre-loaded and rolled into position in data halls.
Do network racks need approval in the UAE?
A passive steel rack has no specific UAE product approval as of 2026; it is specified to standards such as EIA-310-E and UL 2416. Electrical parts fitted to it, such as PDUs, fans and cabinet air conditioners, fall under UAE RoHS administered by MoIAT. Confirm with the project consultant.
How do I keep an outdoor cabinet cool in the UAE?
An outdoor cabinet in UAE sun needs a sun shield or double skin, a light colour, and active cooling sized from a heat load calculation using the real equipment watts. Closed-loop heat exchangers or cabinet air conditioners keep dust out better than filtered fans. Specify corrosion protection near the coast.
Why do racks need blanking panels?
Blanking panels close empty rack units so hot exhaust air from the back of servers cannot loop round to the front intakes. Without them, inlet temperatures rise above the 18 to 27 °C range ASHRAE recommends, which in UAE server rooms wastes cooling and can trigger equipment alarms.
Which brands make server racks sold in the UAE?
Server and network racks sold in the UAE include Schneider Electric APC NetShelter cabinets, Vertiv VR Racks, Eaton RS enclosures and Legrand Minkels cabinets, along with locally fabricated cabinets. Compare load ratings, depth options, accessories and local stock rather than brand alone.
