Thermal Insulation brands in UAE
What is thermal insulation and which types are sold in the UAE?
Thermal insulation is any material that slows heat flow through a roof, wall, floor, duct or pipe. In the UAE almost all of it is bought to keep heat out and cooling in, so that chillers and split units run less. On ListGCC the category sits under waterproofing and insulation products in the UAE, next to the membranes and sealants that usually go into the same roof or wall build-up.
Five material groups cover nearly every UAE enquiry. They differ in fire behaviour, moisture tolerance, compressive strength and how they are installed, so the right choice depends on where the product goes rather than on thermal value alone.
| Type | Typical UAE use | Key specification points |
|---|---|---|
| Glass wool rolls, slabs and duct wrap | HVAC duct wrap and duct board, metal building roofs, drywall partitions, ceiling voids | Declared thermal conductivity, density, facing (foil or FSK), reaction to fire class, acoustic absorption |
| Rock wool (stone wool) slabs and pipe sections | Ventilated facades and curtain wall spandrels, fire-stopping, hot process pipework, plant rooms | Non-combustible classification, density, maximum service temperature, water repellency, compressive strength for roofs |
| PIR and PUR boards and pipe sections | Chilled water pipe supports and sections, cold stores, flat roof boards, sandwich panel cores | Thermal conductivity (initial and aged), closed-cell content, fire classification of the tested product, facing type |
| Spray-applied polyurethane foam | Flat concrete roofs on villas and warehouses, tank exteriors, irregular surfaces | Applied density, thickness control, UV protective top coat, applicator approval and fire classification |
| XPS and EPS insulation boards | Inverted roofs under pavers, below-slab and basement insulation, cavity walls and insulated blockwork | Compressive strength, water absorption, board thickness and edge profile, fire classification |
Insulation is rarely bought on its own. On roofs it works with waterproofing membranes and roof coatings, and every joint in a vapour barrier or duct wrap relies on tapes and sealants and contact adhesives. Factory-insulated walls and roofs are covered under insulated metal panels, finished roof build-ups under roof insulation systems, and HVAC duct work under ductwork and duct insulation. If you want the material installed as well as supplied, look at insulation contractors in the UAE.
How do UAE heat, humidity and dust affect thermal insulation?
UAE conditions punish insulation in three ways: long periods of high roof temperatures, humid coastal air that condenses on anything cold, and dust and sun on any material left exposed. Most site problems come from water getting into the insulation rather than from the wrong thermal value on the data sheet.
Condensation on chilled water and ducts
Chilled water lines and supply ducts run well below the dew point of humid air in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi for much of the summer. If moist air reaches the cold surface it condenses, the insulation gets wet, its thermal value collapses and the pipe corrodes under it. For cold service, specify a closed-cell material or a fibrous product with a continuous vapour barrier, sealed joints and sealed hangers. Ask the supplier which tapes, mastics and pipe supports they test with their system, and insist on the same set on site.
Roof heat and compression
A flat roof in the UAE carries foot traffic, AC units, tiles and sometimes solar frames. Boards under pavers or screed need a compressive strength suited to that load, and inverted roofs need a board with low water absorption because it sits below the drainage layer. Spray foam on villa roofs must be covered with a UV-resistant coating or a protection layer; bare foam degrades in direct sun.
Dust, sand and mechanical damage
External pipework in plants and on rooftops needs metal or polymer jacketing over the insulation, with overlaps that shed water and keep sand out. Store mineral wool rolls and slabs off the ground and under cover; wet or crushed stock is common on dusty open sites and should be rejected at delivery.
Fire behaviour
Fire is now the first filter in the UAE. Mineral wool is the default where Civil Defence expects non-combustible insulation, such as facades. Foams can still be used in roofs, cold stores and pipework, but only in the form and thickness that was tested, and often behind a protective layer the test assumed.
Which standards and approvals apply to thermal insulation in the UAE?
In the UAE, insulation is controlled through Civil Defence fire rules, applied by each emirate's civil defence authority, and through the emirate's green building system, which sets the envelope performance the insulation must deliver. European and American product standards define how the thermal and fire values on a data sheet are tested. The table reflects what we found, checked in October 2026; confirm current editions and circulars with the authority before fixing a specification.
