Cathodic Protection Systems Suppliers, UAE
Cathodic protection systems in the UAE are the sacrificial anode and impressed current installations that stop corrosion on buried pipelines, tank bottoms, jetties, offshore platforms and reinforced concrete. This page explains how each type works, what a package includes, UAE soil and seawater conditions, the standards and certifications that apply as of 2026, and what moves price and lead time.

What are cathodic protection systems and which types do UAE projects use?
Cathodic protection (CP) slows corrosion by making the steel the cathode of an electrochemical cell. In a galvanic system a more active metal such as zinc, aluminium alloy or magnesium alloy is connected to the steel and corrodes in its place. In an impressed current system an external DC source, usually a transformer rectifier, drives protective current through inert anodes. CP sits in the pipeline equipment and materials family for UAE projects, and works as the second line of defence behind the coating.
| System | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Sacrificial (galvanic) anodes, buried or immersed | Short pipelines, tank exteriors, jetty piles, offshore platforms, marine structures | Anode alloy, weight, current output, design life, soil or seawater resistivity |
| Impressed current (ICCP) groundbeds | Long pipelines, plant piping, tank bottoms, large buried networks | Anode type, groundbed layout, transformer rectifier rating, power supply |
| Transformer rectifiers and remote monitoring | Power source for ICCP, with output control and data logging | Voltage and current rating, automatic control mode, enclosure and ambient rating |
| Test posts, reference electrodes, bonds | Monitoring points along a pipeline or around a tank | Reference electrode type, cable sizes, test post enclosure |
| Insulating joints and flange insulation kits | Electrical isolation at stations, plant boundaries, branch connections | Pressure class, material, dielectric rating, test certificates |
CP does not work alone. A buried pipe needs a good external coating, described at pipeline coatings in the UAE, because the better the coating, the less current the system has to supply. The pipes themselves are listed under line pipes and fittings, and the isolation points of the line are pipeline valves.
How do UAE soil, seawater and heat affect cathodic protection?
UAE ground is salty and conductive, which means cathodic protection needs higher current than in fresh soil, and seawater makes anodes work hard. A 1996 paper on UAE pipelines described salty sabkha soils with high water tables and lines running at 40 to 60 degrees C, and traced external corrosion leaks to coating failure combined with poor performance of the applied CP system.
Sabkha and coastal ground
Low resistivity soil lets current flow freely, so a damaged coating draws far more current than the design allowed and anodes deplete early. Design from soil resistivity measurements taken along the route, not from a general assumption, and check the groundbed after the first season.
Offshore and marine
A study of 15 steel platforms in warm Gulf water off the UAE, at depths of about 125 to 185 feet, described regular surveys of sacrificial anode wear and measurements of anode and platform potentials, used to plan replacement anodes for older platforms. The lesson is that anode life is not set once at design: survey, estimate remaining life and retrofit.
Heat, power and enclosures
Transformer rectifier cabinets sit in direct sun and dust, so specify ambient rating, sunshades and sealed enclosures. Remote locations may need solar power for rectifiers, and monitoring over a data link reduces driving to remote test posts in summer.
Which standards and approvals apply to cathodic protection in the UAE?
UAE cathodic protection is designed to international standards called up by the operator, and carried out by people with recognised certification. As of 2026 there is no single federal product certificate for CP equipment, so operator engineering standards and approved vendor lists decide.
| Requirement | Applies to | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 15589-1, cathodic protection of on-land pipelines | Design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of CP for buried pipelines | ISO, called up by the owner |
| Owner engineering standards and approved vendors | Anodes, rectifiers, test posts, groundbed layout | Operator or EPC contractor |
| CP personnel certification (for example AMPP CP1 to CP4) | Testing, technician, technologist and specialist roles | AMPP or equivalent |
| Electrical safety and hazardous area rules | Rectifiers, cabling and junction boxes | Site and emirate rules |
AFNOR lists ISO 15589-1:2026, titled "Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy: Cathodic protection of pipeline transportation systems, Part 1: On-land pipelines", as published in July 2026 and replacing the 2015 edition. It covers buried pipelines, offshore pipeline landfalls protected from onshore, and immersed sections such as river or lake crossings, and applies to carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel and copper pipelines. Confirm with your client which edition the contract cites. AMPP describes four certification levels, from CP Tester (CP1) to CP Specialist (CP4), covering both galvanic and impressed current systems. Imported equipment follows the guidance in the ECAS and EQM guide.
How do you choose a cathodic protection supplier in the UAE?
Choose an engineering contractor with certified CP staff and a track record on your type of structure, and buy anodes, rectifiers and monitoring from makers who supply test data. The design is as important as the hardware, since a good anode in the wrong place protects nothing.
- Provide soil or seawater resistivity data, coating condition, structure size and design life.
- Ask for the design report, anode and rectifier datasheets, and the commissioning and survey plan.
- Check the personnel certificates of the designers and the commissioning engineer.
- Confirm the post-commissioning monitoring: potentials, rectifier outputs and survey frequency.
Makers of isolation hardware include RMA Middle East, which lists monolithic insulating joints for cathodic protection isolation, and Goodrich Gasket, which lists dielectric flange insulation among its gaskets. A fuel station project in Riyadh shows how CP appears in a package: it listed transformer based cathodic protection beside double skin tanks, PLC and SCADA controls. To compare quotes from several UAE suppliers, post your requirement with the structure, soil data and design life.
How is a cathodic protection system commissioned and monitored in the UAE?
Commissioning proves that the structure reaches the protection criteria set by the contract. The engineer energises the rectifiers in steps, measures structure to electrolyte potentials at the test posts and along the line, and adjusts output until the readings meet the criteria. Potentials are measured against a reference electrode, normally copper and copper sulphate for soil and fresh water, and silver and silver chloride or zinc for seawater.
Commissioning also checks for interference from neighbouring structures, foreign pipelines and stray current, which are common in crowded industrial zones such as Jebel Ali and Mussafah. After handover the owner needs a schedule: rectifier readings monthly, potential surveys yearly, and a deeper survey whenever readings drift. Ask the supplier to include the commissioning report, as built drawings and the monitoring schedule in the contract, because a system without readings cannot be shown to be working.
Beyond pipelines, UAE owners protect tank bottoms and exteriors, jetty and quay piles, desalination intake structures, offshore platforms and, in some cases, reinforcement inside concrete. Each has its own anode and power arrangement, so state the structure type in the enquiry and do not assume that a pipeline package will fit.
What drives the price and lead time of cathodic protection systems in the UAE?
Price follows the surface area to be protected, the coating condition, soil or seawater resistivity, design life, anode material and the power supply and monitoring chosen. Impressed current systems cost more to install but suit large structures, and sacrificial systems cost less to install and need no power.
Lead time depends on whether the items are standard. Magnesium and zinc anodes in common sizes and basic test posts are catalogue products, while custom cast anodes, high rating rectifiers and large insulating joints are made to order. Design, approval and survey work often take as long as supply, and a survey in sabkha ground may be needed before detailed design. Offshore retrofit work depends on vessel and diver availability, so plan around the weather and the operator's shutdowns.
