Laboratory equipment in the UAE covers the instruments, furniture, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves and consumables used by hospital, research, university and quality control laboratories. This page sets out the main types and what to specify, how UAE heat, dust and humidity affect them, which standards and approvals apply as of 2026, and how to compare the manufacturers and distributors listed below.
Mostly hospitals, clinics, laboratories and universities, rather than manufacturers. University Hospital Sharjah, a 325-bed government hospital in University City, opened in 2011 and added specialty units in 2015, according to search reports. Sharjah Healthcare City, announced in 2010 and planned for about 2.43 million square metres near University City, had its master plan approved in 2017, and in May 2023 Al Ahlia Group was announced as the first entity to build there, a 120-bed hospital. These are reported plans, so check progress with the Sharjah Healthcare City Authority. They shape demand across healthcare and medical equipment.
Hospitals and clinics buy hospital beds, patient monitors, X-ray equipment and sterilization equipment. Dental practices buy dental chairs and dental consumables. Laboratories and universities buy laboratory equipment and lab consumables, while clinics and care homes buy disposable supplies in volume. Pharmaceutical manufacturing in Sharjah is limited, so pharmaceutical equipment is a thinner local market than in Saudi Arabia.
Medical devices are regulated nationally by the Ministry of Health and Prevention, and facilities are licensed locally by the Sharjah Health Authority. Ask a supplier for its device registration, the manufacturer's certificate and the local agent's licence. For medical gas installations and imaging rooms, add the contractor's drawings and a Civil Defence plan approval where the building needs it. Confirm current rules with the authorities before ordering high-value items.
Distributors cluster in Sharjah's commercial districts and in neighbouring Dubai, and a number serve hospitals across the Northern Emirates. Larger imaging equipment arrives by air or sea and needs site preparation, so ask for installation, training and service response in the contract. Ask who holds consumable stock locally and how expiry dates are handled. Post a requirement to compare quotes on the same specification.
Sharjah's industry sits in three places. The first is the Sharjah Industrial Area inside the city, a run of numbered districts mostly along the Dubai border. Wikipedia lists 18 of them plus Al Sajaa, and describes workshops, warehouses, scrap yards, auto parts dealers, building materials firms, engineering contractors and the head office of a paint maker.
The second is Al Sajaa, further out near the airport and Al Hamriyah Port. A 2018 Gulf News report described the Al Sajaa Industrial Oasis, about 14 million square feet backed by Sharjah Asset Management Holding, as land for firms leaving the inner-city areas. It is not a free zone. Sajaa is also where the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) runs a gas and condensate processing complex with a hub for pipelines to the Northern Emirates.
The third is the free zones. Hamriyah Free Zone was set up in 1995, covers about 24 square kilometres according to Wikipedia, has its own deep-water port, and holds an LPG storage terminal with a marine berth. SAIF Zone, beside Sharjah International Airport, lists offices, purpose-built warehouses, plots from 2,500 square metres for custom factories or warehouses, and a jewellery manufacturing park. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, a free zone, sits in University City.
Sharjah has ports on two coasts. Gulftainer lists the Sharjah Container Terminal, the Khorfakkan Commercial Terminal on the east coast, the Sharjah Dry Port and the Sajaa Dry Port among the facilities it manages. Hamriyah's port is described as 14 metres deep. By road, the E311 and E611 connect to Dubai, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, and the E88 Al Dhaid Road runs across to Fujairah. Many buyers also clear cargo at Jebel Ali in Dubai, so ask your forwarder which gate suits your load.
The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) licenses businesses and has an industrial-area branch; its page says factories also need approval from Sharjah Municipality and the environmental authorities. Sharjah Municipality handles building permits, product approvals and food control. Sharjah Civil Defence approves plans, issues hazardous materials permits and compliance certificates, and ran a large inspection campaign in the industrial zones in the first half of 2025. The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) supplies power, water and piped natural gas. Companies inside a free zone deal with that zone's own authority first.
Building materials, paints, engineering workshops, auto parts and general trading dominate the inner industrial districts. Food processing has a foothold in Hamriyah, where a halal processed meat factory was reported in 2017. Gas, condensate and LPG handling drive oilfield and process-equipment demand at Sajaa and Hamriyah. Farming is small, centred on Al Dhaid. Sharjah is not a mining or heavy-steel city, so those buyers look to Abu Dhabi or the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
