UPS Systems Suppliers, UAE
UPS systems in the UAE are the uninterruptible power supplies that keep data centres, hospitals, control rooms, airports and offices running through mains failures until generators start or loads shut down safely. This page explains the UPS types UAE buyers order, how to read an IEC 62040-3 classification, how to size kVA, kW, redundancy and battery autonomy for UAE plant rooms, which MoIAT rules apply as of 2026, and what sets price and delivery.

What are UPS systems, and which types are sold in the UAE?
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a rectifier, battery and inverter in one cabinet, arranged so the load keeps receiving clean power when the mains sags or fails. It is the best-known product in the power electronics range for the UAE, and the type you choose decides how well the load is isolated from the grid.
Schneider Electric's White Paper 1 groups static UPS into four common types and gives typical power ranges. Double conversion is the most popular type above 10 kVA, which is why it dominates UAE data centre and hospital tenders.
| UPS type | Typical power range | Typical UAE use | IEC 62040-3 class in normal mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standby (offline) | About 0.2 to 2 kVA | Single PCs, point-of-sale terminals | VFD |
| Line interactive | About 0.5 to 5 kVA | Small server racks, network cabinets, branch offices | VI |
| Hybrid conversion on-line | About 1 to 3 kVA | Small IT loads needing better regulation | VI |
| Double conversion on-line | About 1 kVA up to around 1,500 kVA | Data centres, hospitals, airport systems, process control, banking | VFI |
| Modular double conversion | Frames filled with hot-swappable power modules | Colocation halls and growing IT loads where capacity is added in steps | VFI |
Ranges are approximate and vary by maker. A UPS is one part of a backup chain: autonomy comes from VRLA, nickel cadmium or lithium-ion battery systems, substation and instrument DC supplies use industrial inverters and rectifier chargers instead of a UPS, and the 24 V DC supply inside a PLC panel usually comes from DIN rail power supplies with buffer modules.
How do you read a UPS classification such as VFI-SS-11?
IEC 62040-3 describes UPS output performance with a three-part code: input dependency, output waveform, and dynamic performance. Writing the full code into a UAE specification makes bids comparable, because two units both called "online" can behave differently.
- First part (VFD, VI or VFI): whether the output follows mains voltage and frequency (VFD), regulates voltage only (VI), or is independent of both (VFI).
- Second part (SS, SY and so on): the output waveform in normal and battery mode. Schneider notes that nearly all UPS rated 2 kVA and above are classified SS (sinusoidal).
- Third part (two or three digits): dynamic output performance during mode changes and load steps; lower digits mean tighter performance.
The current edition, IEC 62040-3:2021 (edition 3.0), covers movable, stationary and fixed UPS with AC input and output up to 1,000 V and energy storage up to 1,500 V DC. Many double conversion units also offer a high-efficiency or eco mode in which the load runs on bypass while the mains is good; in that mode the unit no longer behaves as VFI, so state whether eco mode is allowed for critical loads.
How should a UPS be sized for a UAE site?
Size a UPS on real kW at the load, the redundancy the owner requires, and battery autonomy at the actual room temperature. Getting the room temperature wrong is the most common reason UAE batteries fail early.
- kVA and kW: modern IT loads draw near unity power factor, so check the kW rating, not just kVA, and leave margin for growth.
- Redundancy: N+1 adds one spare module or unit; 2N duplicates the whole path for Tier-style data centres. Modular frames make N+1 cheaper to achieve.
- Autonomy: in buildings with standby generators, a few minutes to ride through generator start is common; standalone sites need longer.
- Room temperature: Riello UPS notes that most UPS are designed to run between 0 and 40°C, but sealed lead-acid batteries are rated at 20 to 25°C and are generally expected to lose about half their service life for every 10°C rise above that.
- Battery design life: VRLA UPS batteries usually carry a 5 or 10 year design life; under EUROBAT guidance a battery reaches end of service life when its capacity falls below 80%, which in a warm UAE room comes well before the label date.
Dust from construction or sandstorms clogs UPS air filters and raises internal temperature even when the room is cool, so filter checks belong in the service contract. Battery rooms also need ventilation for gas released while charging; IEC 62485-2 sets safety requirements for stationary lead-acid and nickel batteries up to 1,500 V DC, including ventilation.
Which standards and approvals apply to UPS systems in the UAE?
UAE specifications call for UPS to the IEC 62040 series, and as low voltage electrical equipment a UPS falls under MoIAT conformity rules, including UAE RoHS. Checked as of 2026; confirm scope for the exact model with MoIAT.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or body |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 62040-3:2021 | UPS performance classification and test methods | IEC, called up in consultant specifications |
| IEC 62040-1 (safety) | UPS safety for operator-accessible and service areas | IEC |
| IEC 62485-2:2010 | Stationary battery installations, ventilation and protection | IEC, applied by designers and Civil Defence reviewers |
| Low Voltage Electrical Products regulation (Board Decision No. 26 of 2009) | Low voltage electrical products; MoIAT asks for IEC CB test reports and certificates | MoIAT |
| UAE RoHS, Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2017 | Electrical and electronic equipment, with a declaration of conformity and ISO 17025 test reports | MoIAT (ECAS or EQM) |
The UAE grid runs at 50 Hz, part of the 400 kV, 50 Hz GCC interconnection, so a UPS moved from Saudi 60 Hz stock must be reconfigured and its bypass checked. The guide to ECAS and EQM product conformity in the UAE explains certificates and registration.
Who supplies UPS systems in the UAE?
UPS systems in the UAE are sold through manufacturers' regional offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, their authorised partners and system integrators, and IT distributors for small rack units. Buy large UPS through the authorised channel so commissioning, spare modules and battery replacement are covered locally.
Ranges on the UAE market include Schneider Electric APC and Galaxy UPS, Vertiv Liebert UPS, Eaton three-phase UPS, ABB modular UPS, Socomec, Riello UPS, Delta Electronics, Huawei UPS5000 modular systems and Legrand UPS. Ask each bidder for local stock of power modules and fans, engineer response time, the battery brand and its design life at your room temperature, and witness of factory tests to IEC 62040-3.
Where a site has large motor loads, coordinate the UPS with any power factor correction capacitor banks on the same bus. For vetting distributors, see the guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
What affects the price and lead time of UPS systems in the UAE?
Rating, redundancy, battery autonomy and chemistry set most of the price of a UAE UPS, and stock position sets delivery. Small single-phase units are usually off the shelf, while large three-phase frames are often built to order.
- Batteries: doubling autonomy roughly doubles the battery bank; lithium-ion costs more up front but saves floor space and weight.
- Topology: transformer-based units cost more and weigh more than transformerless designs; modular frames cost more per kW at first but ease growth.
- Service scope: multi-year maintenance with battery replacement is often priced into data centre bids.
- Documentation: consultant data sheets, factory witness testing and long O and M manuals add engineering time.
Give every bidder the same load list, redundancy, autonomy and room temperature, then post your UPS requirement to collect comparable UAE offers.
