A hydraulic power unit (HPU) is a packaged motor, pump, tank, filters and valves that supplies pressurised oil to a machine or actuator. This UAE page covers the HPU types, how to size the tank, cooler and motor for summer heat, which approvals apply, and how to buy standard or custom units from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah suppliers.
Maintenance, repair and operations buying in Abu Dhabi follows the big plants: the Ruwais oil, gas and petrochemical complex, the metal and cable producers of Mussafah, water and power stations, and the workshops that serve them. Shutdowns and turnarounds create bursts of demand, and day-to-day buying is steady. The industrial equipment and MRO categories with the most enquiries are industrial valves, centrifugal pumps, bearings, seals and gaskets and air compressors.
Large operators work from approved vendor lists and equipment standards, so a distributor needs the manufacturer's authorisation and the datasheet to match. Safety relief valves and control valves carry test certificates, and mechanical seals are specified by pump model. Hydraulics and pneumatics support the fabrication yards, so hydraulic hoses and fittings sell every day. Counterfeit-looking bearing or valve stock is a real risk in any spares market, so buy from authorised channels.
Mussafah and ICAD are the working centre of the trade, with distributors, machine shops and repair workshops sitting next to the plants they serve. KEZAD zones near Khalifa Port hold importers with larger stock. Ruwais customers are a long drive from the city, so ask about stock held nearer the site and about emergency delivery times, especially in a shutdown window.
Start with a bill of materials listing part numbers, sizes and pressure class, since near matches cause rework. Ask for mill and test certificates on pressure parts, and the warranty terms on repaired pumps and gearboxes. Imports arrive at Khalifa Port or by air at Zayed International, and quick air freight is the usual route for urgent items. Consolidate small orders to reduce delivery runs, and post a requirement when you need alternates quoted against an original part number.
Abu Dhabi's industry sits on the mainland, not on the island. The long-established base is Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city that began as a small area in the 1970s and grew with government incentives and the building boom of the 2000s. Inside it, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, known as ICAD, is operated by KEZAD Group. KEZAD describes itself as the UAE's largest operator of fully integrated economic zones, with a 550 sq km land bank and more than 1,750 companies.
The newer zones lie along the E11 highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. KEZAD Al Ma'mourah offers serviced land, pre-built warehouses and small industrial units next to Khalifa Port, and its Metal Park is planned at 450,000 sqm. KEZAD also runs a zone in Al Ain, inland toward the Omani border. Further west, Ruwais is a separate story: it is the oil, gas and petrochemical complex of the Al Dhafra region, where the TA'ZIZ chemicals zone is being built, with production reported on track for 2027 in a November 2024 report. Masdar City is different again, a cleantech and research free zone close to the airport.
Khalifa Port is the main gateway for containers and vehicles. AD Ports Group calls it the region's first semi-automated port and lists more than 25 shipping lines and links to more than 70 ports. A dedicated roll-on roll-off terminal serves vehicle imports. The group counts five international airports within reach, including Zayed International, Al Maktoum International in Dubai and Al Ain International. Etihad Rail has carried bulk and industrial cargo since 2023, and AD Ports has reported a Fujairah to ICAD rail route with a customs-enabled inland gateway. Road links to Dubai on the E11 are short, but confirm transit times with your forwarder.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport sets building policy, including the Estidama Pearl rating that is required for a building permit. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, ADAFSA, regulates food safety and runs a veterinary quarantine at Khalifa Port. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervises the OSHAD safety framework, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority requires approval and a licence for fire and safety products. Free zone tenants deal with KEZAD Group or Masdar City Free Zone, while mainland firms are licensed through the Department of Economic Development.
Oil, gas and petrochemicals drive the largest orders, followed by metals, building materials, food logistics, vehicles and utilities. Government-linked projects set much of the pace, so supplier prequalification and local approvals matter more here than a quick trade counter sale.
