Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) in the UAE are machine-run stores in which cranes, shuttles, lifts or robots put loads into racking and bring them to a picking station without a driver. This page explains the types UAE buyers specify, when automation pays, the EN 528 safety standard, fire and machinery checks as of 2026, and what drives cost and delivery.
Sharjah is a port emirate on two coasts, so the logistics and material handling sector here is built around moving cargo between sea, air and road. Khorfakkan on the Gulf of Oman is the container terminal, Khalid Port and Hamriyah Port take general and industrial cargo on the west coast, and Sharjah International Airport sits beside SAIF Zone. Buyers look for forklifts, pallet racking, freight forwarding, customs clearance and heavy haulage.
SAIF Zone offers purpose-built warehouses and plots of 2,500 square metres and above, so it draws traders and stockists who want an airport address. Hamriyah Free Zone suits heavy cargo, steel and project loads that arrive by its port. Al Sajaa and Al Dhaid have logistics complexes that the ports authority links to distribution and re-export. In Sharjah Industrial Area, the sub-areas near the Dubai border hold truck operators, tyre and spare parts shops and small warehouses, and Area 9 is mainly used for truck parking.
Confirm the floor slab, clear height and sprinkler layout of the unit before you size racking, and ask the supplier for rated load plates and a layout drawing from their engineer. Warehouses storing hazardous goods need approval from Sharjah Civil Defence, so confirm the rule for your goods first. For forklifts, pick electric for indoor aisles and diesel for open yards, and make sure the dealer has technicians who can reach Sharjah quickly. A truck stuck at a port gate costs more than a brand price gap.
Containers can arrive at Khorfakkan and travel by road across the emirate, or arrive at Hamriyah or Khalid Port for general cargo. Because Dubai is close, many Sharjah importers also use Jebel Ali and truck across the border, so ask your forwarder to quote both routes. For oversize loads, ask early about permits and escorts. If a warehouse also needs lifting gear, our overhead crane buying guide helps, and you can send one spec to several dealers through post a requirement.
Sharjah's industry sits in three places. The first is the Sharjah Industrial Area inside the city, a run of numbered districts mostly along the Dubai border. Wikipedia lists 18 of them plus Al Sajaa, and describes workshops, warehouses, scrap yards, auto parts dealers, building materials firms, engineering contractors and the head office of a paint maker.
The second is Al Sajaa, further out near the airport and Al Hamriyah Port. A 2018 Gulf News report described the Al Sajaa Industrial Oasis, about 14 million square feet backed by Sharjah Asset Management Holding, as land for firms leaving the inner-city areas. It is not a free zone. Sajaa is also where the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) runs a gas and condensate processing complex with a hub for pipelines to the Northern Emirates.
The third is the free zones. Hamriyah Free Zone was set up in 1995, covers about 24 square kilometres according to Wikipedia, has its own deep-water port, and holds an LPG storage terminal with a marine berth. SAIF Zone, beside Sharjah International Airport, lists offices, purpose-built warehouses, plots from 2,500 square metres for custom factories or warehouses, and a jewellery manufacturing park. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, a free zone, sits in University City.
Sharjah has ports on two coasts. Gulftainer lists the Sharjah Container Terminal, the Khorfakkan Commercial Terminal on the east coast, the Sharjah Dry Port and the Sajaa Dry Port among the facilities it manages. Hamriyah's port is described as 14 metres deep. By road, the E311 and E611 connect to Dubai, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, and the E88 Al Dhaid Road runs across to Fujairah. Many buyers also clear cargo at Jebel Ali in Dubai, so ask your forwarder which gate suits your load.
The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) licenses businesses and has an industrial-area branch; its page says factories also need approval from Sharjah Municipality and the environmental authorities. Sharjah Municipality handles building permits, product approvals and food control. Sharjah Civil Defence approves plans, issues hazardous materials permits and compliance certificates, and ran a large inspection campaign in the industrial zones in the first half of 2025. The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) supplies power, water and piped natural gas. Companies inside a free zone deal with that zone's own authority first.
Building materials, paints, engineering workshops, auto parts and general trading dominate the inner industrial districts. Food processing has a foothold in Hamriyah, where a halal processed meat factory was reported in 2017. Gas, condensate and LPG handling drive oilfield and process-equipment demand at Sajaa and Hamriyah. Farming is small, centred on Al Dhaid. Sharjah is not a mining or heavy-steel city, so those buyers look to Abu Dhabi or the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
