Dissolved Air Flotation Suppliers, UAE
Dissolved air flotation, or DAF, removes oils, fats, algae and suspended solids from water by attaching micro-bubbles to them so they float to the surface for skimming. In the UAE it is used for food and industrial effluent and for desalination pretreatment. This page explains the types, sizing questions, chemicals and supplier checks.

What is dissolved air flotation and how does it work?
Dissolved air flotation is a separation process that dissolves air in water under pressure and then releases it in a flotation tank, where the micro-bubbles attach to oil, grease and fine solids and lift them to the surface as a sludge blanket that is skimmed off. It is a primary or pretreatment step in wastewater treatment in the UAE, and it is not the same machine as the flotation cells used to separate minerals in mining.
A reference page on DAF describes four stages: air is dissolved in a pressure vessel at roughly 3 to 6 atmospheres, the pressure drop releases micro-bubbles typically 30 to 50 micrometres in diameter, the bubbles carry particles to the surface for skimming, and clarified water leaves from the bottom of the tank. Coagulant and flocculant aids are normally dosed ahead of the tank to bind particles together.
| Design | How it differs | Where it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Recycle-flow DAF | A portion of clarified water is saturated with air and returned to the tank, so the raw feed is not pressurised | Most industrial effluent, where the feed has fragile floc or solids that would damage pumps |
| Full-flow DAF | The whole feed passes through the pressurised air system | Clean, low-solids streams where a smaller saturation system is acceptable |
| Partial-flow DAF | Part of the feed is saturated | Intermediate duties |
| Packaged or skid-mounted DAF | Tank, saturation system and skimmer in one fabricated unit | Small and medium plants with limited site space |
| Large circular or rectangular DAF with sludge scrapers | Site-built or large modular tanks | Municipal and desalination pretreatment, high flows |
The reference page lists recycle, full and partial flow as sub-types without comparing them, so the table above reflects general process practice and you should confirm the choice with the designer.
Where is DAF used in the UAE?
DAF is used wherever the water carries fats, oils or light solids that settle poorly: food and beverage plants, abattoirs and poultry processing, laundries, oil and gas produced water, and as a pretreatment ahead of membranes. The reference page lists municipal primary treatment, food and beverage fat removal, pulp and paper, produced water and membrane pretreatment, and it reports that DAF can remove over 90 percent of suspended solids and fats, oils and grease, a claim it does not source, so ask any supplier for performance data on your own wastewater.
A UAE project shows the desalination use. Xylem was reported to supply a DAF pretreatment system for the Fujairah 1 independent water and power plant, whose source water from the Gulf of Oman is prone to harmful algal blooms. The trade report states the Clari-DAF system is more than 95 percent effective in removing the microorganisms before desalination and also removes free and emulsified oil to protect the reverse osmosis system, serving seawater RO capacity of 306,760 cubic metres per day. DAF is used because algae and oil are light and float better than they settle.
For smaller UAE plants, the more common first stop is a grease trap or interceptor, with DAF added when fats, oils and suspended solids exceed what the sewer or the downstream plant accepts. See also industrial effluent treatment for the whole treatment train, and aeration systems for the biological stage that often follows.
What chemicals and sludge handling does a DAF system need?
A DAF unit usually needs coagulant and flocculant dosing, pH control and a plan for the floated sludge. The chemistry decides how well fine particles and emulsified oil attach to bubbles, so bench or pilot tests with your wastewater are worth the cost.
- Coagulants and flocculants. Buy from the flocculants and coagulants and water treatment chemicals categories, and ask the supplier for a jar test report.
- Dosing. Size dosing pumps and mixing so the floc forms before the tank, and avoid high-shear points that break it up.
- Float sludge. The skimmed layer is thick and fatty. Plan storage, mixing and dewatering. A Saudi poultry plant sends DAF sludge through a holding tank to a tricanter centrifuge, and UAE plants can use sludge dewatering equipment in the same way.
- Disposal. Dispose of float sludge through a permitted route; where it contains oil or chemicals, use hazardous waste disposal.
How do UAE heat and water quality affect DAF?
Warm water holds less dissolved air, and hot food or process effluent keeps fats liquid and emulsified, so a DAF that works on cool feed can need more air or pre-cooling in a UAE summer. This is general process behaviour, not a figure from a UAE source, so ask the designer to state the design temperature and the air supply at that temperature.
- Ask for design at peak feed temperature and at the highest salinity and oil load.
- Use materials suited to the feed: stainless steel or coated carbon steel for saline or aggressive effluent, and shaded equipment for pumps and compressors.
- Protect dosing chemicals from heat, since some polymers degrade in hot storage.
- Plan for dust and sun on open tanks, with covers if odour control is needed near housing.
How do you choose a DAF supplier in the UAE?
Choose a supplier that asks for your effluent analysis, runs or offers a pilot, states a guaranteed outlet quality and supports the plant after handover. Ask the following.
- Which effluent data does the sizing rest on: flow, fats, oils and grease, suspended solids, COD, temperature, pH and variation through the day?
- What outlet quality is guaranteed, and how is it measured?
- What are the surface loading, hydraulic retention and recycle ratio, and what air supply is installed?
- What chemicals and power does it use, and what does the sludge look like?
- Who services it locally, and how fast do spares arrive?
Xylem, through its Flygt brand listing, designs and manufactures DAF systems and describes them as separating oils, greases and some contaminants for further treatment. Sulzer lists flotation of oil and grease among the uses of its submersible aerators. The sourcing guide for the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers how to verify authorised dealers.
What affects the price and lead time of DAF systems?
Price follows flow, solids and oil load, tank construction, saturation and skimmer design, controls and sludge handling, and operating cost is dominated by chemicals, power and sludge disposal. A packaged unit can be faster to deliver than a site-built tank, but both need commissioning, chemical trials and operator training. Ask for a written lead time and a spares list. To compare offers, post your requirement with your effluent analysis.
