Open die forging in Saudi Arabia is the hot pressing of steel ingots and billets between simple dies into shafts, discs, tube sheets and heavy blocks for machining. This page covers where Saudi plants use it, the material and test requirements to write on an order, the new local capacity near Jubail, and the factors that set price and delivery.
The June 2026 TradeArabia report lists a reinforcing steel producer among the plants in Yanbu Industrial City, next to refineries, a gas terminal and glass and titanium dioxide plants. That gives the metals and fabrication sector a local source of rebar for the construction that follows industrial growth, while plate, pipe and specialty alloys for the plants arrive by sea through King Fahd Industrial Port.
Process plants consume welded steel: pressure vessels, tanks, piping spools and structural steel, all made from carbon steel plates, stainless steel pipes and alloy steel pipes. Fittings and flanges are a constant need at turnarounds. Finishing work, including hot dip galvanizing, blasting and welding services, tends to be bought together with the fabrication package. In a salt air setting, coating quality decides how long the steel lasts.
Ask for the shop's welding procedure and welder qualification records, third party inspection acceptance, and a list of the pressure and tank jobs it has delivered in the Kingdom. Request mill test certificates and positive material identification for alloy items. For heavy shop fabricated pieces, confirm the delivery route from the workshop to the industrial area gate. Imported materials clear at the port, so check import documents and country of origin papers before ordering. Post a drawing set through post a requirement to compare shops on equal terms.
Tip for timing: turnarounds compress purchasing into a few weeks, and plate or pipe with the right certificates is not always on a Yanbu shelf. Hold framework agreements for common sizes and grades, and keep fittings and flanges for the main lines in stock before a shutdown is announced. Buyers who wait for the work scope often end up paying for air freight or a longer wait at the port.
Yanbu is three places in one. Yanbu Al-Bahr is the older seafront town where most residents live, Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a separate inland area about 47 km away, and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya in the south holds the industrial city. The industrial city is planned and run by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, which was established on 21 September 1975 and answers to the Council of Ministers. Its mission is to plan and manage energy-intensive and petrochemical cities, and gas collected from oil operations is meant to feed their plants. In April 2026 Arab News, citing the commission's annual report, put total investment in the Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities above SR1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, and described Yanbu as a refining and downstream processing centre. Wikipedia lists three refineries, a plastics facility and several petrochemical plants in the city.
The expansion known as Yanbu-2 was launched in July 2005 on about 66 square kilometres, with a plan for 34 basic and secondary industries and 224 light industries. Those are 2005 plan figures. On 9 April 2025 Aramco and Sinopec signed a framework agreement to advance engineering studies for a petrochemical expansion at the Yasref refinery, with a 1.8 million tonne a year steam cracker and a 1.5 million tonne aromatics complex. Aramco described it as a study-phase project.
King Fahd Industrial Port is described as the largest port for loading crude oil and petrochemicals on the Red Sea, with terminals for general cargo and containers, bulk cargo and crude oil. The East-West crude pipeline from the Eastern Province ends here. In May 2026 Mawani, a shipping line and SABIC announced the Red Sea Express container service linking the port with Ain Sokhna in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan, at up to 1,100 TEU. In December 2025 Mawani signed a SAR 29 million logistics agreement with a logistics company for a 120,500 square metre cargo and storage site at a Yanbu port. The airport has domestic flights to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Medina lies roughly 160 km east by road, so inland deliveries often route through it.
Inside the industrial city, the Royal Commission handles land, utilities and investor services. Port matters go through Mawani and the port operator, customs through ZATCA, and building permits through the municipality. Fire and life safety approvals come from the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and medical products need Saudi Food and Drug Authority authorisation. Confirm the current steps with each body before you commit to a delivery date.
Refining, petrochemicals and port operations buy valves, pumps, coatings, gases, instrumentation and safety gear. Contractors follow plant shutdowns, and about 332,000 residents (2022 census) support housing, clinics and food supply.
