What are belts and chains, and which types do UAE plants use?
Belts and chains are the flexible drive elements that carry power from a motor or gearbox to a driven shaft, or carry product along a conveyor. In the UAE they are bought for HVAC and district cooling fans, pumps, compressors, cement and aggregates plants, steel and aluminium works, food and packaging lines, and port and logistics conveyors. On ListGCC they are grouped under bearings and power transmission products in the UAE, because a belt or chain is only as reliable as the bearings, shafts and sprockets around it.
The choice between belt and chain usually comes down to speed, load, environment and maintenance access. Belts run quietly at higher speeds without lubrication; chains handle high torque at low speed and tolerate heat that would harden rubber, but they need lubrication and tensioning.
| Type | Where it is used in the UAE | Key specification |
|---|---|---|
| V-belts and timing belts | Air handling units, cooling tower fans, pumps, compressors, packaging machines | Section (classical A, B, C or narrow SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC), datum length, matched sets, synchronous pitch and width for timing belts, antistatic if needed |
| Roller chains for power transmission | Gear motor drives, mixers, process machinery, agricultural and food equipment | Pitch and series (ISO 606 or ANSI), strands, breaking load, material and coating, pre-lubrication |
| Conveyor chains for bulk and unit handling | Bucket elevators, drag and apron conveyors in cement and aggregate plants, bottling and packing lines | Chain series (ISO 1977, DIN or proprietary), pitch, roller type, pin type, attachments, wear-resistant treatment |
| Sprockets and pulleys | Every belt and chain drive | Tooth count or groove profile, bore and keyway or taper bush, hardened teeth, material |
Drives fail as systems. Replace sprockets with the chain when teeth are hooked, check gearbox output shafts and gear units for alignment, and fit new bearings when they run hot. Shaft connections to motors are listed under couplings and clutches. Flat rubber conveyor belting is a separate product line, listed under conveyor belts, and complete conveyors under conveyor systems.
How do UAE heat, dust and humidity affect belts and chains?
In the UAE, belts and chains wear out early for three reasons: heat in enclosed plant rooms, airborne dust and sand that mixes with lubricant, and humid salt air at coastal sites. None of these changes the drive design calculation much, but each changes which product to buy and how to maintain it.
Heat on rubber belts
Rooftop plant rooms and belt guards in summer run far hotter than the outdoor shade temperature. Rubber hardens and cracks with heat and ozone, and compounds differ: Trelleborg notes that EPDM resists heat, ozone and UV, while NBR, chosen for oil resistance, is more sensitive to environmental ageing. Ask the supplier for the belt's rated temperature range and compound, and compare it with the measured temperature inside the guard, not the weather forecast.
Dust, sand and chain wear
Fine dust is the main enemy of chain. U.S. Tsubaki describes how abrasive fines in cement and aggregate plants contaminate lubricant and accelerate chain wear, and how lubrication there is often impractical. For dusty UAE sites, consider sealed or self-lubricating chain, wear-resistant pins and bushes, enclosed drives, and a dry-film or minimal lubrication regime rather than heavy oil that collects sand.
Coastal corrosion
ISO 9223, as summarised by the Hot Dip Galvanizers Association of Southern Africa, puts sites within about a kilometre of the sea in category C4 and jetties and exposed coastline in C5 or CX. Port conveyors, desalination intake screens and seafront plant should use nickel-plated, stainless or other corrosion-resistant chain, and stainless or coated sprockets where water spray reaches the drive.
Static and hazardous areas
Belt drives in gas plants, fuel handling and dusty grain or powder areas can build static charge. ISO 1813:2025 sets the maximum electrical resistance for antistatic V-belts, joined V-belts and V-ribbed belts intended for explosive atmospheres or fire risk. Where a drive sits in a classified area, ask for belts declared to ISO 1813.
Which standards and approvals apply to belts and chains in the UAE?
Belts and chains in the UAE are bought to ISO, DIN, BS and ANSI product standards that fix dimensions so parts from different makers interchange. We did not find belts, chains or sprockets on the MoIAT regulated products requirements list we checked in October 2026, so ECAS certification is not normally needed for them as loose items.
| Standard or requirement | What it covers | Who sets or checks it |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 606:2015 | Short-pitch precision roller and bush chains, attachments and sprockets for power transmission; listed by BSI as current and under review | ISO; chain marking and supplier certificates |
| ISO 1977 (GSO ISO 1977:2015) | Bush, plain and flanged roller conveyor chains with solid or hollow pins, sprockets of 6 to 40 teeth, K attachments and deep plates | ISO, adopted by GSO |
| ISO 4184:2025 | Datum lengths for classical V-belts (Y, Z, A, B, C, D, E) and narrow V-belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC); replaced the 1992 edition | ISO |
| ISO 1813:2025 | Maximum electrical resistance of antistatic V-belts and V-ribbed belts for explosive or fire-risk areas | ISO; declared by the belt maker |
| ICV certificate | Suppliers to entities in the National In-Country Value Programme | MoIAT |
Machines installed in hazardous areas may carry their own certification requirements as complete assemblies; our guide to ECAS and EQM conformity explains when MoIAT schemes apply.
Who supplies belts and chains in the UAE?
UAE buyers source belts and chains through authorised distributors of international drive brands, general power transmission stockists who also sell bearings and couplings, and conveyor specialists who supply engineered conveyor chain and sprockets to drawing. Standard V-belts, timing belts, roller chain and taper-bush pulleys are stocked widely in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi; engineered conveyor chain for bucket elevators and drag conveyors is usually made to order.
Among brands on ListGCC, Habasit power transmission and timing belts appear in the belt range, alongside its conveyor belting. Brand coverage in this family is still thin on our directory, so ask suppliers which brands they are authorised to sell and request the manufacturer's datasheet for any substitute.
- Authorised distributor: best for matched belt sets, engineered conveyor chain and warranty claims.
- Power transmission stockist: fastest for standard sections and pitches, often with sprocket boring and keyway cutting in house.
- Conveyor specialist: needed for attachments, special pitches and wear-resistant chain built to an elevator or conveyor drawing.
Our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers how to check a distributor, and chain lubricants are listed under lubricants and greases.
What affects the price and lead time of belts and chains in the UAE?
The main cost drivers are how standard the item is, the material, and how much machining it needs. A classical or narrow V-belt and a standard ISO 606 roller chain are commodity items held in UAE stock; engineered conveyor chain, stainless chain and large sprockets are often manufactured to order.
- Construction: raw edge cogged belts, aramid-reinforced timing belts and antistatic belts cost more than wrapped classical belts.
- Chain material: stainless, nickel-plated, sealed and self-lubricating chains carry a premium over plain carbon steel.
- Machining: sprocket boring, keyways and hardened teeth add workshop time.
- Matched sets: multi-belt drives need belts from one batch, which can limit what is on the shelf.
- Engineered conveyor chain: attachments and special pitches are built to drawing, often abroad.
For quotes from several UAE suppliers, post your requirement with the belt section and length or chain pitch and length, the sprocket or pulley details, and the operating conditions.
