Distribution Transformers brands in UAE
What is a distribution transformer, and which types are used in the UAE?
A distribution transformer is the last step-down transformer before the customer: it takes medium voltage from the utility ring and delivers 400/230 V to the low-voltage switchboard. It sits in the transformers family for UAE projects, fed by a ring main unit from medium-voltage switchgear and feeding the main panel in low-voltage switchgear. Units above roughly the distribution range, used in 132 kV and 33 kV grid and plant substations, are covered under power transformers.
Dubai's utility shows the typical size range: in October 2018 DEWA awarded contracts for 990 cast resin 11/0.4 kV distribution transformers of 1,000 and 1,500 kVA, each with low-voltage smart meters, to expand its distribution network.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Points to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-immersed, hermetically sealed | Outdoor and kiosk substations, industrial plants, labour accommodation, farms | Tank fully filled with no air space, pressure relief device, oil temperature indicator, corrugated or radiator cooling |
| Oil-immersed with conservator | Larger ratings and sites where the owner prefers oil level visibility and gas relay protection | Conservator and Buchholz relay, silica gel breather, oil level gauge |
| Cast resin dry-type | Indoor substations in towers, malls, hospitals, metro and data centres | Insulation class, enclosure IP rating, fans, environmental, climatic and fire classes to IEC 60076-11 |
| Packaged (prefabricated) substation | Villas, parks, construction power, temporary and remote loads | Transformer plus MV and LV switchgear in one enclosure, type tested to IEC 62271-202, solar heating of the enclosure |
What should a UAE distribution transformer specification state?
A UAE distribution transformer specification should fix the electrical rating, the losses, the site conditions and the utility it must satisfy. If any of these is missing, quotes will differ in ways that are hard to compare after the fact.
- Rating and ratio: kVA, primary voltage (11 kV or 6.6 kV depending on the network), 400 V secondary, 50 Hz.
- Vector group and impedance: a vector group such as Dyn11 and the percentage impedance the network designer has used in fault level calculations.
- Tapping: off-circuit tap range and step size on the HV winding.
- Losses: guaranteed no-load and load losses, the tolerance, and penalties for exceeding them. IEC TS 60076-20:2017 offers energy efficiency indices and evaluation methods that buyer and maker can agree on.
- Cooling and temperature rise: ONAN for oil units, AN or AF for cast resin, designed for the real site ambient.
- Accessories: cable boxes or bushings matched to the RMU and LV panel, pressure relief, temperature monitoring, and smart metering where the utility requires it.
- Finish: paint system for coastal sites and access for radiator cleaning.
How do UAE heat, sand and humidity affect distribution transformers?
UAE heat is the main design issue: IEC 60076-1 normal service conditions assume ambient air no warmer than 40 °C and an altitude no higher than 1,000 m, and UAE summers exceed the temperature limit. A unit designed only to the defaults will run hotter and age its insulation faster.
- Temperature rise corrections: IEC 60076-2:2011 includes recommended temperature rise corrections for special service conditions. Give the maker the site maximum, hottest month average and yearly average so the guaranteed rises are reduced to suit.
- Sun on kiosks: a packaged substation in full sun heats up inside. The 2022 edition of IEC 62271-202 added an informative annex with a test procedure for the effect of solar radiation; ask whether the enclosure was tested to it.
- Humidity and breathing: a conservator transformer breathes air through a silica gel breather, which saturates quickly in coastal humidity. Hermetically sealed units avoid that maintenance, which is one reason they are common on smaller ratings.
- Sand: windblown sand blocks radiator fins and kiosk louvres; specify filtered ventilation and plan cleaning before summer.
- Harmonics: chiller drives, LED lighting and UPS loads add harmonic heating; give the maker the expected load profile.
Which standards and approvals apply to distribution transformers in the UAE?
UAE distribution transformers are built to the IEC 60076 series and accepted by the utility whose network they connect to. As of 2026 no federal UAE minimum efficiency rule specific to distribution transformers was found; losses are set by the purchaser or utility specification, so confirm with MoIAT and the utility.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 60076-1:2011 | General requirements, ratings and normal service conditions | IEC, through the project or utility specification |
| IEC 60076-2:2011 | Temperature rise limits and tests for oil-immersed units | IEC |
| IEC 60076-11:2018 | Cast resin and other dry-type units | IEC |
| IEC TS 60076-20:2017 | Energy efficiency index and loss evaluation methods | IEC, by agreement or local rule |
| IEC 62271-202:2022 (GSO IEC 62271-202:2024) | Prefabricated HV/LV substations up to 52 kV | IEC and GSO |
| Utility specification and approved manufacturer status | Units on DEWA, TAQA Distribution, SEWA or Etihad Water and Electricity networks | The utility |
| ICV certificate | Federal and national company tenders that score in-country value | MoIAT National ICV Programme |
In Abu Dhabi, the former ADDC and AADC distribution companies were brought under one structure called TAQA Distribution, announced in September 2024, so older approval letters may carry the earlier names; check that they are still recognised. European-made units are often designed to the EU Ecodesign Tier 2 loss limits applicable since July 2021 for 50 Hz networks; that is a useful benchmark but not a UAE requirement. The ECAS and EQM conformity guide covers MoIAT certification for low-voltage items supplied with the transformer.
Who supplies distribution transformers in the UAE?
Distribution transformers in the UAE come mainly from local factories and from international makers through regional offices, with panel builders packaging them into substations. Most units are built to order against a utility specification, so stockist trade is limited.
- Federal Transformers Company, Abu Dhabi: oil-immersed and cast resin distribution transformers and packaged substations.
- Emirates Transformer and Switchgear, Dubai: distribution transformers with feeder pillars, ring main units and unit substations.
- Siemens GEAFOL cast resin units, Schneider Electric Trihal and Minera ranges and ABB oil and dry-type distribution transformers.
- Hitachi Energy, Hyundai Electric, WEG and Elsewedy Electric distribution transformer ranges.
- Saudi Transformers Company, a Dammam manufacturer of distribution transformers and packaged substations.
Before ordering, ask the supplier for evidence that the exact rating and design is accepted by your utility, a routine test report format, and the factory slot. The guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers vetting. To compare offers, post your distribution transformer requirement with rating, losses, site ambient and utility.
What affects distribution transformer price and lead time in the UAE?
Price follows kVA, losses and construction type; lead time follows the factory queue and whether the design already has utility approval. Compare offers on total owning cost, not purchase price alone.
- Losses: lower guaranteed losses need more core steel and conductor, raising price but cutting running cost. Ask the owner for the capitalisation values used to evaluate losses.
- Winding and core materials: copper or aluminium windings and core steel grade follow commodity prices.
- Type: cast resin costs more per kVA than oil; packaged substations add switchgear and enclosure.
- Tests: routine tests are standard; type tests, special tests and witnessed testing add cost and time.
- Origin: units built in Abu Dhabi or Dubai avoid sea freight and may score ICV; imports land at Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port.
