Ethylene and propylene plants in the UAE are steam cracking complexes, centred on Borouge at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi, that turn ethane and other feeds into the olefins used for polyethylene and polypropylene. This page covers the equipment inside them, the codes and approvals that apply, who supplies it and what drives lead time.
Ajman has no oil field, refinery or large tank farm in the sources reviewed, so oil, gas and petrochemicals here means trading, lubricants and local fuel distribution. Oxford Business Group's 2025 report lists about 70 oil and gas firms among Ajman Free Zone tenants, mostly traders and service companies. A privately owned lubricants and fuel additives blender is listed in the New Industrial Area. The real industry sits in Abu Dhabi, and the storage hub for the east coast is Fujairah, with a large liquid terminal at Hamriyah Free Zone in neighbouring Sharjah.
Demand is for petroleum products, base oils for blending, and bottled gas for kitchens and workshops. Marine and vehicle workshops buy lubricants and cleaning solvents. Small fabricators supply storage tanks for fuel depots, and traders buy valves and line pipes and fittings from stock to resell to contractors working elsewhere in the country.
The Ajman Department of Economic Development ran an inspection campaign on licensed petroleum facilities in February 2024, which signals that licences and safety are actively checked. Storage of flammable liquids or gas cylinders also needs Civil Defence approval, and building changes need the Municipality and Planning Department. Confirm the exact licence class for your activity with the Department of Economic Development before leasing a yard.
Many Ajman trading firms in the free zone quote for Abu Dhabi and offshore work. Ask for the manufacturer's test certificates, material traceability and any ADNOC or client approved vendor status in writing, as these cannot be assumed from a trader's catalogue. Ajman Free Zone warehouses suit stockholding of spares and small bore pipe. For comparison quotes on one datasheet, use post a requirement.
Ajman is the smallest emirate, and its industry is compressed into a few districts. Ajman Free Zone sits beside Ajman Port and was created in 1988. Oxford Business Group's 2025 Ajman report puts it at about 867,000 square metres with over 530 warehouses, 7,000 offices and 22 clusters, and counts roughly 9,000 companies. Sector counts in the same report include about 800 construction related traders, over 430 food and beverage firms, 361 in jewellery and 320 in textiles.
Outside the free zone, the Al Jurf industrial areas 1, 2 and 3 lie on the northern border with Umm Al Quwain, and Ajman Industrial 1 and 2 lie near the Sharjah border. The same report describes Industrial 1 as focused on electrical and mechanical repair and Industrial 2 on textiles and ready-to-wear clothing. Inland, Manama and Masfout are mainly farming settlements rather than factory districts.
Ajman Port handles around 1,000 ship calls a year and is a small gateway beside the free zone. Larger container volumes usually come through Sharjah and Dubai ports and arrive by road, because Sharjah surrounds Ajman on three sides. The Free Zone describes easy access to Dubai and Sharjah airports. The Oxford Business Group report mentions a planned deeper water port, so check current berth and draught limits with your forwarder before booking large lots.
Trade and industrial licences come from the Ajman Department of Economic Development. The Free Zones Authority of Ajman oversees Ajman Free Zone and Ajman Media City Free Zone. The Ajman Municipality and Planning Department handles building permits and runs a building material testing laboratory. Civil Defence sign-off appears in the completion process for non-residential buildings. Power and water are supplied by Etihad Water and Electricity. The Ajman Chamber, renamed in July 2024, represents commercial, industrial and agricultural firms.
Construction trades and building material traders are the largest group, followed by food and beverage, textiles, jewellery and automotive. Small workshops buy bearings, tools and spares, and the free zone's technology and robotics hub draws a smaller electronics demand. Oil and gas, mining and heavy process industry are thin in Ajman. Buyers with that need usually source from Abu Dhabi or Sharjah and use Ajman for trading, storage and light fabrication.
