Herbicides Suppliers, UAE

Herbicides in the UAE are the selective and non-selective weed control products used on farms, date plantations, golf courses, parks, roadside verges, utility corridors and industrial sites. This page explains the main herbicide types and modes of action, why dust, hard water and heat cut performance in UAE conditions, which MoCCAE registration rules apply as of 2026, and how to buy from registered UAE suppliers listed below.

What herbicides are used in the UAE?

UAE buyers use herbicides in three main settings: farms and plantations, where weeds compete with vegetables, fodder and palms for water and fertiliser; turf and landscape, where contractors keep grass, beds and paving clean; and non-crop areas such as roadsides, substations, pipeline corridors and industrial yards. Herbicides are one of the crop protection lines within the agri-inputs family for UAE growers, and in law they count as pesticides.

TypeTypical UAE useWhat to check
Non-selective foliar, systemic (for example glyphosate)Clearing weeds before planting, palm basins, fence lines, paving joints, non-crop sitesRegistered label uses, salt form, water quality limits, rain-free and re-entry periods
Non-selective contactFast burn-down of annual weeds where regrowth is acceptableRegistration status, operator protection, drift risk near crops
Selective broadleaf herbicidesBroadleaf weeds in turf and cereal or fodder grassesTurf species tolerance, temperature limits, volatility of the formulation
Selective grass herbicidesGrass weeds in broadleaf vegetables and ornamental bedsCrop safety, growth stage, adjuvant needed
Pre-emergence residual herbicidesLandscape beds, gravel areas, roadsides, some crops before weeds emergeSoil type and organic matter, irrigation to activate, persistence and replanting interval
Total vegetation control (soil sterilants)Substations, tank farms, rail and utility yardsRegistration for non-crop use, leaching risk to groundwater, neighbouring trees

Each active ingredient belongs to a mode of action group in the HRAC global classification, which assigns every herbicide a numbered group. Rotating or mixing groups slows weed resistance, so ask suppliers to state the HRAC group on every quote. Herbicides are bought alongside insect and disease control from pesticides and insecticides suppliers and applied with knapsack and boom sprayers from the farm machinery range. On new landscape and farm plots, preparing ground with soil conditioners that are weed-seed free avoids importing the problem.

Why do herbicides underperform in UAE conditions?

Dust on leaves, hard or brackish spray water and drought-stressed weeds are the three most common reasons a correctly chosen herbicide fails in the UAE. Each one is manageable once the applicator knows to look for it.

  • Dust. University of Wisconsin research summarised for growers found that dust or soil on leaves can bind and inactivate glyphosate, and that dust raised by vehicles or the sprayer itself is enough to cause problems. Spray after irrigation or a wash-down where possible, and keep sprayers off dusty tracks upwind of the target.
  • Hard and brackish water. Calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron in spray water combine with glyphosate into complexes the leaf absorbs poorly. The same research cites North Dakota work showing noticeable antagonism above about 150 ppm calcium or 300 ppm sodium. Brackish UAE groundwater can exceed that, so test the water and add ammonium sulphate to the tank before the herbicide, or use desalinated water for mixing.
  • Drought-stressed weeds. Weeds under water stress thicken their leaf wax and take up less herbicide. Spray actively growing weeds, ideally a day or two after irrigation, and treat them small.
  • Heat. Midday summer spraying raises evaporation of droplets and, for volatile formulations such as some ester products, vapour drift onto nearby crops and ornamentals. Spray early in the morning, follow the label temperature limit and use drift-reducing nozzles.

Which registrations apply to herbicides in the UAE?

As of 2026, every herbicide sold in the UAE must be registered with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) before it is imported, exported or circulated, under Ministerial Decision No. 27 of 2018 on pesticide registration. Banned active ingredients cannot be registered or imported.

Emirate municipalities may also license who applies pesticides in public areas, so landscape contractors should confirm local requirements before they spray. Ask each supplier for the MoCCAE registration certificate in its own name, or the holder's letter appointing it as distributor, plus the Arabic and English label and safety data sheet.

How do you choose a herbicide supplier in the UAE?

Choose a supplier that holds the registration for the exact product and use you need, can explain the label, and keeps stock in date. A cheaper drum from a parallel importer is not legal to sell if the registration belongs to someone else.

  • Registration holder or appointed distributor. Registration holders import from the manufacturer; appointed distributors and farm stores in Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah sell on. Confirm the chain in writing.
  • Label fit. The registered label must cover your crop or site, weed and dose. A non-crop label does not authorise use in a vegetable farm.
  • Technical support. Good suppliers advise on adjuvants, water conditioning, resistance rotation and sprayer calibration, and will visit when control fails.
  • Pack and date. Check manufacture and expiry dates on delivery and buy pack sizes you will use within the season.

What drives herbicide price and lead time in the UAE?

Herbicide prices in the UAE depend on the active ingredient, whether it is an original brand or a registered generic, concentration per litre and pack size. Generic glyphosate and common selectives are usually in local stock; specialist residuals and newer actives may be imported to order. A product with no UAE registration cannot be supplied until it is registered, which takes far longer than shipping. Compare offers on cost per treated hectare at the label rate rather than price per litre, and post your requirement to reach several registered UAE herbicide suppliers at once.

Frequently Asked Questions — Herbicides

Do herbicides need registration in the UAE?
Yes. As of 2026, herbicides are pesticides under UAE law and must be registered with MoCCAE before they are imported, exported or sold, under Ministerial Decision No. 27 of 2018. Banned active ingredients cannot be registered, and registration certificates cannot be transferred to another importer.
Why does glyphosate sometimes fail in the UAE?
Glyphosate often fails in the UAE because dust on leaves binds it, calcium and sodium in hard or brackish spray water reduce uptake, and drought-stressed weeds absorb less. Spraying actively growing, clean weeds and adding ammonium sulphate to hard water before the herbicide usually restores control.
What is the HRAC group on a herbicide?
The HRAC group is the number that the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee assigns to each herbicide mode of action. UAE growers and landscapers use it to rotate or mix different modes of action, which slows the development of herbicide-resistant weeds on farms and turf.
Which herbicides are used on roadsides and industrial sites in the UAE?
Roadsides, substations and industrial yards in the UAE use non-selective foliar herbicides for existing weeds and residual or total vegetation control products to keep ground bare. The product must be registered with MoCCAE for non-crop use, and residual products need care near trees and groundwater.
When is the best time to spray herbicides in UAE heat?
In the UAE, spray herbicides early in the morning when temperatures are lower and air is calmer, which cuts droplet evaporation and vapour drift. Avoid midday summer spraying, follow the label temperature limits, and treat weeds when they are small and actively growing.
Should I buy herbicides from a registration holder or a stockist in the UAE?
Either is fine if the chain is legal. The UAE registration holder imports from the manufacturer, and appointed distributors and farm stores sell on. Ask any stockist for the holder registration certificate and appointment letter, because selling another company registered product without appointment is not permitted.