| Requirement | Applies to | Authority or body |
|---|---|---|
| UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice, with facade systems tested as complete assemblies before approval | Insulation in facades and cladding cavities, and other listed fire and life safety products | UAE Civil Defence, applied by each emirate's civil defence authority |
| Al Sa'fat Dubai Green Building System: mandatory requirements for the Silver Sa'fa on all new buildings | Envelope performance of new buildings in Dubai, which sets insulation thickness in practice | Dubai Municipality |
| Estidama Pearl Rating System: minimum 1 Pearl for new developments, 2 Pearls for government projects | New buildings in Abu Dhabi emirate | Abu Dhabi planning authority (originally the Urban Planning Council) |
| BS EN 13162:2012+A1:2015 | Factory-made mineral wool for buildings: rolls, batts, boards and slabs | BSI / CEN, called up in project specifications |
| BS EN 14303:2015 | Factory-made mineral wool for building equipment and industrial installations, including pipe sections and wired mats | BSI / CEN, called up in project specifications |
| BS EN 13501-1:2018 | Reaction to fire classification (A1 to F) of construction products, with a separate route for linear pipe insulation | BSI / CEN, cited by fire engineers and in supplier test reports |
Fire rules for facade insulation
After the UAE fire code was updated, regional suppliers and test laboratories described a clear shift. In a 2018 Gulf News report, a Knauf Insulation manager said UAE authorities are now very specific that facade insulation must be non-combustible, and a UAE test laboratory said every potentially combustible material needs third-party certification and listing. A Kimmco guest article from the same year said facade systems must pass fire tests before Dubai Civil Defence approval. For buyers this means the insulation on a facade is approved as part of a tested system; ask for the test report and listing that covers the exact product, thickness and facing you are buying. Our guide to UAE Civil Defence product approval explains how to read a certificate and check its scope and expiry.
Green building codes
Dubai Municipality states that Al Sa'fat includes a set of mandatory requirements that all new buildings must meet to obtain the Silver Sa'fa, with Golden and Platinum levels optional. In Abu Dhabi, the Pearl Rating System under Estidama requires at least 1 Pearl for new developments and 2 Pearls for government projects. Neither system names a product: they set envelope targets, and the consultant's energy model turns those into an insulation thickness and conductivity. Ask the consultant for the assumed values and make every supplier quote against them.
Product conformity
Some building products fall under federal conformity schemes run by MoIAT. Before you rely on a supplier's statement that no certificate is needed, check the product against the current list; our guide to ECAS and EQM product conformity explains how the schemes differ and how to verify a certificate.
Who supplies thermal insulation in the UAE?
Thermal insulation reaches UAE projects through three channels: manufacturers with plants in the Gulf, international brands sold through appointed distributors, and builders' merchants and stockists that hold common sizes. Spray foam is different: it is bought as an applied service from an approved applicator, not as a product off the shelf.
Brands carried in this category on ListGCC include ROCKWOOL stone wool slabs, pipe sections and loose fill; Knauf Insulation, which makes both rock and glass mineral wool; ISOVER, the Saint-Gobain glass wool brand, and KIMMCO-ISOVER, a Kuwaiti producer of glass and mineral wool duct board, duct wrap and pipe sections operating under a Saint-Gobain Isover partnership; Paroc stone wool for facades, HVAC and process equipment, now part of Owens Corning; URSA mineral wool and XPS; and Izocam from Turkey, which makes glass wool, stone wool and polystyrene boards.
Questions to put to a UAE supplier
- Is the product made in the Gulf or imported, and what thicknesses and densities are held in UAE stock?
- Which fire test report and Civil Defence listing cover this product, and do they match the application on your drawings?
- Which declared thermal conductivity applies, and at what mean temperature was it measured?
- For cold pipework, which vapour barrier, tape and support system does the manufacturer warrant?
- For spray foam, who applies it, and does the applicator hold the approvals the consultant asks for?
Insulation is light but bulky, so freight cost and container space matter more than weight. Imported material usually lands through Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port; Gulf-made mineral wool shortens the chain. Our guide to sourcing industrial suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia covers supplier checks and RFQ writing. When the bill of quantities is ready, post your insulation requirement and compare several quotes on the same documents.
What affects the price and lead time of thermal insulation in the UAE?
Insulation price in the UAE follows material type, density and thickness first, then facings, fire classification and the paperwork the consultant needs. Lead time is mostly set by whether the exact thickness and facing are in local stock or must be produced and shipped.
- Material and density: denser mineral wool for facades and roofs costs more per square metre than light rolls for ceilings; closed-cell foams cost more than fibrous products of equal thermal value.
- Thickness: thicker boards and pipe sections raise both material and freight cost, and non-standard thicknesses often need a production run.
- Facings and jacketing: foil, FSK and reinforced facings, and metal cladding on external pipework, add cost and time.
- Fire classification: non-combustible facade grades and tested foam systems are priced above general-purpose grades.
- Pipe sizes: sections for large-bore chilled water mains and odd outside diameters are often made to order.
- Approvals: test reports, listings and green building documentation must be ready before the consultant approves the submittal.
Ask each bidder to state product, density, thickness, facing and fire class line by line, so quotes compare like with like.
