Which carbon steel bars and rods are sold in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi buyers purchase carbon steel bar as merchant bar, wire rod and machining bar, plus reinforcing bar that has its own page. All four sit inside the carbon steel category for Saudi Arabia, and each is made on a different mill and bought by a different type of customer.

Saudi mills lean towards long products. How do you specify a carbon steel bar for machining or fabrication?

State the shape, size, length, grade, condition and surface. "Mild steel round bar 50 mm" could be a black hot-rolled bar, a peeled bar or a cold-finished bright bar; the tolerances and the price differ. Hot rolled is cheaper and carries scale. Cold-finished or turned bar holds diameter and surface and saves machining time.

EN 10025-2 covers delivery conditions for hot-rolled non-alloy structural steels in flat and long products, excluding hollow sections and tubes. For parts that will be hardened, carburised or loaded in torsion, name an engineering grade on the drawing and ask for a mill certificate showing chemistry. If hardness depth or fatigue is critical, check alloy steel against carbon bar before you order.

Which SASO rules apply to carbon steel bars in Saudi Arabia?

As of 2026, carbon steel bars are named in SASO's Building Materials technical regulation, Part 1, which covers metals and alloys used in construction and sets conformity assessment procedures for suppliers. SASO's notice lists low-alloy steel bars, carbon steel bars, steel wire mesh and steel sheets among the products, with mandatory application from 26 June 2020. Whether a given merchant or machining bar falls inside depends on its HS code and end use, so check the scope with SASO or an accredited body.

What goes wrong with bar orders in Saudi Arabia?

Disputes on bar usually start with an unstated grade, an unstated condition or a missing certificate. A quotation for "MS bar" leaves the supplier free to ship the cheapest grade that fits a loose description, and a workshop that finds the bar will not harden or the diameter drifts beyond the fit has no claim if the order never said otherwise. Put the grade, the condition (hot rolled, peeled or cold finished) and the tolerance in the purchase order, and request the mill test certificate with the delivery.

Climate adds its own problems. In the Eastern Province and Jeddah, bright and peeled bars rust quickly in humid coastal air if left on open racks, while in Riyadh the risk is dust and daytime heat on stored material. Ask for oiled or wrapped bar and keep it under cover. Welded bar needs a procedure written for the actual grade supplied, since higher carbon content makes welds harder and more crack-prone. Imported bar carries extra checks: confirm the SABER position of the product, the mill of origin and the heat numbers before the shipment sails, not after it arrives at King Abdulaziz Port or Jeddah Islamic Port.

Specialised users, such as makers of trailers, pump shafts, scaffolding components or cable-tray supports, often have a standing size and grade list. They gain by agreeing a call-off with a stockist: fixed grades, cut lengths and certificates, released against a rolling forecast, instead of a fresh enquiry every month.
