Banking and financial services for industry in the UAE are the letters of credit, guarantees, equipment finance and insurance products that let manufacturers, contractors and importers buy on workable terms. Industrial buyers in the UAE mainly use four kinds of financial product: trade finance to pay for imports and exports, bank guarantees and bonds to secure contracts, finance for equipment and plant, and insurance for assets, cargo and receivables. The family belongs to the other industrial and B2B services category for the UAE. This page describes how purchasing and project teams use these products alongside their suppliers; it is not financial advice, and terms always come from the bank, insurer or fund concerned.
| Service | How UAE procurement teams use it | Key terms to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Trade finance: letters of credit, collections, supply chain finance | Paying overseas equipment makers against shipping documents, financing stock and receivables | Rules applied (UCP 600), documents required, latest shipment date, presentation period, confirmation |
| Bonds and bank guarantees | Bid bonds, performance bonds, advance payment and warranty guarantees on supply and construction contracts | Amount, expiry, on-demand or conditional wording, rules applied (URDG 758), issuing or confirming bank |
| Equipment and machinery financing | Buying production lines, cranes, vehicles and plant over time instead of from cash | Tenor, security over the asset, conventional or Sharia-compliant structure, insurance and maintenance obligations |
| Industrial insurance | Property and machinery cover, contractors' all risks, marine cargo, trade credit insurance on buyers | Sums insured, exclusions, deductibles, insurer licensing with the Central Bank of the UAE |
These services sit next to legal and logistics work. Contract and licensing questions go to legal and regulatory services, including import and export licensing, and the shipping documents an LC calls for come from your freight forwarder and shipping line. Defence and aviation programmes, covered under aerospace and defence supply, are typical users of performance bonds.
A letter of credit protects both sides of an import: the supplier gets a bank's promise to pay, and the UAE buyer pays only against documents that match the credit. A guarantee works the other way round, giving the buyer a bank's promise to pay if the supplier fails to perform. Both are only as good as their wording, so procurement should draft them with the bank before the purchase order is signed.
Most documentary credits are issued subject to the ICC Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits, UCP 600, which has 39 articles. The eUCP supplement, version 2.0 with 14 articles, covers electronic presentation. Under these rules banks deal in documents, not goods: if the invoice, packing list, bill of lading or certificate does not match the credit, the bank can refuse to pay. Practical points for a UAE import:
The ICC Incoterms 2020 rules, in force since 1 January 2020, are eleven three-letter terms that split tasks, costs and risk between seller and buyer. Name the rule and the place, for example CIF Jebel Ali or FCA the seller's factory, in both the purchase order and the credit, so insurance and freight documents line up with the risk transfer.
Performance, advance payment and warranty guarantees are often issued under the ICC Uniform Rules for Demand Guarantees, URDG 758, in effect since July 2010. Its 35 articles cover demands, expiry, amendments and transfers, and the ICC states the rules are Shari'a-compliant. Check the expiry date against the warranty period, whether a demand needs a supporting statement, and whether a UAE bank must issue or counter-guarantee the instrument.
Commercial terms follow ICC rules chosen in the contract, while the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) supervises banks and, since the merger under Decree-Law No. 25 of 2020, the insurance sector. Two federal bodies support industry directly: Etihad Credit Insurance for export credit risk and Emirates Development Bank for lending. The table reflects sources checked in October 2026.
| Rule or programme | Applies to | Body |
|---|---|---|
| UCP 600 and eUCP 2.0 | Documentary letters of credit, paper or electronic presentation | International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) |
| URDG 758 | Demand guarantees and counter-guarantees | ICC |
| Incoterms 2020 | Delivery, cost and risk split in the sale contract | ICC |

| Trade credit and export credit insurance, including LC confirmation insurance and pre-shipment risk cover | UAE exporters and the banks that finance them | Etihad Credit Insurance (ECI) |
| Long-term capex finance, trade and supply chain finance, credit guarantee scheme | Startups, SMEs and larger firms in manufacturing, healthcare, food security, renewables and advanced technology | Emirates Development Bank (EDB) |

ECI, set up in 2018, is the UAE's federal export credit company. Its site lists trade credit insurance products such as whole turnover, single risk, non-payment, pre-shipment risk and political risk cover, plus insurance that supports invoice discounting, factoring, supply chain finance, buyer credit, project finance and LC confirmation. For a UAE manufacturer selling to new markets, ECI cover can make a bank more willing to finance the receivable.
EDB lends to businesses in five priority sectors: manufacturing, healthcare, food security, renewables and advanced technology. Its listed solutions include long-term capex finance, greenfield and brownfield project finance, trade finance, supply chain finance and an indirect credit guarantee scheme. During Make it in the Emirates 2026 it launched an AED 1 billion National Industrial Resilience Program with MoIAT aimed at supply chains in priority sectors. MoIAT has also said that ICV certified suppliers can access EDB development funds.
Choose on fit with the transaction rather than on headline price: the bank or insurer has to accept the counterparty, the country and the instrument you need, on a timetable that matches the purchase. Commercial banks, finance companies, insurers and brokers, and federal bodies such as ECI and EDB all serve UAE industry.
Before committing to a new supplier on open account, run the company checks in our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. If you want proposals from several providers, post your requirement with the amount, tenor and instrument type.
Cost follows risk and workload: the stronger the parties and the cleaner the documents, the cheaper and faster the instrument. No fixed price applies, so ask each provider for a written quote.
