HDPE pipes in the UAE are high density polyethylene pressure and non-pressure pipes, joined by heat fusion, that carry buried water services, irrigation, pressure sewers, gas and cable routes. Within the UAE pipes and fittings category they are the main buried plastic pipe, and this page goes into what that overview only outlines: PE grades and SDR, how heat and sun change the rating, fusion jointing and inspection, Abu Dhabi approvals, and who makes and imports HDPE. Technical and regulatory points were checked in October 2026.

What HDPE pipe types do UAE projects buy?

UAE buyers mostly order PE100 pressure pipe for water and irrigation, PE pipe for gas distribution, and non-pressure PE for drainage and cable ducts. The grade (PE80 or PE100), the SDR and the jointing method define the pipe more than the diameter does.

TypeTypical UAE useKey spec
PE100 water pressure pipeCommunity water networks, plot connections, landscape irrigation mains, treated sewage effluent linesISO 4427-2 pipe, PN rating at 20 °C, SDR, potable approval where the line carries drinking water
PE fittings: electrofusion and butt fusionTees, reducers, tapping saddles, couplers on water and gas linesISO 4427-3 fittings; same PE grade and SDR as the pipe
PE gas pipeBuried distribution in residential and commercial developmentsISO 4437 series; higher design coefficient than water
Pressure sewer and rising mainsLift station discharge, force mains in new communitiesISO 4427 for pressure drainage; fusion joints to resist pull-out
HDPE cable and telecom ductsPower and telecom routes under roads and plotsDuct specification of the utility or telecom operator

HDPE competes with uPVC pressure and drainage pipe in smaller sizes, and with ductile iron water mains and GRP in large transmission sizes. Utility transmission material choices are covered under water pipeline materials, the farm side under irrigation systems, and building gas networks under gas distribution systems.

How is HDPE pipe rated, and what does SDR mean?

An HDPE pipe's pressure rating comes from its material strength (MRS), its wall ratio (SDR, outside diameter divided by wall thickness) and a design coefficient. The PE100+ Association gives MRS as 10 MPa for PE100 and 8 MPa for PE80, valid up to 20 °C, and a minimum design coefficient of 1.25 for water and pressure sewerage and 2.0 for gas.

Maximum operating pressure in bar is 20 x MRS divided by (C x (SDR minus 1)). By that formula a PE100 SDR 11 pipe for water works out at 16 bar, while a PE80 pipe with the same wall gives less, which is why a specification must name both grade and SDR. ISO 4427-1 applies up to an allowable operating pressure of 25 bar at the 20 °C reference temperature and points to its Annex A for other temperatures.

How do UAE heat, sun and ground conditions affect HDPE pipe?

Heat is the main design issue for HDPE in the UAE: the 20 °C rating falls as pipe and water temperature rise, so lines near the surface, in sun or carrying warm water need derating. Sun and soil are easier to manage.

Temperature derating

The PE100+ Association says MRS applies up to 20 °C and refers to ISO 13761 for higher temperatures, and ISO 4427-1 carries guidance in an annex. Shallow buried pipe in UAE sand, exposed irrigation headers and treated effluent lines can all run well above 20 °C in summer. Give the supplier the maximum water and ground temperature and ask for the derated pressure in writing, then pick the SDR from that figure.

Sunlight

Black PE compounds contain about 2 to 2.5 percent finely dispersed carbon black to block UV, according to the PE100+ Association. The Plastics Pipe Institute says black pipe with more than 2 percent carbon black resists sunlight indefinitely, while non-black pipe should not sit in unprotected outdoor storage for more than two years unless the maker allows longer. Blue or fully coloured pipe therefore needs shade in a UAE yard; black pipe with blue stripes is the usual compromise for water.

Storage, handling and ground

PPI advises spacer strips between rows when stacking pipe larger than two inches and limits stack height. Coils and long lengths soften in heat, so keep stacks low and supported. In the ground HDPE does not corrode, which suits salty coastal soil in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but drinking water pipe laid through contaminated fill needs special consideration because hydrocarbons can permeate plastic, so share the soil report with the supplier.

Which standards and approvals apply to HDPE pipes in the UAE?

As of 2026, HDPE pipe in the UAE is bought to ISO standards named in the utility or project specification, with QCC technical approval for Abu Dhabi infrastructure materials; there is no single federal HDPE certificate.

GSO ISO 21307, approved in May 2022, defines three butt fusion procedures (single low pressure, dual low pressure and single high pressure) and how to check the finished joint. Ask the contractor which procedure the machine and welder are qualified for, and keep the fusion records with the as-built drawings. Many network specifications also ask for fusion machines with data logging and for bead inspection, so check yours. The QCC application route is described on the parent page.

Who supplies HDPE pipes in the UAE?

HDPE pipe is extruded in the UAE from PE100 resin that is also produced in Abu Dhabi, so standard diameters are usually available locally; imported pipe fills gaps in large diameters, specialist multilayer pipe and fittings ranges.

Ask for the pipe certificate to ISO 4427 for the size and SDR, the resin name and its classification, potable water evidence, QCC approval where needed, and the fittings maker's compatibility statement. Buy from the extruder or an authorised distributor for networks; stockists suit short lengths and repair fittings. See our guide to vetting industrial suppliers, or post your HDPE pipe requirement with grade, SDR, sizes and delivery emirate.

What affects the price and lead time of HDPE pipes in the UAE?

Resin price and wall thickness set most of the cost per metre.

  • Polyethylene price. Quotes track the resin market and often carry short validity.
  • SDR and diameter. A lower SDR (thicker wall) uses more resin per metre.
  • Fittings. Large electrofusion and fabricated fittings are costly and sometimes imported.
  • Coils against straight lengths. Small sizes come in coils; large sizes need long trailers and site space.
  • Origin. Local pipe ships in days to weeks; imported pipe depends on sailing into Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port.

Frequently Asked Questions — HDPE Pipes

What is the difference between PE80 and PE100 HDPE pipe?
PE100 HDPE pipe has a minimum required strength of 10 MPa and PE80 of 8 MPa, at temperatures up to 20 °C. For the same SDR, PE100 carries a higher pressure, so UAE water networks mostly specify PE100. Always state grade and SDR on the order.
What pressure is an SDR 11 PE100 pipe rated for?
Using the PE100+ Association formula with a 1.25 design coefficient for water, a PE100 SDR 11 pipe is rated at 16 bar at 20 °C. In the UAE, pipe and water often run hotter than 20 °C, so ask the supplier for the derated pressure.
Can black HDPE pipe be stored in the sun in the UAE?
Black HDPE pipe with more than 2 percent carbon black resists sunlight indefinitely, according to the Plastics Pipe Institute, so it can be stored outdoors in the UAE. Blue or other non-black pipe should not sit unprotected outdoors for more than two years unless the maker allows it.
Which standard covers butt fusion of HDPE pipe?
Butt fusion of HDPE pipe is covered by ISO 21307, adopted in the Gulf as GSO ISO 21307:2022. It defines single low pressure, dual low pressure and single high pressure procedures and how joints are assessed. Many UAE network specifications also ask for fusion records.
Do HDPE pipes need approval in Abu Dhabi?
HDPE pipes used in Abu Dhabi infrastructure, where named in the emirate guidelines or a utility specification, can require technical approval from the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC). The UAE manufacturer or licensed supplier applies, so ask for the approval letter.
Is HDPE pipe made in the UAE?
Yes. HDPE pipe is extruded in the UAE by makers such as Cosmoplast and Interplast, and PE100 pipe resin is produced in Abu Dhabi by Borouge. Imported HDPE from makers such as Egeplast, Kuzeyboru, Firat, Wavin and Pipelife is also sold through UAE distributors.
